what OS are you running it on? I'd think the devs would like a bug report on that issue.

No I don't (not when I am trying to establish orbit). Anyway I actually got an orbit around the Mun with having to toggle between the screens.

Career mode has injected new life into this game. You don't start out with all of the parts and you have to "do science" to move up the tech tree. It's fun doing things like landing on the mun, etc without the parts we are used to

I love it so far. I finally made a moon landing with my rocket called the Mun5t. The lander has enough fuel to make it back to Kerbin as well:

Huge fan of career mode - I was making some good progress up the tech tree and decided I would (without planning, of course) shoot for a Duna intercept. Sure enough, I just managed to get myself slung out into a huge kerbol orbit and it quickly turned into a salvage mission to attempt to get Jeb home. By some sheer stroke of luck, I managed to set up an interplanetary return trajectory that would have me landing right back at Kerbin. Unfortunately, after the final burn, I was 9m/s short of re-entering the atmosphere and instead would have managed a 300km periapsis before I was slung out to my doom.

Fortunately, Jeb had enough EVA fuel to climb out and shove the capsule the necessary 9m/s and I landed safely

It would be awesome if you could build a spaceport on the Mun so you could launch from there. It would make interplanetary travel a lot easier.

i think there is a mod you can download to do it. otherwise just launch a fuel depot into low kerbin orbit and/or an interplanetary stage, dock, and go. (have you docked yet?)

First few missions were ~500 each. Fourth mission, goal was at least 2000 Science. Achieved.

This will be even more enriching when there is money to care about though. My designs continue to be completely asinine.

Bigger is better.

go to different "biomes" around Kerbin, Mun, Minmus, and do crew reports and EVA reports. Then beam the data back via the communitron. rinse, repeat as many times as your battery life will allow.

^^ What ^ means specifically is right click on your command module (while in flight) and select Create EVA Report. Then "Keep Data" and either transmit it or land and Recover.

I prefer Recovering. It's way less tedious and much more fun. Especially early on when you have no batteries or solar panels available to you. Recovering allows you to rack up points quickly.

Having to do a round trip to Duna and back is something I had never once accomplished prior to Career mode. New sense of achievement.

I've been playing with unmanned probes/satellites recently. My latest challenge is basically building CubeSats in order to maximize the performance of a single on-board ion engine. Thus far, I've been shooting for <0.75 ton satellites, including the ion engine/fuel, solar panels, batteries, and a goo tank - I carried one to Dres with a nuclear stage, which was rather easy:

TWR is obviously not great, but by keeping the mass to an absolute minimum, I can at least use the ion drives for orbital maneuvers. I built an even smaller class using the tiny OKTO core. This one can get into a ~150km orbit anywhere around Kerbin using some SRB launch stages and a tiny liquid stage for circularizing.

The eight 1x6 solar arrays let me run the ion drive at approximately full throttle so I'm not constantly waiting for the tiny on-board battery pack to recharge. I still need to get some more Science to finish up the tech tree, so these little guys make for an easy interplanetary probe that I can hurl off to just about anywhere and gather up plenty of points.

Picked up the demo of this tonight.

2 questions. How do you end the "scenerio" after you land? And any good beginner tutorials?

EDIT: Figured first question out, and second one found the KSP wiki.

So far 1 crash (still not sure how I did it, as when I retried it flew), second time crashed upon landing due to how I configured my first ship (left an engine attached), and third time had a nice landing.

Now to make orbit.

OK someones got to be able to recreate this better than me.

Think something along the lines of a Saturn V but with 8 engines at the bottom, and with a tall stack.
Stack collapsed, the bottom cluster somehow caught the pod. Went up a bit. Flipped. I popped the chute, pod fell off after a sec. Camera pans around to show the engine cluster headed right for the buildings, somehow misses the ground and flipps back upright, and heads for space on its own.

yeah! keep playing... go to the moon first. get into orbit, and the wait until the mun starts to rise over the horizon and then burn prograde... once you learn to land on the mun, the rest of the game is simple progression. when it's time to go to other planets there is a calculator you can use to find the phase angle (where the planets are in relation to kerbin so you can reach them efficiently.)

I finally made it back to kerbin from the moon since i started playing again. I could consistently land without the dv to make it back to kerbin, but then the other night I had enough unlocked to get me there and back.

The best I can do right now is get into orbit and get back down. If I get my orbit effed up, I can't recover, other than to return. Do y'all play in full screen mode?

What mods and extra stuff packs do y'all use? Just stock stuff?

I use Kethane sometimes... but it won't do you much good until you get to the moon (you can scan for and mine kethane from other worlds and convert it to fuel)

Mechjeb - some consider it cheating because it has an autopilot feature, but it's good to see data about your ship. I rarely use the autopilot anymore. (but it's good if you are using an ion engine and need to burn for several hours at a time)

there is also a mod that adds clouds and city lights to planets... it's purely aesthetic.

oh... and there is a "Planet Factory" mod that adds several new planets and even a companion star with some of its own planets... it takes a good chunk of memory so if you do use a lot of mods it might not be the best to use. Aaronburro, are you playing through the career mode or just doing sandbox for now? Honestly, it might be better to start out with career mode so you aren't so bogged down by the sheer number of parts at first.

