What you're missing is that your reasonable assertion (misbehaving kids shouldn't go to nice restaurants) isn't really what everyone in the thread is saying. See the post above mine for reference.

it all comes down to respect for other patrons
if you have a baby (or child) who is quiet and well-behaved, they shouldn't be banned outright...rather, folks should be respectful enough of others to refrain from taking their terror out in public to annoy others
of course, it's easier just to ban them all 11/9/2011 1:06:35 PM |

My point is that you don't have a right to not be bugged in public or ostensibly public places. I'm bothered by most adults but you don't see me calling for them to stay at home just because I want to go out. 11/9/2011 1:19:24 PM |

I have seen grown people kicked out of restaurants for being assholes. I don't really think this is much different.

this thread is about banning kids...I have followed it for a while and if we tallied up the posts, I'm fairly certain the majority of people agree that a restaurant should be allowed to do this...not nearly as many people in this thread think they shouldn't be allowed to...I was under that impression at least
maybe kevina71 was talking to the people in the minority, but it didn't seem like it

Restaurants should be allowed and I think that they are, given that whatever policy they give doesn't violate state or federal civil rights acts. 11/9/2011 2:12:09 PM |

Restaurants can decline your patronage due to how you're dressed (jeans or shorts in a fine dining restaurant). If they can turn you away based off of physical appearance, then I don't understand how it would be a legal problem to turn you away based off of having children with you.
I doubt Second Empire would seat you if you came in carrying a 1 y/o baby, just sayin 11/9/2011 4:25:52 PM |

I would not blame them, but as a parent I might be more hesitant to patronize them. In my personal experience, we did not take our boys out to eat when they were really little unless it was a kid friendly location. Now that they are 4 and 8 and don't run around or act stupid, but will sometimes peep over the booth or introduce themselves to the people sitting around us so we are able to take them more places. But I still would not take them somewhere like Second Empire, Angus Barn, or probably even an Olive Garden. If I'm going out somewhere like that then I will spend the $20-$30 to get our sitter to come over and watch them as everybody will have more fun with her anyways.
I am also appalled by the people that bring very small children to late ass movies, scary movies, to a bar, etc. We have never done any of that shit, and will not do it. Sorry I have more respect for my experience at the movies, their welfare, and don't want to cause problems for everybody else. We have taken them to Cars and other movies and they have really enjoyed that, but if I want to see the next Transformers, the kids won't be with me.
As to the comment about employers, I work with a group of mainly parents who have to take off at times for kid related events. However, if they are sick, the state allows us to use sick time for that. But aside from this, I do use vacation. Additionally my kids are behaved enough that my coworkers do not mind them hanging with me for an hour or two. My wife has been interviewing for jobs and yesterday had to go in the middle of the day. Rather than dragging our 4 year old along, or having me leave work, she just brought him up here. I let him use my laptop at an empty desk next to mine and he behaved perfectly. Both my coworkers in the same office said as much and have told me they would much rather the boy(s) coming in then to deal with me being out for a short duration situation like that.
Bottom line control your kids and use common sense. Mine aren't perfect, but I avoided going out with them to places that were not infant/toddler appropriate, and now they are old enough to go to nicer places, and behave. If they get out of line, they know that daddy will spank them, and has had to on several occasions (not in a parking lot though). A lot of selfish motherfuckers in this thread. 11/10/2011 9:20:22 AM |

We have a woman here that does that as well sometimes and her son is fine. It also helps she has her own office she can shut him in.
I heard a story of a guy they had working here briefly that would bring his kid to work with him every day, 8 hours a day. They let it slide for a bit, but just as they were finally getting ready to say something to him about the situation, he just stopped coming to work 11/10/2011 9:41:44 AM |

^^WTF? My point was simply to illustrate examples of places I would not be interested in bringing my kids, at least until they are old enough to drive, regardless of how they behave.
^And wow, that is messed up. When the schools here do late starts, quite a few of the parents bring their kids in and then drop them off at school. I am not the only one that brings them up, but mine are probably the youngest that can sit at work for an hour or two and not be a distraction. 11/10/2011 10:01:51 AM |

Yeah I think I literally said "what the fuck" when my coworker was telling me the story. They never did figure out what the deal was. My guess is that the kid was still too young for school and he either couldn't or didn't want to pay for childcare. 11/10/2011 2:58:33 PM |
