Getting Khudobin locked up is the key, and apparently they're already in contract talks. If we see a 2-3 year deal for him prior to the trade deadline, there's going to be "Ward to X" rumors flying like crazy.

yup. I know it is only one season but he really seems like the real deal. Khudobin is 4th in the league in Sv% at the moment.
Cam Ward's stats:
Year GP SV% Sv%Rk 13-14 19 .895 43rd 12-13 17 .908 26th 11-12 68 .915 21st 10-11 74 .924 6th 09-10 47 .916 12th
Since the start of the 09-10 season, Cam Ward has started 221 out of 350 contests(63%). So he is starting less than 2/3 of our games, is statistically one of the worst starting goaltenders in the league over the last few years, and is the 4th highest paid goalie in the league. His salary is set to increase slightly over the next two years as well.
You can pin some of his woe on the shitty defense, but he played horribly this season behind the same D that Khudobin and Peters have both thrived with.
Oh, and another thing to think about is his complete ineptness in the shootout. Out of all active goalies(79 total), Cam comes in at 58th in save percentage with .615. I honestly couldn't believe that it was that high. Most of the goalies ranked below him have only a handful of shootouts, so he really doesn't compare to other starting goalies. His shootout record is 11-24.
Not really trying to trash on the man. He brought us some really great stuff for quite some time. But he just isn't reliable anymore and when he does play it is mediocre at best. If we can find someone that wants to take that salary I would not care what we got in return, as long as it wasn't a significant amount of salary coming back. I hate to see it and admit it, but I think Cam is on the decline. We can really position ourselves for some success in the very near future if Khudobin is the real deal, and if we can shed Cam's contract.

The entire franchise pretty much needs to be blown up from the players to the front office. If this team can't get it done then it's hard to see any iteration of it getting it done with this front office, coach, and core players. 2/27/2014 8:57:31 PM |
GenghisJohn bonafide 10252 Posts user info edit post |
I think that's a bit extreme. I think we have the parts to make a top six that can compete. We need a third line that can be a more consistent threat, especially at center, where Nash is good only for a streak here and there. And then we get to defense- outside of Sekera and Faulk we are just blah:
Goaltending...not even gonna touch that:

i agree that he will be traded -- however i dont know if its going to happen tomorrow
a lot of teams have gotten their goaltending over the past couple days, and Ward has a high cap hit -- I feel like if we sell now at Ward's lowest we aren't going to get shit for a return; in fact, it feels more like a cap dump at this point and we might have to add
i think it might be more likely that we sell what we can tomorrow, and try to build up cam's confidence as much as we can the rest of the way and hope he plays well over the last bit and trade him at the draft
otherwise i dont know what we can expect at the deadline for an expensive goaltender who is at his lowest point, career wise. unless we need to dump cap space in which case we are going to have to add some assets.
[Edited on March 4, 2014 at 7:34 PM. Reason : then again we may need to take what we can get now, i doubt cam is too happy w/ anton extension] 3/4/2014 7:32:27 PM |

I don't think he has much space to complain.
Martin Brodeur is not happy because he's led his franchise to glory time and time again, and he's not getting the shot he thinks he's earned over his entire career. Right or wrong when viewed objectively, he has a legitimate grievance as a New Jersey Devil.
In Ward's case, a two-year deal for Khudobin appears to finally be the thing the Canes have been seeking for seven years; a true 1A goaltender who can push (or push out) Ward. They've never signed a guy who could really take a run at his #1 spot until now, even when his play hasn't justified his position or his pay. I don't think this is necessarily true, but you could argue that he's been somewhat coddled for his entire career. If he's upset about Khudobin, he can fix it by stopping pucks. 3/5/2014 1:34:40 AM |

As long as we retained 1/3 or less I see it as a win. Loktionov is at 750k, this year, RFA next... And doesn't have stellar numbers. He should be cheap. Ruutu has 5mm this and 5mm next, with a 4.75 hit.
If we retained 1/3, fine by me. Still gives us room, and add on room from jokinen and joslin contracts that we ate this year... We can have somewhere north of 3 million in cap space by getting rid of ruutu (1 million from Jussi and joslin, 3.5 from ruutu, and loktionov will probably set us back 1 to 1.25).
Obviously some of this is eaten by khudobins new deal, but breathing room is nice. 3/5/2014 7:08:44 PM |

Just wait till they send the playoff invoices. Because we aren't mathematically out, yet!
I'm lulzing at the pricing. For a premium game, I can spend $50 on a seat that I spent $70 on for the Stanley Cup Finals. And they've made the playoffs once since. How fucked up is that?
The sth pricing on a per game basis is still fairish. But they've priced out any single gamers. 3/8/2014 6:50:44 PM |

I know the idea of the Fan Zone is to get people to buy ST in that area, but four times the STH price for a "premium" game? Holy shit.
