they pop up, but don't tell you very much about the event you set them for. for example, say you have a dentist appointment tomorrow at 5pm, and you set the reminder for one day prior, it pops up and says dentist appointment, but the date comes up as today. it lists the time/date of the reminder, not for the actual appointment.

is there some app that'll help with this, or am i stuck with it for now?"

since I don't have my phone still, I can't say for sure this would work, but from what I've read it seems like a lot of people use Astrid for task/todo/appointments. I know it obviously has reminders built into that app but not sure about the detail given just in the pop-up. Once again, I haven't used it myself.

"We're not certain that this date is going to hold -- things like this have an uncanny tendency to slip at the last possible moment -- but we're at least hopeful to see some internal Sprint communication that they're trying to get the EVO 4G updated to Froyo as soon as tomorrow, July 30. It'd be the perfect way to kick off the weekend, wouldn't it? Turns out this is no mere 2.2 upgrade, though -- they're making a bunch of changes, too, including a host of new preloaded widgets, a flashlight mode for the camera's LED flash, light-assisted 720p video, and "improvement" to the quality of said video capture (something we specifically complained about in our review). Unfortunately, it looks like the hotspot hack might be sealed off with this update, but that really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. As we said, we're hopefully the date sticks, because Sprint has identified it as a "high priority for competitive reasons" -- in other words, these guys must be feeling the Droid heat -- but the PR is apparently going to identify the week of August 1 as the first push, so the devices getting the OTA tomorrow might just be a very small, select group to ensure that nothing spectacularly bad happens. We're pulling for you, EVO owners."

Decided to return my Evo while within the 30 days. It had some hardware issue with the Wifi sleep function, and while I was getting great battery life on Wifi, it sucked on 3G. So if they're not back in stock by the time the Epic comes out (probably ~Aug 20), I'll probably pick up one of those.

Or...Any word on when the Droid 2 is coming out?

Was up til 4am last night rooting my phone and putting the wireless tether stuff on it. Had to do a little work on the Incredible to make it work in Infrastructure mode with WPA2, but it works like a damn champ now.

Didn't do the 2.2 update, and will just go back to stock once the actual 2.2 update hits, and then root again if VZW blocks the hotspot functionality.

Sprint has just announced what we all were hoping for -- the Evo 4G will be getting Froyo starting August 3, making Sprint the first carrier to upgrade their devices to Android 2.2. Hit our story HERE to see what's included with the update. Sprint says that the OTA will roll out in stages, but they will be providing a manual download link for those of us who just can't wait. (That's you and I ) Yes, we'll have a nice set of simplified instructions to make it as easy as possible, just as soon as we get the link and the method. Check out the source link to see Sprint's official announcement"

Samsung is the biggest mobile manufacturer in the U.S.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/07/comscore-samsung-edges-out-motorola-in-us-mobile-market-share/

They do seem to have a bad record lately in the blogosphere for not keeping "promises" to update phones (or phone, the Behold 2 is all I've heard about having this issue) with the latest Android versions. But most people who actually care enough about that root their phones and can probably get a ROM for it online (assuming it's at least somewhat popular).

I think it's just a bunch of whining babies who are upset because a company isn't willing to put
resources into updating a phone that sold like crap. If you want to be fairly sure to get updates, buy a phone that's going to be popular. You won't have to worry about updates with Droid X, Droid 2, Evo, or Galaxy S. They should've bought a Droid, but they went for the cheapo Behold 2. Too bad, so sad.

^Thanks for that. The Verizon deals don't look that bad compared to AT&T. If I can ever figure out this Sipdroid stuff, then it could even be competitive with the Sprint deals. Anyone know if there's a way to get a deal with Verizon like with Sprint's Time-Warner thing (i.e. use a "friends-and-family" deal or some employee thing where they don't actually verify it?)

Damn, just realized: the Droid X is considered the flagship and not the Droid 2? WTF? The original Droid was the first really great, popular Android phone. Plus, Droid X doesn't have Qwerty. Did everyone really buy into Chairman Jobs's crap about touchscreens being better than Qwerty?

