The shooter's name isn't Ryan Lanza it's Adam Lanza (Ryan Lanza is the older brother being held for questioning)

to the people who are posting "if 26 little children.. you might want to have a look at your priorites" meme, would you be happier if we we were posting on tww: "my prayers go out to the little children?" Would that make me a better person?

"dude, i presented an example of [bold]a country similar to the us[/bold] that has a lot of firearms with far less violence than the us. i didn't list any reasons WHY it was different in that regard. i simply listed it as an example. moron."

and I'm pointing out that not only what you said wasn't true, but that the two situations are not similar in any way, shape or form. How is the gun situation in Switzerland in any way similar to the 21st century US? They both have people and guns? You could make a better argument in that its similar to 17th century colonial US. Regardless you pointed out incorrect fact A: All males in Switzerland must own assault rifles and then presented Fact B: Switzerland has less violence than the US. It's pretty clear what you're trying to get at and it's fallacious. Feels like you saw someone post this on facebook and didn't even bother checking it before running over here to post it.

anyway, this is dumb. I'm done

Also, according to the source used in that graphic, in the year 2000

Number of drownings in bath-tub: 341
Number of people killed by a bolt of lightning: 50
Number of people executed: 80
Number of people shot to death by police officers: 270

Number of people killed from assault with firearm: 10,801

Which one is significant?

^^^^go back and read the thread. Vulcan91 made a remark about what it was like in a country economically similar to the US. I posted Switzerland. A country economically similar to the US. That is the only context in which that country was posted. Never said the gun situation was similar.

^^^i definitely misused "statistically significant."

and to your point, here's another scenario

person a - one is far more likely to die in a car accident than in nuclear war so we don't have to worry about it

person b - so we shouldn't work to make sure nuclear material and technology is secure?

it's fitting that in one of america's greatest past times (violence) the #1 weapon used is from america's greatest past time

Don't put up incomplete bullshit - at least be clear and tell the whole story. The FBI statistic is not for only baseball bats, it includes "other dangerous weapons," such as golf clubs, hammers, baseball bats, etc. That category is an aggregate.

The claim in that graphic is thrown around on multiple gun advocate boards, with no citation. If you want to see something that provides a better estimate of violence with actual citation, see the Bureau of Justice Statistics article here, which has firearms as the most likely weapon used in a violent crime involving weapons of any kind.

^^^good link

and for a certain someone:

Quote :
"3. Lots of guns don’t necessarily mean lots of shootings, as you can see in Israel and Switzerland.
As David Lamp writes at Cato, “In Israel and Switzerland, for example, a license to possess guns is available on demand to every law-abiding adult, and guns are easily obtainable in both nations. Both countries also allow widespread carrying of concealed firearms, and yet, admits Dr. Arthur Kellerman, one of the foremost medical advocates of gun control, Switzerland and Israel ‘have rates of homicide that are low despite rates of home firearm ownership that are at least as high as those in the United States.’” "

A Facebook friend just posted he's on his way to pick up his young children (kindergarten & 2nd grade i think) and is trying to figure out how to tell his kids about the tragedy in Conn.

Not talk to them about the bad things they heard today, but to let them know that today while they were at school a gunmen killed 20 of their peers and 6 adults who were supposed to keep them safe.

Why on earth do people expose their kids to this shit?

What do you do then?

Government legislates and comes and takes weapons from private owners by force? That will end well.

Does it try some reimbursement program like cash for clunkers? Oh yeah they have no cash.

People like "thegoodlife3" make me want to throw up with their fake sympathy. Any gun control legislation to that type of person doesn't make them feel better or safer; they don't give two shits about these kids or the President's tears.

They just see another potential tally mark for their fucking political party. Disgusting.

No different at all from those misinterpreting the 2nd amendment who are in fact just dumb hicks. Both sides to the same stupid coin. How about coming up with a real (non-selfish) solution since you're so enlightened?

You want that shit to stop then you ship pryderi's stupid ass off in short order.

Maybe after enough of these fuckwits disappear they will get a clue.
