You're not really comparing what's happening on this thread to the football program under Amato, are you? I think there's a general consensus that kids, and everyone else had a right to be bitching during Amato's last few years.

Amato was at State 7 years. He was 34-17 his first four years with one of State's best-ever players leading the team at qb . During those four years, he was 4-4,4-4,5-3 and 4-4 in the ACC (which ain't that good).

Then Rivers left. In Amato's final 3 years he went 15-20 , with ACC records of 3-5, 3-5, and 2-6, and missed bowl games 2 of those 3 seasons.

That is an unimpressive tenure as coach. There was no improvement from season to season. Things were just getting worse. A change was needed.

Sid only has two seasons under his belt. He's trying to set up an entirely different system, and so far he's missed out on a pg or backcourt that will compliment his system. But he's landed a few solid recruits and one of the biggest recruit the team's ever had, and has some high-caliber guards and others committed for the future, and we're still in the running for 3 of the nation's best.

It's not stupid to critique Sid's coaching ability, or to be disappointed with how the team is playing and to question how much of that falls at his feet. Butkids are stupid if they're calling for Lowe's termination right now, or if they're expecting the team to be competing for an ACC championship or even if they think we should be deadlocked to make the NCAA tournament this year. They're also stupid if they're saying things like "Sid was a PG, so javi should be better than he is". Kids are stupid if they can't see that this team is a better team than last year's, even after losing our two top scorers, and we should be better next year. If we're not in the tournament next year, then some of the bitching on this thread won't be as stupid as it is right now.

I'm aware of that. Who knows, without him we might have done better. But I'm talking about the fact that Lowe landed him. His recruitment and quick leap to the NBA has been and will continue to be a plus for future top recruits looking at us.

Man, how many times has this been discussed? Yes, he's missed out on a decent PG so far, we're all very aware of that. Some of that is his fault, but how much of that is his fault is debatable, and his '09 and '10 recruiting makes it clear that he's working to rectify that situation.

I thought Lowe was going to be able to recruit the best point guards because he has NBA ties that would get them into the league?? And because he was a great college pg and knows what it takes to get to the league?? He landed JJ Hickson...why can't he land a good PG??

what an idiot. of course this is all speculation and neither of us can say the other is right or wrong at this point, but i think that with the recruits sidney has coming in and the type of game we will be able to play with ball handlers (brown), shooters (wood) and a couple scoring big men- tracy smith, howell- we will NOT be worse than we are this year. so you're not an idiot now. but i think you will look like one come next year.

keep in mind that our pg situation has been bothered by injuries. when you miss as much time as both degand and gonzales have, their ball handling is going to suffer. degand looks sloppy and out of control at times, but he's getting better and was our best chance at breaking the press against clemson. mays is making typical freshman mistakes, but shows promise to be a solid player for us in the future. the more he becomes comfortable with the offense the more we'll see of him. javi is going to have to work extremely hard to be a serviceable guard again though.

i didn't expect sid to do anything with recruiting the first 2 years because he had virtually no relationships built yet. in the world of college bball recruiting, some of these kids are getting looked at as early as their freshman/sophomore year and some even as early as middle school. the best thing he did early on was keep larry harris on staff because of the ties he already had and it kept some continuity with the program. larry harris doesn't define the program though, he's just a small piece so it's understandable that we still missed out on guys because they didn't know who sidney lowe was yet. it was an absolute miracle that we were able to land hickson when we did and even through the results weren't instant, it will and has helped us out in recruiting for the future. next year's class is arguably sid's first real class. he's been having to play catch up against coaches that have been in contact with these kids for years.

it's going to be a rough year as many of you are aware, but our program is nowhere near getting run into the ground. i'm very excited about our future.

Yeah, I see no way we are better next year.

That's not an indictment on Lowe, but rather a reality of having too rely on too many freshman. UConn two years ago comes to mind (they had 7 frosh and 2 sophs)... best case. Wall might make us a tourney team, but probably a borderline one at best. We are going to have to be in this for the long haul if it's going to work with Lowe, no doubt...

All I want to see this year is a team that is playing hard (so far, so good) and the development of Smith, Mays and Williams (I have my doubts).

Here is the correct order of events:

Lowe lands at least one of those top recruits (wall/favors/cousins) or we get better. If not, Lowe is on the hot seat and Fowler must be fired. Honestly, if we get Wall and don't make the NCAAT, Lowe should also be on the hot seat. You can't waste NBA-level talent like that. One superstar guard is good enough to make a tournament team.

The next year after that, we have to make a tourney. If not, Lowe gets the boot.

It is imperative that Fowler gets fired 6 months-1year before we fire Lowe. The redneck should not be allowed to make another hiring decision. We need the new AD in place ready to perform a search.

(New AD has to be someone with an eye for talent, knowledge of the game, and strong connections with people who also know the game. This is how we found valvano, this is how most great coaches are discovered. It's rare for a school to be able to buy a "name" coach.)
