I have a friend who mentioned to me that a highway patrolman had followed her home. And then returned when he thought no one was home, but he was viewed from inside the house just sitting in front of the house. Since then, at least once a week, he sits on her route home from work about time for her to get off. One day, just on a whim, I rode by before she got off, and there he was just sitting there in a parking lot. I called and told her he was there and she waited a little while..almost 30 extra minutes...and she finally left. I sat there and watched, and as soon as she drove by, the HP put his car in gear and left. This morning, he was sitting there waiting for her as she went by, and again, since I live nearby, I just checked to see if he was waiting for her after work...and he was, this time in his personal vehicle. Clearly, this guy is stalking her...and I do not want her to end up a statistic....but if he isn't pulling her over, or abusing his power, is there anything that can be done. This has been going on for months

How would you rate RPD as far as being corrupt? What about Wake Forest PD and Rolesville PD? I went to high school in Wake Forest/Rolesville and those cops were colossal douchebags. I had several friends in HS get pulled over and ticketed in Rolesville for going 1 over the speed limit. I was curious what RPD officers thought of them.

Would you say that most cops are decent people just trying to do their job and make a living like everybody else, or would you say a sizable chunk of them are ego-tripping maniacs who are addicted to the power?

Less than 1%. I couldn't tell you people's motivations for becoming a cop; sometimes it just happens. There are some I question why they are here, but they are very few and very far between. Many times, if they work for a department with decent leadership, will find themselves booted if possible.

Thanks for the response. I always ask police this question when I get a chance because my wife got a ticket for violating GS 20-153(c) for attempting to make a nearly identical turn as the red line I drew. It just so happened that a dude was trying to use the "unprotected median" as an extension of the turn lane to get to the stoplight and side-swiped her as he went by (he got an illegal passing ticket but it was found to be 50/50 at fault). After talking to the our claims adjuster, ncdot, and 3 different lawyers I reluctantly accepted the fact that this was some sort of common knowledge that we missed out on. That's what my claims adjuster told us, it was common knowledge a "painted island" is exactly the same as a raised concrete island or grass median. On the contrary, every police I've ever talked to says basically what you have told me, that it's no different than turning across a solid double yellow line. We had accident forgiveness so it didn't matter that much for us at the time, but we were still out $500 deductible and $200 for the ticket to go away. It still pisses me off whenever I see that type of road marking.

How do you really know if somebody is texting? If I'm texting and you pulled me, couldn't I just clear the most recent text and just say that I was typing in the phone number? What if the phone is password locked?

Recently I was going 85 in a 65 when a police office pulled up behind me out of nowhere. I never even saw him, so I assume he must have just entered the highway and/or I was totally zoned out.

Anyway, once I noticed him I took my foot off the gas and gradually slowed down to around 70. He followed me for a couple miles all up on my ass, so I was sure I was going to get pulled. I even changed lanes to let him get around me, and he changed as well. Eventually, he just went around me. I assume he was following me while he was running my plates.

I have a totally clean driving record, and haven't even had so much as a parking ticket in the past 8 years. Is that why he let me go? If I had a speeding ticket on my record, would he have pulled me? This isn't the first time this has happened. I have been followed for miles in the past only to have the officer dart around me.

I was driving up I-95 in SC a year or two ago. It was after dark and there wasn't too much traffic. Suddenly, I notice a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed from behind. I'm pretty glad I had no need to switch lanes, because if I would have, I would probably have been obliterated. In the split second before the vehicle was out of view, I noticed it was a cop car, blue lights not running. As best as I can guesstimate, he was going around 140+. Is it legal for cops to drive that fast without having their lights on?

I would say absolutely most cops are decent people who just want to do their job, try and help people and remove legitimate bad guys from the street. Most cops just want to put in an honest days work and then go home safely to their kids and family. I think a lot of hostility towards cops by the teen and college age crowd is based on immaturity as well as just an anti-authority attitude. Also, its hard to say the cops are just hassling you for no reason if you are actually doing something wrong. Are some cops more hard ass than others about petty stuff, yes, but that doesnt make them corrupt or a bad person. Id say as a whole, the police have more respect for the constitution and individual rights than the average politician. And, any honest cop, despises any police officer who is corrupt, or lies, or goes against someones rights. It makes us all look bad, and it makes earning respect harder.
But if some college age kid really thinks he lives in a police state, where the cops are just going too far, I advise him to take an honest look at other countries in the world before he makes that judgement. I think most hatred of cops by young people is really just being a sore loser because they got caught doing something stupid. I did dumb shit in high school too, and I once got caught as well. It didnt make me hate the police, because I knew damn well what I was doing was stupid. It was nothing serious or blatantly criminal, but it was enough to have the cops show up.

Because we all do it. Enforcing the law doesn't always mean you have to get a ticket. Sometimes, a simple, hey you are going 15 over the speed limit in rush hour and you need to stop will suffice.

While I agree with much of this, the "look around the world" argument is not really an argument. It does not matter what the rest of the world is doing. The constitution is not relative. Rights are not relative. I don't hate cops, I'm not a "fuck the police" person; however, I do have an innate suspicion of the government/cops, and all too often constitutional rights are trampled upon by the police. The evidence is easy to find on youtube. Now, I don't think most cops are like this, but I think there are enough who don't care about rights/are on permanent power trips to justify suspicion of the police.

The public can't tell good cop from bad cop. I'm just waiting on the day that some asshole cop who's having a bad day forgets that concealing a handgun is legal with a CHP (or just doesn't give a fuck that day) and tasers, beats, and/or harasses some innocent person... oh wait, that happen a few years ago in Ohio. Or clotheslines some kid skateboarding, potentially seriously injuring him.... oh wait, that happen about 5 years ago, see my point?

I may be misinterpreting what you're saying here....
But pulling a concealed handgun on a cop sounds like an excellent way to get shot. I'm not saying one wouldn't be legally in the right in defending themself... and I'm sure there would be a nice write-up in the paper about it all. And I'm not saying it's right to get beaten, tased, etc... I'm just saying under threat of a firearm, I'm sure the police(men) would rather shoot you first, and sort the details out later.