I'm messing around with the sandbox right now. Might switch over to career soon. Managed to land on Minmus today, basically following Manley's tutorials. I had a hell of a time getting back; I started out with about 40 units of fuel with an LV-909, got off it with about 24 left (after hitting the stage once by accident >.< I know, I suck), basically having enough fuel for one last 8s burn in the vicinity of Minmus' orbit. A couple F9s later and burning the rest of my fuel trying to slow down, and I'm screaming into the atmosphere at ~3500m/s, which is probably enough to destroy the capsule, lol. Either way, made it down safely, and even got to go visit my debris field. Slappius Maximus has returned!

coming in hard is what parachutes are for.

I have successfully landed on 2 planets (and yes I got to Eve!) and both of the home moons. Ive not returned from anywhere. Yay for Fuel ratios. Current Mission is to send a fleet to Duna. Mix of landers, orbiters, and probes. Not sure if they will make it home, but they will definitely make it there, and hopefully land. After that I want to start setting up rovers to go out.

Mods:
MechJeb- Use it a ton on sandbox, try not to use it on career, but I have to get to a few weird places.
Remote Tech- this was fun until I got serious on career mode. Then it sucked as you have to have 50 satellites for a single mission to talk home.
Protractor-very useful for angles.
Kerbal Engineer Redux- again very good for calculating things. Trying to use this more in place of MechJeb and actually learn how to do something.

Kethane -Downloaded, havnt installed yet. also http://themittani.com/features/kerbal-space-program-kethane-mod-adds-resources

Ive a bunch of parts and ship files (not really mods, but not standard equipment) that I play with as well. Most of the parts are ok but the ships are always fun to play with something someone else has made.

I haven't had any trouble with MechJeb. Just grab the part from the controls thingy and slap it on your rocket. You should see the thingy on the right in VAB as soon as you slap it on there. Aaaaaaaaaand let's not let this thread devolve into a MechJeb bitchfest

No bitchfest here. Apparently it works great for most. I need to upgrade I guess. Either way I recommend the Anvil rocket pack if you want some powerful yet efficient engines. I finally made it to Minmus last night only to crash on landing as when I adjusted to kill velocity it also brought my descent path over a cliff LOL.

^I don't think that's what he meant... on other forums MechJeb is a very polarizing issue... some people think it is cheating and others embrace it.

I think it's all about your enjoyment of the game. I don't use mechjeb all the time, but when I have a super long ion burn to do (i've had some i've had to set to burn overnight) mechjeb is great to hold the ship in the right direction, etc.

I returned successfully from my first suborbital Mun trip.....with no fuel, not even electrochemical

I forgot to turn off SAS at some point and left the Mun with 0.9 units. I used about half of that to set up my approach to Kerbin. I used the last to set up my aerobraking and finally put myself in a spin that pointed me through prograde and retrograde so I could incrementally slow myself till I ran out of liquid fuel while I was aerobraking.

Ahh ok and yes it can certainly be seen as cheating by some. However if you are looking to see how well your rocket designs work it isn't necessarily so.

^^ I am not sure, that's what the log said when I finished, I'm still kind of new to everything. I pretty much got out there, and made a few orbits, and came back. The science log at the end after recovery said something similar to: recovery of a vessel that survived suborbital flight of the mun. Maybe my periapsis was too low?

Alright I succeeded on a Minmus mission. My next question is how do you transport rovers and payloads to space or other worlds? Also do you use docking ports to construct say modules to construct a space station?

This is interesting. So far i did the tutorials, got some science in Career mode and recreated the Sputnik 1 and Vostek 1 missions in Sandbox mode.

I'm feeling pretty comfortable with orbiting Kerbal and coming back home again. Next i'll try hooking up with the Mun orbit. I did it in one of the tutorials but i didn't really get it. Need to do it a few more times.

Then I SHALL LAND ON THE MUN!

I mostly do docking ports. Honestly, don't overthink your first rovers... make them small and stick them somewhere on your lander... on the side (balance it with something else) or underneath (where they have enough clearance to fall to the ground and drive out after landing)

i'd give them a probe core, some sort of structure (with wheels and a seat), a small battery, and a small solar panel and not much else.

Thank you I will attempt that with Rovers. I made it the Duna for the first time. I landed and engaged in some EVA, but unfortunately my Kerbal is stranded as there is not enough fuel for a return trip. I will have to design a better ship for an eventual rescue.

Today I attempted the Gemini mission which puts two capsules up in orbit and tries to dock them. I got them both in orbit, and could get them within 15km or so of each other, but i couldn't get them any closer. I think their orbits were too different and so the RCS boosters didn't have enough power to close the speed delta. I guess i should have took the time to reset orbits for both which were getting wonky, but i got frustrated and took the capsules home. Another day :/

the best way to attempt rendezvous is with the maneuver nodes. set up a node and just fiddle with it and see how far away you will be at closest approach. (the pink/purple things that show up) once you do have a close encounter, kill your relative velocity, and then your orbits will mostly match.

if you are close enough (a few km) then you can do to the next phase... thrust towards the target, then when you get close, kill your relative velocity. do then repeatedly until you are very close to your target.
