there was some actual damage at the epicenter... my aunt (not the one from new jersey i previously talked about in this thread) drove there and saw a lot of chimney damage, and at least a few injuries from a high school where the gym roof had partially collapsed. 8/23/2011 10:42:01 PM |

yeah, some girl i went to high school with lost her house.
granted, it looked to have been built 130 years ago, and still had a carport, but nevertheless, it's gone and her insurance won't cover it.
sucks for her. 8/23/2011 10:44:20 PM |

NEWS FLASH. A surge of 100s of apparently unconnected fires broke out 2 days after the East Coast earthquake that condemned old uninsured buildings.8/24/2011 8:18:28 AM |

wow. couldn't be more wrong.
the highly fractured and inconsistent bedrock in the west allows earthquake energy to dissipate very quickly, thus earthquakes aren't typically felt from far away.
on the east coast, however, the older, more stable, less fractured, consistent bedrock allow for this energy to propagate vast distances, thus why smaller earthquakes (like yesterdays) can be felt up and down much of the coast (reports from toronto to south carolina)8/24/2011 8:34:38 AM |
