^(going back to last page)^Why should Sadlack's be mentioned in this thread. Everyone I know that's eaten there has said they have fantastic sandwiches.

fuck. they aren't even comparable. one is dogshit. the other has good bread and good meat"

Agreed, Subway is near the bottom of the list for chain sub places (tied with blimpies in my book). But for this type of thread we shouldn't really bring chain food places into the discussion.

^why would you mention something you like in a thread about worst food?

Player's Retreat makes amazing shrimp and grits. I have no idea what their regular food is like but I'm a fan of their brunch.

mojoes isn't bad, and this is a "worst food" thread, but overrated in my opinion when regarding the burgers. people rave about the burgers but they seem the be the discs you can buy in a stack at costco. i think they have some good toppings, which i guess is the actual draw.

i guess someone should point me to the "raleigh menu item disappointment" thread

PR also has good burgers

It's a sign! I shall have a burger today.

People starting to say places that others like you're bound to have people defend it resulting a mention despite this being a "worst food" thread.

I'm a big fan of chains, but TGIFridays and Ruby Tuesday is

TGIFridays tastes like everything came out of a box (which coincidentally you can buy at your local supermarket in their box)

and Ruby Tuesday used to be decent but they decided to get real high-falutin all of a sudden. I went there not too long ago and their entrees are small on big fancy plates and it was $$$$ for what you get.

Applebees isn't far behind.

I just brought it up because back when I when I was at state it was shady as hell and everyone I talked to said it sucked. It appears to have been redone since then though so it might be under new management/better cooks/whatever now.

They have some of the best burgers in Raleigh, cooked to tempature. I will say that the service is horrible for the most part, but any food i have gotten there has been great and in no way overpriced. I dont know where you eat that you think PR is overpriced?

LK, you need a Ruckus burger. My lord.

^hahahahha I must live in the twilight zone. Incredible. Had a burger there 2 weeks ago (as did my friend), and we both decided they could've been thrown together at my house in no time, with no preparation. Just, a burger. Nothing stood out whatsoever. Best burger in Raleigh? you people don't get out.

I always have to defend Ruby Tuesday's. It's pretty good for a chain. I like the salad bar. You don't see many salad bars these days.

Remember when Wendy's had a salad bar? I know the one on Wilmington St. near the south edge of Raleigh had one.

I'm assuming you have never waited tables. (Disclaimer: I have not either but my live-in gf is a server so I've gotten to know how it works fairly well.) The "wages" of $2.xx per hour get almost entirely eaten up by taxes. You make a living off your tips. It's still no excuse for a lecture, and that would definitely be cause for a conversation with the manager and then leaving. The lecture was uncalled for and extremely tacky. But you have to understand where the money actually comes from in that job.

I actually think the burgers and sandwiches at PR are pretty good, and their lunch specials are pretty cheap. If you can live with it taking 18 years to get your food (the one thing that hasn't changed after the new mgmt/renovations) it's a good spot.

The next time I am at Mission Valley around lunch time, I'll have to take a right turn from the usual Cloos' visit and give the burgers at Ruckus a try.

I was about to get all up WillemJoel's grill for his heretical charges against Mitch and Player's Retreat, then make snide comments about his own business which I've had few interactions with but have never been pleased with (only times I was there it was jam-packed with obnoxious bros), but if he'll stick to his throwdown claim on buying a burger for the skeptical, then I might have to take him up on that for having the balls to do so.

The people pointing out that not enough people eat at Porter's are totally right, that place has been 100% good every time I've been there. Their appetizers can be stupidly addictive too, they used to have these "bacon cheddar tater tots" but they were more like fritters made with potatoes. There's a reason you see people who are clearly not students going out of their way to come to Porter's in the middle of the day when the student traffic is at it's highest. Great place for a casual but elegant meal.

I actually agree that MoJoe's has one of the best burgers in Raleigh. It's incredibly overlooked because it's just a tiny little place on Glenwood, and really, who wants to spend any amount of time on Glenwood? However, their burgers are great, and after 10PM they're HALF-PRICED. I almost never eat there unless it's past 10PM.

