The American Taliban wins again as #motorcyclevagina passes the house. It will pass the Senate too and put the heat on McCrony. 7/11/2013 6:12:44 PM |

My money is on McCrony doing one of two things. Either he weasels out and lets it go into law without signing, or he vetoes it knowing that full well that there are enough Regressives in both chambers to override it, thus giving him a cop out to say "well, I kept my promise *wink* *wink*" 7/11/2013 6:29:46 PM |

I'm a white, first born male in my family so I think the NCGA will still let me vote... Need to re-read the absurdly large suppression list again though to make sure. Can't remember if they are letting Wake, Durham and Mecklenberg counties vote still. 7/23/2013 10:08:07 AM |

Danger! My Voter Suppression Detector (TM) is going off...
Today @NCCapitol (July 23): Elections bill reveal and budget votes on tap
Quote : | "-Eliminate pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds, who currently can register to vote before they turn 18. -Outlaw paid voter registration drives. -Eliminate same-day voter registration during early voting. -Eliminate provisional voting if someone shows up at the wrong precinct. -Allow voters to be challenged by any registered voter of the county rather than just a voter of the precinct in which they are registered. -Shorten the two-and-a-half week early-voting period by a week. -Prohibit counties from offering voting on the last Saturday before the election beyond 1 p.m. -Prohibit counties from extending poll hours by one hour on Election Day in extraordinary circumstances, such as in response to long lines. -Eliminate straight-ticket voting. -Move the presidential primary to first Tuesday after SC – if SC holds its primary before March 15. Study electronic filing for campaign returns. -Increase the maximum campaign contribution per election from $4,000 to $5,000. -Loosen disclosure requirements for IE committees. -Repeal the publicly-funded election program for appellate court judges. a lot of conservatives i know are also highly displeased with this legislature. they are outing themselves as typical corrupt politicians by pushing through shit like this voter stuff (I supported the voter ID bill which i know a lot of you don't, but I don't support any of the other stuff they added to it like shortening early voting and not allowing teens to pre-register, which to me makes no sense.) and education.
they had a really good chance to make a good impact on the budget and economy, but have spent most of their time fighting petty battles and getting "payback" (or that's how it looks to me)

As a former registered Republican, I am very displeased with the vast majority of the bills proposed and/or passed by this GA. I, too, don't have a problem with voter ID (if done properly with proper access to IDs and sensible controls... which this GA wouldn't have done anyways), but the rest is so clearly voter suppression, it's laughable. Though I fear even lawsuits can't touch this law... unless someone has some leaked information pointed directly to voter suppression. Now as I think about it, the only bill I remember fully supporting was HB937 (omnibus gun bill). I don't have a problem with income tax decreases, though I never really saw the true impact on middle/lower classes... though I don't care for tax breaks for the rich (at this period in time). "Outlawing" parts of Obamacare because it's "government intrusion into private lives" was dumb, considering our state's financial issues; and that reasoning flies in the face of the abortion bill that passed. I think I'd rather have seen income tax rates decreased on the lower tiers (if at all) and provided state employee/teacher pay raises. I don't have a big problem with getting rid of tenure, but that should have been accompanied by a well-thought out plan for performanced based pay, incentives pay, etc.; cutting TAs and increasing classroom sizes was also a bad move, IMO.
But we all know that this GA is just trying to pass legislation to suit their friends aka big business and uber-conservative "family/christian" groups. 7/26/2013 10:33:17 AM |

Protesters gave McCory hell yesterday to where he had to slip out a side entrance. It was over his lie about not signing abortion legislation. One sign said it all "We voted for jobs, not far right wind ideology". In other words right now he and especially GOP NCGA members may be in trouble. Voter suppression doesn't take effect until after the 2014 election but it will be there for 2016 when McCrory is up again (so its impact will have to be watched). 7/27/2013 10:31:49 AM |

Pay to Play Tillis: http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/07/26/3061081/tillis-pushed-several-major-political.html
When his fellow Republicans questioned why House Speaker Thom Tillis backed a Democrat to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors in March, the speaker had a simple reason:
R. Doyle Parrish had raised a lot of money.
“I would estimate he is directly responsible for more than $100,000.00 in financial support through personal contributions to my campaign committee and other candidates and through the Hospitality Alliance,” Tillis wrote in a March 21 email to House leaders.
Tillis also strongly supported G.A. Sywassink for the board, even after the Republican caucus rejected Sywassink because he lives in South Carolina. The House narrowly elected Sywassink after Tillis circulated a list of his preferred candidates that included Sywassink.
Sywassink, owner of a Charlotte freight company, had given $7,500 to Tillis’ campaign for the state House. In June, Sywassink gave $25,000 and Parrish gave $20,000 to the super PAC supporting Tillis’ bid for the U.S. Senate next year.

Anyone surprised that a so-called conservative is opposed to cuts when it threatens their career directly?
Is it true that public school teachers only make 31k their first four years? No wonder there's such a dearth of talent in the school system. You'd have to either be really passionate or really fucking stupid to become a teacher at those wages. Most of my high school teachers were the latter.7/27/2013 11:55:50 PM |
