Just heard my favorite quote on the radio: "it's so bad here, the squirrels are in row boats"

Seriously though, it's crazy up here

Holy Crap, how long is this gonna take to pump out.

The news is covering the suburbs that are all fucked up, but I find the pictures from the city more interesting. Some of the most beast infrastructure in the country all fucked up by a Cat 1 storm.

the chances of them getting hit by a storm like this, prior to global warming, was one in at least 250 years. I don't think they've ever had a storm this big hit in its entire history.

I only see the frequency increasing as global warming increases.

I did some XKCD-style calculations and found the tunnel contains somewhere around 45 million gallons of water

if they used one pump capable of 1320gal/min it would take 24 days of non-stop pumping to empty the entire tunnel.... 10 pumps = 2.4 days, etc

and that's not the only tunnel with water in it either

The thing about those tunnells is they have pumps in them that run under normal circumstances, but they are all probably ruined by being completely flooded out, along with other electrical components, lights, safety equipment, security equipment, ventilation.

I, too, have wondered these things; albeit, in a more tactful way.

Aside from the crappy labeling, what storm damage was in Wake County? Did a diseased tree branch snap and fall onto someone's car?

Yes, but we are SOOOO much luckier than many of our neighbors. I'm throwing some of the pictures I took into a single file for posting purposes. We've had on-and-off power (mostly on), but the downed trees have been the big issue in our area (that, and high waters causing basement flooding). Don't expect transit to be running for a few weeks, but thankfully the internet came back a few hours ago! It's the little things, I guess

Finally heard from my family on LI! Amazingly they didn't get flooded considering how close they live to the water. But they have no power. My aunt is now camping out in a library a couple towns over so she can telecommute into work
