Ronda Rousey vs. Sarah Kaufman this weekend. Rousey in a press conference had this to say about Cris Cyborg:
"As long as she makes 135 I don't care if she puts horse semen in her eyeballs."
Best. Quote. Ever.
-here's the full version:
Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey was a guest on this week's edition of "The MMA Report with John Pollock" on TSN Radio in Canada. Rousey responded to comments made earlier in the week by Cris 'Cyborg' Santos about a potential fight with Santos stating she couldn't make 135-pounds. Here is Rousey's response:
Quote : | "If she wants to fight me than she is going to have to find a way to come down to 135. We'll see how she does in a fair fight for once in her life. She has a history of coming in over weight to fights and I wouldn't doubt that if we agreed to a catchweight of 140, she’d show up at 145 anyway and be like 'ah whatever, fight or not', she’s done this many times before. I don't owe her anything, she's completely defamed and anything she’s ever done is nothing because she is a big old cheater and has been doping her whole life and I think part of the reason why people like Dana think there is a lack of depth in all these divisions is because this girl is doping and making everyone look like they aren't in her league and I think the reason why people look at women's MMA like that was because of people like her. She is nothing but a detriment and the only positive she could play is an Ivan Drago bad guy that gets beat to hell by a Rocky. So no, she can fight me down at 135 because I have a whole line of people that want to fight me already and I don’t owe her anything, I don't need to come up and it’s just like why would I want to come up to her weight? She’s the one, stop doping, lose the weight or she can either do the drugs and fight me at 135 and have the drugs be just as much a detriment as a help to her during the weight cut or she can cut out the doping and make the weight easily. As long as she makes 135 I don't care if she's injecting horse semen into her eye balls but that’s the only way I think it would be a fair fight and she’s never had a fair fight in her life and I see how the prospect of that would scare the hell out of her and why she would insist at fighting heavier." |

i think its popularity is regressing, thats almost certain
The sport isnt dying though, overall the talent is getting better, more well-rounded, and the matchups and preparation of the fighters has lead to hypercompetitive fights and it is getting tougher and tougher to pick who will win, even if it means the fights are a little lackluster.
Whats hurting the ufc, and now strikeforce since they had to cancel the next card because Melendez got injured, is that they promote a handful of guys heavily and do little to nothing to promote anyone else. So obviously they cant get buys based on these fighters so when big fights fall through it becomes impossible to sell it to the public. At least with Bellator every fighter gets a little 5 minute introduction before their fights. With so many fighters on the UFC roster no one fights more than 2-3 times a year and it is tough to develop continuity with the fans.
Add to that arbitrary title shots and contenderships and it becomes even more difficult to bother keeping up with a fighter's career that you happen to like. In my opinion the lack of promotion is what is hurting the UFC. Strikeforce had to scrap the melendez card because Showtime flat out refused to air it because the remainder of the card was not strong enough. I cant remember if that was the same card Cormier and Mir were supposed to fight on but that fight got scrapped to due to Mir's injury 9/24/2012 3:52:09 PM |
face All American 8503 Posts user info edit post |
They definitely grew their roster of fighters so they could cash in on more cards but many of the cards are so watered down now that an injury or two REALLY dilutes the product.
Top that off with everyone knowing how to defend submissions to the point where rear naked choke is practically the only thing you ever see AND fighters dancing around rather than engaging in slugfest striking has really turned it from a spectacle show to something less interesting like Olympic boxing.
Oh and don't forget the brutal judges and insane scoring rules that favor total strikes over damage. 9/24/2012 4:03:06 PM |

face All American 8503 Posts user info edit post |
Everyone said the only way Bonnar could win is if he bullied Silva up against the cage.
So 2-3 times Silva literally walked over to the cage and stood with his back to it and put his hands down by his side and dared Bonnar to come hit him.
He dodged a few punches while standing with his back pressed up against the cage then landed a few shots and then kneed him to the solar plexus while he was standing and knocked him out basically.
It was just unreal.
All this whining about Sonnen vs Jones is annoying. Who cares, Jon Jones fights are boring anyway... 10/19/2012 4:47:38 PM |

