I'd really like to pick up Ennis.

and Washington mentioned the team was going in a different direction than what he wanted...

Guess he meant less shooting by our centers.

We were deep and loaded looking at next year. You can't get great players to come in a year or two in advance (which is when you start recruiting guys for this years class)...unless you have a crystal fucking ball and know that Lacey and Washington are going to leave. You don't know what kind of year Lacey is going to have...he's not a Rodney Hood transfer type guy who said he only wanted to play one year and knew he was going to be a first round pick.

And you couldn't have predicted Washington a year in advance either.

Bottom line is that the game is changing. At the same time, the post-grad transfer game is huge now too...so we better jump on that shit. And/or really go after Newman hard.

^^^or actually trying to play defense. He was prolly sold that we would be getting out and running and gunning. However, we don't really have the personnel for that, so we're stuck in a more traditional half court/defense type game. Which he is not very good at

Yeah, looks like to me that Gottfried wants to establish a big man post up game instead of Washington's midrange game, which I am cool with.

my DREAM scenario now is:
Newman comes in to replace Lacey
Ingram replaces Washington
Ennis replaces Wallace/Lee

Ennis cut his list to several teams (including Duke, LSU) and we're nowhere to be found. So barring a last minute run, he's out.

Unless something crazy happens I doubt we pick up a top recruit. My hope is for a post-grad PG that can back-up Cat (was honestly hoping for this with or without Lacey next year).

With Cat, Henderson, Martin twins, Abu, Freeman/Anya we'll be more athletic next season so we might see the defense improve and offense we'll be shooting less 3's, and probably be looking to drive the ball more into the paint. Should lead to more rebounding opportunities for Abu/Freeman/Anya as well.

lol this year was a rebuilding year.

With this one and done and transfer culture we are in, every year is rebuilding for next year.

Damn, that sucks that Ennis is out. Someone his size and ability would have worked out well.

Duke will probably get him.

I think Coach K has finally figured out the whole one and one game...Gottfried is big in the transfer world. I'd like to see a good mix of both.

I think we'll be a solid team next year even with all the attrition. I really can't wait and see how the twins develop because as freshmen they already show a glimpse of their potential, they're really versatile players. If they can improve their scoring and defense then they'll be headaches of any team to deal with. I'm looking forward to seeing Abu make a huge improvement and also wish Anya will become a bigger scoring threat. Add Henderson, Cat, and a transfer and/or late recruit and we'll be OK. Cat, Henderson, and Caleb can shoot the 3 ball, but wish Got recruits another sniper shooter.

This is becoming the problem with our program is that we are kind of this in between school. We are not a Duke or Kentucky where we are getting the one and done guys that matter. We are getting guys who think they are a little better than they actually are and end up being this in between guy who leaves early to go play in the D league (TJ is the exception here). This is constantly leaving us in bad positions as far as progressing. The reason all these other teams like Miami and Florida State have managed to win the ACC is because they get that one year where their roster is full of experienced guys to make the final push. We keep getting close to that year but then it gets blown up.

Now granted this has been much more exciting than the Lowe era dont get me wrong, but if we want to ever get another ACC title we are either gonna have to find a way to recruit the best guys in the country, or figure out how to keep a core group together long enough to reach its full potential.

If we managed to close out recruiting with Newman and Papagiannis, with both actually arriving and playing next year...then I'll consider it an overall win for Gott despite losing 2 players.

I would love to add a player like Ingram, but I just don't see him picking us over UNC, Kentucky, and/or Duke. If we beat out those 3 for a player, that would be something. But Duke scheduling 2 in-home visits makes me somewhat curious, thought they were the leader, but now looks like they're trying to play the catch-up game.

Meh, I don't see missing out on Ennis to be a big deal, not even sure we ever offered him. Seems like our coaches are being really selective of who they target, and we've already passed on Mitchell so not sure we'd really go after a guy like Ennis until we knew what Newman would do.

^^ I think we're slowly working our way up to that level...its just not easy. And I'd rather have what we had the past couple years than one really good year and no tourney for a year or two like the other teams you mentioned.

We just need that one really big breakout year (this year could have been it...dammit)...where the top recruits take notice and we get one or two of them. Who knows, maybe we get Newman and Ingram and this is where we turn the corner.

So our expectations went from probably top four in ACC a few weeks ago to Duke and UNC as favorites and who knows for us. I should have known better.

Eh, Ingram definitely helps them, but he needs to put on a lot of weight. He's more of a 2/3 year type player - not sure he makes them a favorite for the ACC after losing Winslow, Cook, Okafor & Jones.

I honestly think State's still got a decent shot at finishing in the ACC's top 4.

I think UVA losing Atkins & Anderson has them taking a step back, that's the ACC defensive player of the year and their best player/most consistent scorer. They'll still be solid with the system the play, but I'm not sold on them being a lock in the ACC's top 4.

Same goes for FSU, it's Rathan-Mayes and lot of talented freshmen, not sure that they'll just be flat out better than State next year, still think State's got a decent shot at it. I think other than having the guys with the highest cieling (Cat/Abu) taking major steps forward to make up the scoring we lose with Lacey, Anya's the one we need to develop the most. Having him get in better condition, put on some muscle and be able to play more minutes could be huge for our defense.

We were ranked above FSU weeks ago when we were projected top 15 with Lacey on-board. At that time Duke was actually ranked lower than us with the expected losses. I'll agree even with Lacey, Duke would have passed us with their recent commitments.

If we had Lacey I'd say we're definitely above FSU. I do expect teams like Louisville and ND to be better than they're being projected.

UVA will still be really good, but on paper, UNC should be the favorite to win the ACC this year.

of course we do. don't ever worry about STATEments like we "could" or "it's possible"... its the we "should" statements that get out of control on the message boards.

we definitely have a shot at top 4... we also definitely have a shot at the 5-10 range too.

The thing about those rankings after the tournament. They were reactionary to the tournament. Weve always shown the ability to string together a few nice performances but until i see more, id never put us above teams with similar talent who have also proven they can be consistent with that talent.(the 4 teams above) Losing Lacey elevated our ceiling but i dont really see the overall season playing out much different without him.

The same logic applies to uva. Losing those guys lowers their season but its not like theyll sudde ly stop playing excellent, smart basketball on both ends

Losing to a legendary coach who always seems to make the final four is not choking.

Also i meant to say losing lacey lowered our ceiling.

i think we are pretty solid at all positions but i'd feel a lot better if we had some backup for cat. the only solid player who could quasi fill in at PG was lacey. IIRC caleb played a minute or some at point unless i was imagining it but i wouldn't count on converting a shooter.

not sure how losing Lacey dropped us completely out of the rankings, and how some polls have FSU and Miami ranked.

I do. Lacey was a potential ACC POY. Now we only have one real ball-handler, and will have to have wings taking the secondary ball-handling duties (and backing-up our point guard).