Aside from the 4.3" screen, the specs are identical iirc (same processor, same app memory, etc). Only other difference is that the Droid 2 has a physical keyboard and will come with an 8GB MicroSD card instead of a 16.

Breaking News

We've just been dropped a brief note from Verizon that the original Droid will be getting the full Froyo treatment at some point next week. Considering the brevity of the announcement, it's entirely possible that this was thrown together in response to Sprint's EVO news -- but who cares? The more Android 2.2, the better, right? No official word on other Droid variants -- most of which are likely going to see Froyo updates soon -- but we'll be keeping our ears firmly planted to the ground."

Bah. Been waiting for my order to go through for the phone and new plan. Finally called Verizon and the reason the order hasn't gone through yet is because of something with switching to a smart phone plan or some BS. They told me the order wouldn't go through until the billing cycle starts over which is August 5th even though I talked to them before like July 21st and put the whole thing through online.

Meanwhile the ship date for the X has slipped from August 1st to the 11th while I've been waiting.

Boo. No big deal, I'm just getting impatient

i got a thing in the mail from Verizon today saying i can upgrade early for the promotional discount ($200 after rebate for droid X) for any smartphone

otherwise i can't upgrade until 6/6/11

is this a common thing or does it likely have a bunch of strings attached (new 2 year contract is obvious)

The one thing I can say I preferred about my old 3GS compared to the Evo (apart from better battery life on 3G) was the keyboard. I did try out the Droid X tonight though, and it is a big improvement over the Evo for me. I'm not sure if it's the hardware or the multitouch, but I was making a lot less mistakes. I also really liked the hardware buttons vs the Evo's, on which I'd somehow accidentally hit the search button practically every time I used it landscape mode Of course, the wife prefers the buttons on the Evo--just my luck

I have to agree with you about the Droid's keyboard after trying it out. I'd only ever seen it in pictures, but actually using it today, the keys were way too small for me. I hope the Droid 2's or the Epic's keys are better, since I'd prefer Qwerty.

Otherwise, anyone know how much the Droid X is on a 1-yr contract, or if that's even possible outside of corporate discounts? The store was a zoo today at Southpoint, so I didn't ask. Reason I'm asking is I found a link for a corporate discount purchase and it was $229.99 on a 1-yr contract vs. $199.99 on 2-yr. I like Sprint's yearly upgrade thing, but (if I'm understanding it correctly) it sucks that it takes 6 months to qualify and then another 12 to get the first upgrade, especially since most new devices seem to come out June-August. That would make me eligible for new upgrades every January I think I read in this thread that Verizon does yearly upgrades now with auto-billing or something, but signing up for 1 yr straight away seems the most convenient to me, especially for only a $30 device premium.

It's 269.99 on a 1 yr contract for regular customers. Verizon does annual upgrades on voice plans >49.99 so pretty much any of the plans other than the regular 450 min plan. Only available for the primary line on family plans.

Thanks again. It's a bit of a tough decision. Verizon would be cheaper than Sprint, but for 700 vs 1500 minutes (and no unlimited mobile-to-any-mobile, or unlimited texts--but GV replaced the latter easily), so I'd have to figure out how to use Sipdroid and all that stuff probably.

2 Questions:

1. Do you know if you have to do the 1 year contract in the first place on the primary line ( or both lines??) to be eligible for the yearly upgrade on the primary?

2. Do you have to spend time qualifying for the ability to earn that yearly upgrade like you do with Sprint?

How the hell is Verizon cheaper than Sprint? I think pay 130 out the door for 2 android phones (1 evo) 1500 ATs, insurance on both, and unlimited everything else.

That said, the one touch root applications seem to only offer root. You can't unlock NAND and therefore can't flash custom roms. That correct?

