I can't afford drinks because I'm a photoholic not alcoholic. I do have $300 worth of hard liquor in my room, but I only bought them for photo taking...

Unfortunately I've noticed a trend since I bought my D40. In low light ISO1600 shots (sometimes in normal ISO ranges though, like ISO 200) I'll have some reg/green/blue dots appear on my images. It's actually pretty annoying, and I'm just curious if it's dust on the sensor or something.
In this image (full res, straight from the camera): http://www4.ncsu.edu/~chfranci/DSC_0029.JPG
I can count at least 5 red dots, 2 green dots, and 2 blue dots.
WTF?

are the dots in the same place everytime or completely different?? 7/3/2008 10:53:45 AM |

From what I can tell they're in the same spot every time.
I did the 'mirror-lockup' thing real quick to take a look at it, and yes it looks like there's a few dots on the sensor.
Damnit. 7/3/2008 10:56:30 AM |

I did a little more research, and apparently I have a few 'stuck pixels'. You can send your camera to Nikon to have them remap them out of the sensor so they're not used to help create the image. Unfortunately I have a trip coming up on the 26th, and I'm trying to avoid sending in my camera. In fact, I bought the camera for the trip...
...grrr. 7/3/2008 11:15:53 AM |
Nitrocloud Arranging the blocks 3072 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, that's definitely a bad sensor. You've got quite a few elements that are stuck on. They're plus shaped because of the way the sensor uses RGB sensitive elements to compose an image where certain ones are sensitive to a particular color.
Would be nice if Nikon would send you a loaner or a new body completely. 7/3/2008 2:52:30 PM |

Two separate issues:
1: Pixel issue
2: Dropping camera issue -- last night while taking my camera + 2 lenses out of my car in the camera bag, my girlfriend dropped it on the sidewalk. There's not a lot of padding in there, so it made an expensive noise. I believe it landed on my 55-200 VR lens, because the camera body itself is fine -- no scratches/dents/dings at all. It works perfectly, except for the aforementioned pixel issue (discovered before the dropping incident).
I talked to Nikon and they said they could fix or replace the camera body due to the pixel issue, and the guy on the phone agreed that it was under warranty since that was before the dropping incident. They also said they'd be happy to look at the 55-200 VR lens. I don't believe the VR is as effective as it once was, and if nothing else it sounds like there's a grain of sand in it when I zoom. Otherwise, both work fine. I'll ship them both out on Monday and let everyone know how Nikon's customer service is.
The 18-55mm lens that was also in the bag is broken, but mostly due to me. After it was dropped, I noticed that it wasn't zooming as smoothly as it had before. Having all this stuff dropped was the last straw in a long line of things that have fucked up over the past week or so, and I lost my temper. I got pissed when I was examining the zoom ring, jammed it to one end too far, and it was stuck. Angry at that, I ripped the thing apart. So yes, my 18-55mm kit lens is now in multiple pieces in the garbage...
I replaced it today at Wolfcamera with the 18-55 VR version, hehe...$192.14 should teach me to keep my temper under control...

i can promise you the body will take a f'ing BEATING. Someone in a drunken rage through my D50 through a wall...went through the drywall, cracked part of the piece on the lenses that is responsible for holding it to the body but the body was completely undamaged and still takes find pics to this day

I'm just pissed off that I didn't get to take any fireworks pictures and probably that's why the pictures sucked. But the still life shots came out really good. Products & sports are probably the two categories I'm really good at. 7/6/2008 12:41:22 PM |

I really like that second Carmen's picture, though a couple stops smaller of an aperture might make the phone number on the card more easily readable...and thus a GREAT promo pic for the restaurant 7/6/2008 5:52:41 PM |

took it using my D40x left the shutter on bulb f5.6 still not as awesome as I was hoping it would be. only editing I've done is just make the picture a bit smaller, b/c the original was huge on this board. I got like a hundred of pix of the fireworks, but they all look like that. ]

Did it. I just liked the Bokeh of the larger aperture one and it matched the ambient really good.

I agree, I like the bokeh (new term for me, thanks for the heads-up) on the original...in fact I like the original better overall, but the improvement in DoF for the subject area might make me--if "me" was the restaurant owner--use the latter.
What was/is your setup? The picture looks exactly the same other than the background and DoF. I've heard of using plastic wrap to simulate crushed ice in beverage shots, is that what you did? 7/7/2008 7:17:24 AM |

^^^ Jbaz, I like that pic. Very nice DoF but I would think the mint leaves and lime need sharpening. Other than that great pic. (I'm not a pro either and it's probably better than a picture I could take but I just wanted to add my comment) 7/7/2008 3:10:39 PM |

nothing special, ring light left of camera, about 1 foot up. Camera on tripod for about 1 second exposure. Just shot as is with no prep. Asked for drinks, shot, and consumed in 5 minutes.
Anyhow, Model shoot from Sunday.

need gear advice!
I'm shopping for a tripod head, looking at something like a manfrotto 486 - a small ballhead to keep a nikon d40 in position with medium size lenses, also needs to be fairly cheap. So a quick release head would cost a little more, but I'm not sure I'd use it since for the foreseeable future I will only have one camera and no big lenses. I am planning on doing outdoor stuff on a tripod, so it seems like it would speed up tripod setup just to have the QR plate on the camera and be able to just plunk it on top.
thoughts? 7/9/2008 9:02:17 AM |
