i never understood why grad rates matter for athletics, it seems kind of like a conflict of interest since the university itself is responsible for giving grades out. they can just give out A's to all players, or, you know, have someone else write papers and turn them in for the athletes.

"Anyway, I guess this thread just doesn't excite me as much as you guys because I know, by and large, things like this are happening at every high-major school out there, including ours... those who get caught get punished and have to reform for a few years before cheating again and those who don't get caught just go on cheating without any problems."

Do these same schools make it their God give right to thumb their arrogance, prestige, and cleanliness in the face of almost every other school in the country? I know your allegiance lies mostly towards the Big East, so maybe you don't fully grasp the magnitude of the hypocrisy being proven in the last few months.

Believe it or not, this is close to a life changing event for many of these holier than thou blue bloods. There is not a more arrogant fan/alumni base than UNC-CH. IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE.

"57% if pretty bottom of the barrel in the ACC, isn't it? Not really much to be proud of, but also no rumors of impropriety so I guess that's good."

i might be remembering wrong, but I think I heard Joe DeLamielleure on the Packman show either last Thursday or Friday say that he did some checking and about 5-6 years ago, there were only like 4-5 BCS football programs in the country with graduation rates over 50%

granted if a player goes pro after his junior year and never comes back to graduate, that hurts the graduation rate, even if that player had a 4.0 while he was at

his idea was say if you don't have a graduation rate of over 50% you can't play in a bowl game...he made it sound like there would only be a few bowl games each year if that were the case, given current graduation rates

he also said at Michigan State, they used to take classes like 'Games' where they would play duck duck goose and shit like that...and they'd get credit hours so they could remain eligible, but the credit hours wouldnt count towards any majors...the idea was again, just to keep them eligible to play, with zero intention of any of them ever graduating

i'll have to find the podcast and remember what he was actually talking about

could be graduation rates for all programs in a school, but that wouldnt make much sense as you'd expect most of the non revenue sport athletes would actually go to class and graduate more than the average football or basketball player

^any way to find archives of those for say, the last 10 years?

I don't think it comes down to anyone one thing

Duke and Wake are great (liberal arts) schools ranked at the top

UVA is a great (liberal arts) school, ranked in the middle, below shithole schools like Miami and FSU

Georgia Tech is a great (engineering) school, ranked dead f'in last

The main point is that its hilarious that borderline mental invalids can graduate at an 80% clip while attending a "Public Ivy".

Yeah.. I wouldn't really be bragging that football players are graduating at a higher percent than the normal student body when you brag that your school is elite academically.. I'd be a little suspicious of.. Maybe... I don't know.. Grade inflation or very helpful "tutors"

re: Joe DeLamielleure

http://wfnz.cbslocal.com/2010/09/03/primetime-packman-goes-off/#more-12145 - 17 minute mark starts the call

he said about 30% of college football players who go on to play in the NFL graduate

pretty interesting listen, he calls in for like 6 minutes

when he said 5-6 years ago, maybe he meant 10-15, dunno

Problem is you guys hate us, too. I am probably going to go to my first game in Dowdy-Ficklen in October for our game... I don't expect a welcome reception being a State fan.

Yea, most ECU fans can relate to most State fans.

No one that doesn't work at banana republic can relate to unc fans. And we honestly feel that they've used their political clout to hold us down with state funding for facilities and the dental program and on and on. And obviously everyone can agree that they think their junk doesn't stink.

ECU/State is a healthy rivalry. I mean ya'll have alot more resources and generally lead most sports series but its always a great time to watch ECU v. State.

We don't feel like state has done very much to hold us down. So its all good. Ya'll are good people for the most part, IMO.

And when it comes to digging a grace for UNC, I will hold hands and sing kumbayah with state fans ALLL DAYYYY LOONNNNGGG!!!!!!

Beth Bridger is still an employee in their academic services office. Mary Willingham was another name that got thrown around, but she still works there too.

^ this tutor issue was figured out a while back, by me, not to be anyone on the UNC- CH cached athletic dept pages, because the girl was an undergrad at UNC-CH when she was contributing to the graduation/eligibility rate. All those people in the front office are admin types.
