So I've been playing acoustic (Taylor 410ce) exclusively for about 10 years and my dad just got a MIM Fender Strat and it's got me interested in getting back into electric.

Does anyone have an opinion on MIM Strats ($500) vs. American Strats ($1300) and how they compare to a similarly priced Gibson Les Paul Studio ($1100)? Are American Strats really worth the extra $800?

I'm also going to need an amp. I'm in a condo so I don't need to blow my neighbors out. I was thinking a tube amp but solid state may have improved a lot since I last played electric (high school). My friend recommended a Fender Blues Jr. ($600) but that may be more than I'm willing to spend. I'd like recommendations on amps - was also considering Marshall (Micro Stack?).

I play classic rock mostly. No metal. I also won't be moving my equipment or performing.

blues jr is def nice, but more than you need for an apt for sure. I really like the VOX ac4TV for lower price range and ability to switch to lower power outputs and crank up the vol and gain for a nice fuzzy tone, or up the power setting and lower the vol for a cleaner tone.

I can't comment on the MIM vs. American other than go to Sam Ash/Guitar Center and play them both.

Check out the Fender Vaporizer, it is an interesting 12W tube 10" combo for $299 that I may have purchased if it had existed when I was purchasing.

Blackstar, Vox, VHT and even Hughes and Kettner all make great low wattage heads/combos.

I have a highly modded Blues Jr. with a G12H in it and it is an insane amp, but waaaay too much for a townhouse, haha.

There's a nice tweed blues jr. on craigslist right now for $300. I definitely don't want to pay full price for one. I'll look into the Vox.

A blues jr is a gigging amp. you need to consider the volume you'll be playing at. I prefer the sound of mini amps over a blues jr at low volume. imo, you need to crank a little to some distortion and get a good round tone, but you wont go past a quarter turn on the blues jr in an appt. I rarely go past a half turn when my vox is in 4w mode and I have no neighbors.

I'd caution buying a blues jr on craigslist. The tubes could be wearing out depending on use, and those amps are often played hard in esp if they were in a band. tubes can cost a lot, I'm not sure what they go for in that amp tho.

I'm leaning towards the Vox you suggested. I've been watching some demo videos on it (where they're playing strats) and I agree with you. The sound is good and I don't need the power of a bigger amp.

If I can't find a used American Standard in Olympic White with a maple neck (I know, I'm picky) for a good price, I think I'm just going to go with the two tone Player's Strat or a MIM.

With acoustics, I justified buying an expensive instrument because I've played since I was 7 years old and the tone will only get better with age. Acoustics and rhythm guitar will always be my first love. My buying an electric is admittedly on a whim and I can't justify spending $1,000+ on a setup for it unless I develop my lead abilities or start gigging.

I love the vintage white on maple look.

I'm not a fan of the mim, personally. just a suggestion to look more into the japanese made. MIA highway 1 series is cheaper, and still ok.

I'd look into an vintage 80's japanese fender squire. or the fender JV series, some are ridiculous price like 2k, if they are the right year from a special plant in jp. but you can get a nice one like an E series for much less.

the guy in the second link has tons of jv stratocasters and often has some for sale.

also, a good thing about electrics is as long neck and frets are good you can easily swap out the electronics, and hardware to improve the sound. so even if you get a mim now you can get better sound if you're still playing it next year by simply upgrading the pots and pickups. The body construction is important, but obviously not as much with acoustics.

Anything tube that's more than 6 watts is going to be too loud for regular home use. I play gigs with an unmiked 15 watt Vox-style amp all the time and never turn it up past halfway.

I would advise against the rattletrap PCB amps if possible. They're fine for what they are (cheap tube amps), but for a little more money, say $300 if you're patient, you can get a silverface Fender Champ that will last forever and sound like heaven.

I'll echo the comments about the MIJ Strats, especially the E series. You can get a very fine example of an E series Strat for less than a new MIM Strat, and it's a better guitar that will also increase in value over time.

Next time you see a silverface Fender Champ for $300 let me know and I'll buy one, haha. I always seem them around $500.

I have been looking to sell my blues jr. to get something I can saturate the power tubes on and a 8" Champ is a great choice or perhaps I will just build my own.

yes squire is the "lesser" [note the quotes] fender, especially true now. fender created it to squeeze out the copycat market by making a copycat of their own. The Japanese being the super attention to detail and awesome craftsmen they are, fucking nailed it. they created fender re-issues under squire for export to europe etc (not us). Fender wanted to brand them differently to lower the cost point and still let the MIA stand out. But they were made alongside the jp domestic market JV strats, and are superb.