Flyweight title fight on Fox. Should be massively, massively entertaining. Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson. 1/26/2013 9:28:13 PM |
BigHitSunday Dick Danger 51059 Posts user info edit post |
i wrestled derek brunson three times, i beat him the first time; the second time he came back from a near fall and pinned me and the championship he murdered me. he only wrestled one year in HS and he got real good real fast
that wasnt a bad fight, he took the fight on 8 days notice and i actually didnt think he did bad at all.
hed been murdering dudes before that fight aside from jacare souza; he just literally got the call from the UFC while working at his fulltime job in wilmington so naturally hed be a little out of shape and against a guy like Leben you cant be messin around trying to make the fight exciting. Even though he was piecing Leben up good
As for last night, my performances of the night were Demetrius johnson (hes the fuckin man, hes a mini-Rashad), TJ Grant (hellbows, matt wiman has been kickin ass lately), and hatsu hioki (should have won the fight, clay guida is a worthless bum)
Dodson will be back to another title shot quickly hes good just right now Demetrius is the better fighter but Dodson has them bricks in his hands. Glover didnt impress me much; Rampage, other than his conditioning and his laziness in takedowns and TDD, actually looked good and was actually taking over the fight. Page had some real good sweeps, was piecing glover up with technical boxing and defense.
Glover was throwing bombs behind the head (which IMO that shit should be illegal, its getting to the point where fighters are doin this on purpose with the intent of landing the forearm to the the back of the head) his takedowns suck, its just that rampage was completely compliant in going down. That being said, i think it ws fight of the night, just not a terribly impressive fight individual performance wise.

UFC did some winter cleaning out, headlined by Jon Fitch.
Quote : | "Dana White confirmed today with Ariel Helwani at http://www.mmafighting.com/2013/2/20/4009518/jon-fitch-among-16-fighters-released-from-ufc-on-tuesday the release of 16 fighters, including Jacob Volkmann, who released the information himself yesterday.
There were a number of notable names on the list, none bigger than Jon Fitch, coming off his loss to Demian Maia. Others were Wagner Prado, Mike Russow, Vladimir Matyushenko, Che Mills, Jay Hieron, Terry Etim, Paul Sass, Jorge Santiago, Mike Stumpf, Simeon Thoresen, C.J. Keith, Motonobu Tezuka, Ulysses Gomez and Josh Grispi." |

Matyushenko is done, so long, he had a good career, a UFC championship match back when Tito Ortiz was champ
it is a big deal on Fitch though, we're going to miss out on the potential Match of the Decade getting made in Jon Fitch vs. Jake Shields!
one bit of humor in UFC releasing Fitch is he's ranked in their top 10 welterweights kidding aside, he probably makes too much money to be a midcarder as he would be going forward, and they have to cut a lot of people as they don't have enough cards for all the fighters they have under contract

If you watch any MMA you see that knock out all the time. It doesn't look horrific but getting caught like that on the chin not expecting it even if not the most clean shot can put the lights right out. then the shot that follows ends it.
I think a rematch would be great if Silva came out motivated and striking. But this also frees him up for some interesting fights. But I hope for a rematch. 7/7/2013 4:56:53 PM |

Yeah, i have seen similar knockouts, but that was pretty soft even by normal "button" connections. It was also bizarre the way silva faked being hurt from the jab right before.

he didn't throw the fucking fight Jesus
hes 38. long illustrious career. Beat whos who in the MW division in dominant destructive fashion. Hes been out there having fun the whole time other than Yushin and Vitor whom he had history with. He clowned Weidman round 1 and made it clear who the better fighter was. He has nothing to prove by going out there fighting safe or by just steamrolling Weidman. It was a miscalculation. Most guys stop throwing combinations at three punches or go for a takedown. Shouts to Weidman for throwing that extra one he needed.
Silva probably gets hit with that punch many many times in sparring doing the same stuff especially with partners that know him
throwing the fight...that's dumb. He lost that fair and square, he knows the reason its a game of averages eventually itll happen.
Hes still #1 all time.
All I know is youre gonna see a mass immigration of niggas back to the MW division. Bet that. 7/7/2013 9:15:22 PM |