Though I still can't hate on PR. That place has history, and I can get a rare burger. Really though I just don't even eat there, you find me there ordering from the only extensive Scotch menu in the state. It's the only place that sparks my memories of hot, dark Scottish pubs with tons of Scotch at my fingertips. Even if it's anywhere from 7-12 dollars.

If the Wolves' Den is still the same set up as it was when I left 3-4 years ago, it belongs at the top of the list. It represents everything that's wrong with American Cuisine today. Chicken fingers, cheese sticks, potato skins absolutely saturated in grease. Pizzas with 90 percent of the toppings on one side. "Salads" with six pieces of lettuce and enough shredded cheese, bacon and ranch dressing to clog an artery. Corn dogs with a lard sheen so translucent that even coming in brief contact with one could lead to a breakout. Cooks and staff who looked to been escapees from a leper colony. Tables that looked like they were cleaned once a fortnight, with crusted food residue and bodily fluids stuck to every surface. Lighting that resembled a portmanteau of K-Mart's home furnishings section and a 70's porno set. Condiment trays that were refilled as a matter of convenience, not necessity. Bathrooms that gave Harellson a run for their money as the most disgusting excuse for a cesspool on campus. Everyone associated with State should push for its ousting. They can't get rid of that shithole soon enough.

^^^I agree with you, but the reason it doesn't really belong in this discussion is the Wolve's Den isn't "a restaurant that just happens to be on campus", it's a themed dining hall and nothing more. It sucks because all campus dining halls and their various schemed alternatives blow. If it were a genuine college pub it might be worth talking about, but it's not.

Forgot to mention Sadlack's. I've always disliked the place for its old guard patrons, but I actually went and had lunch there several times during the year. They have surprisingly good sandwiches, better than any nearby location certainly, but the food is overpriced... period. Almost 8 dollars for not even a foot-long sub? Back in 2004 it used to be like 5.25, supposedly.

Me thinks people are hanging onto old memories with all this talk of sadlacks patrons. a - they rebuilt the place. b - i go there for lunch every couple months and the lunch patrons are mostly young professionals and students. can't tell you who goes there on weekend nights, but the lunchtime crowd is fine. and the sandwichs are fantastic.

lol at comparing prices from 7+ years ago. if you want a $5 footlong, go eat the trash at subway. if you want a quality sub, be prepared to pay for it

sadlack's does make a good sandwich, but youre not missing anything if you dont go.

i wouldnt even step foot in ruckus for a free burger. and I'm half jewish!

mojoe's would have the best burger in raleigh if they cooked over flame. i worked there during school and loved it, but you can only go so far delicious-wise with a flat-top grill.

FUCK MITCH'S. i ordered a grilled cheese sammich there (off the secret menu cause im a baller) and the toast was burnt and the cheese wasnt melted. how the FUCK do you screw up a grilled cheese like that?

I didn't think their burgers were anything special (about even with the burgers Hi-5 used to serve) but I'm a burger snob in that I don't like it if it's not pink in the middle and I know some places can't serve them like that by law. I was completely unaware of the 1/2 priced deal. Might have to swing by again sometime soon

I just said there were misconceptions about the crowd there, but the still have plenty of barfly patrons even at lunch. But you're right, far more professionals and students than it used to be. As far as your cryptic assessment of what a sandwich must be to you, it's irrelevant to the discussion. The price comparison is not to suggest that their prices should never change, but that they're far too high for the quality and amount of food given. I'm sorry if the numbers scare you.

I'm probably exaggerating with MoJoe's a bit. They're not the best burger in Raleigh by any means, but they make a decent burger on the solid end. Their toppings are a definite plus, and the half-priced thing just makes it. And yeah, wish they'd serve it rare, but they won't.

has anyone ever gone to gravy and enjoyed it? i realize one experience might not be enough to be fair, but the diner and gravy are the only two restaurants i've been to where it was so awful the first time that i never felt an obligation to give it another chance.

at both places it was a combination of "if i'd made this food myself i'd just trash it and start over" and terrible service.

I've been to Gravy once and I liked it. I didn't think it was better than other downtown Italian places but it wasn't worse than them.
