The guy in the carjack thread did a very dangerous thing. If he has hit that guy, he would be in deep shit. Once the perp is fleeing or no longer a threat, deadly force is not an option.

In most cases where this is applicable, it would be a jury of your peers interpreting the law, not a judge

the last thing the judge does before he sends the jury back to deliberate is explain the law to them

what i'm getting at is you can't use "well, my CC instructor said blah blah blah..." as a defense in court

Do you still need a pistol permit to buy a handgun at a gun show?

Yes. Technically you need one for any type of transaction for a pistol.

Just do it. It's only 5 dollars, it's legit, and it's good for up to 5 years.

yeah- most places won't even think about selling you one without it. I would be wary of dealing with someone who did. Especially if something went wrong with the gun. Also, those would be the type so sell stolen weapons. At these things, they make it very hard for someone to sell one without a permit, but I've heard of it happening

You need a pistol purchasing permit (or concealed handgun permit) in all transactions involving a handgun.
In practice all FFLs will require a purchasing permit.
In practice with private individuals, many sellers won't collect a purchasing permit from the buyer even though it's required.

So, I got a Geissele DMR 2 stage adjustable trigger and installed it in my LWRC M6A2. To do so, I had to machine out some metal on the selector switch. I don't want to have bare metal exposed in my rifle, especially in the fire control group. Anyone have a gunsmith they can recommend to re-parkerize the selector switch? Local would be preferred but I don't mind sending it off to get it done.

Do you have access to a sand blaster?
If so you can refinish it yourself with some KG Gunkote.
I've done an 870 and some mags in Gunkote with good results.

But, buying the gunkote and airbrush won't be worth your time unless you pan on refinishing other stuff.

Same as here for the most part. Open carry in alcohol-serving restaurants is OK - concealed is not.

Actually, I've never had an FFL fail to require a permit or CCW. Ever. I've bought a pile of handguns over the years, and have friends who have bought many many more, probably adding up to hundreds of transactions with FFLs. I haven't heard of one where the buyer was not required to produce a CCW or permit. No matter whether it took place at a show or anywhere else.

I've also never met a private seller that would sell without a permit/CCW, though I guess your mileage will vary, and anyway it'd be hard to find a buyer who would publicly admit to obtaining a handgun paper-free in this state. Based upon my experiences, I can't say I concur with your assesment of "many" sellers not requiring a permit.

"Many" is a very loose term.
Compared to the number of FFL transfers I'd say the percentage of illegal private transactions falls into the "many" category.
A lot (maybe even most) of private transactions I've known about were without a CHP or purchasing permit. That's mostly due to ill informed sellers; all of which are acquaintances or friends of the buyers.
I live in the boonies, so I'm sure it's different than your experiences.

I stopped by Gunners Alley in Cary for the first time today, to pick up a gun belt. I ended up walking out with a Comp-Tac holster and Surefire as well. Ouch. Great store, very nice guys running the place, without the usual gunstore BS I'm used to from some other local shops.

Honestly, it's more of an accessory shop. I think there were less then 10 guns behind the counter.
I know I spent a little more than if I bought the stuff online (tax etc.), but I'm kind of glad to spend the money locally.

Anyway, A+ on their customer service.

Went out to a big bore shoot this Saturday at the RWVA home range at Ramseur. They have a pop up target range out to 500 yards. I took my fulton armory .308 titan out there hoping it fit into the big bore category. Turns out pretty much anything bigger than .22 goes. They won't turn you away since they want people to get out there and shoot. One guy was shooting an AR-15, one guy had an M1 garand (500 yards with iron sights!). Another had an FNAR standard with a Leupold Mark4 scope on it.

The course of fire was 10 rounds @200 yards slow fire standing, 10 rounds @ 200 yards rapid fire sitting, 10 rounds @ 300 yards slow sitting, and 20 rounds @ 500 yards slow fire prone.

My rifle weights about 12 lbs, most of it in the barrel. My 20" heavyweight stainless match barrel would quickly strain my arm and then I would get shaky while I held it standing and even prone. Sitting was actually really steady since I could rest my arm on my knee without it hitting the corner of the magazine. That was the problem with prone. I kept stabbing my forearm with the bottom corner of the magazine.

I did pretty well at 200 yards. 300 I fucked up my sight adjustment and went down. I still put them all on the target but very low and to the right. I realized I fucked up my sight and fixed it, and zero'd in at 500 yards. Did the 500 shoot and had a good group and then a group off to the right due to my trigger pull. My trigger is just the standard GI trigger, i.e. it sucks. I'm getting a Geissele SSA to put in my carbine and a 2 stage adjustable to go in the .308.

I think next time I might just shoot the whole thing with a bipod just to see how well the gun can do at range.

Everyone out there was pretty friendly except one dude who didn't speak to anyone really. He was a good shot but had all the fancy gear, stiff shooting jacket and such. If anyone's interested it's the first Saturday of every month. I'm going next month.

you'd be surprised, dude. The USMC rifle qual includes prone shooting from the 500 yard line (or maybe it's 500m...I don't know. Whatever.)

I've hit 9/10 torso silhouettes (basically the outline of a man from the waist up) with a ratty old peep-sighted M-16 straight out of the armory, and I think I've gotten 8/10 with a peep-sighted M-4.

but yeah, telescopic sights are very much the preferred method out at that range, haha.

get something that has the appearance of a hunting shotgun but the functionality of a home defense shotgun. it'll be cheaper and it looks better if it is ever presented as evidence against you in court.