--
Oh I actually misread your post. Basically you were unhappy with the handset and now are willing to chop your plan and give up perks to use a motodroid? I guess Verizon might possibly be cheaper if you're going to give up half your anytime minutes.

^^ no. You can get the annual upgrade with a 2 yr contract. So on a 2 yr contract, you're eligible to upgrade at the 2 yr contract price after 12 months on voice plans >49.99. On a 1 yr contract, you'd be eligible to upgrade after 10 months.

I'm sure they have some sort of qualifying period so you can't just switch to a higher plan, upgrade and then switch back but I haven't seen anything official on that.

^ yeah. The Droid is the only one that it will actually flash a custom recovery on.

tbh, it's the first and only custom rom I've tried so far, but I definitely like it. When I rooted, Cyanogen had not ported anything yet for the Evo and I don't remember what turned me off on DamageControl, but I basically sorted the development thread on XDA by views/replies and went from there. toast's involvement with fresh is what drew me to it. I threw flipz 5 bucks and now i'm on the mailing list and get pretty regular updates. He should have his 2.2 kitchen out pretty soon.

A lot of people in here seem to use CM, so if you have no attachment to Sense, it might be worth it to check that out at some point.

Yeah, I actually didn't use the texts on Sprint. I use GV as my primary # and I like having all the texts saved and searchable on there. Since I mostly use GV (other than with a couple of family & close friends), the mobile-to-any-mobile is less important to me, although the 700 min on Verizon vs. 1500 on Sprint would suck. Then again, it would still be $3 cheaper on Verizon with their 1400 min and 10-free-number thing if I can get the corporate discount.

Sweet, I'm really liking the opportunity to get 2 new phones every 10-12 months just buy paying an extra $60 total.

I think this is my plan then:
1. Wait until Droid 2 comes out. If the keyboard is better than the Droid and I can get the corporate discount, I'll get the Droid 2 for me, Droid X for wife.
2. If the Droid 2 keyboard sucks, then wait for Epic to come out (prob ~Aug 20). If it's keyboard is good, get an Epic for me and Evo for her (if they have any more in stock online for the StudentRate deal--been out for >1 month).
3. If the Epic isn't coming out until Sept or something, I'll just get us 2x Droid X if we can get corp discount and 2X Evo if we can't.

Also, regarding your answer to Grandmaster's question, does that mean you can't flash custom ROMs using SimpleRoot (I guess it's a "3-or-4-touch" root app) for Evo? Or were you talking about one-touch root apps just for Droids?

Quote :

Really? I heard a lot of good things about using Sipdroid with Gizmo5 and GV. I know GV kind of sucked on iPhone, but I only had echoes 1 or 2x in a whole month of using it on Sprint with the Evo. I think it was more AT&T's general suckiness combined with poor reception on iPhone.

Quote :
"Whenever we gets to see something new pop up on FCC, this is normally the sign that something new is coming. This latest filing is no exception; it looks as though Motorola has a new Android device AT&T bound and will be called Sage – so not part of the Droid family.
The new HSDPA smartphone will offer 7.2Mbps and 2Mbps HSUPA, as well as quadband EDGE. All other features come as no surprise, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AGPS and a digital compass. So Motorola are not giving anything away with this latest FCC filing.
It has not been confirmed that the Sage is AT&T bound, but Chris Ziegler from Engadget believes that everything points to them. Ziegler explains that the Backflip is looking a bit old now, so makes sense to offer a replacement.
This is all we know so far, so we seem to have more questions than answer from this latest news. We cannot tell if this will be a full touchscreen handset, or if it will offer a QWERTY keyboard, but we are certain that more details will come to us over the coming days or weeks."

Another article says it WILL have a QWERTY slideout keyboard.

"No Hotspot, No Tethering for Motorola Droid
posted Today, 10:42 AM by Eric M. Zeman
updated Today, 11:17 AM

Verizon Wireless announced on July 30 that the Motorola Droid would receive the Android 2.2 update starting the week of August 2. Android 2.2 natively supports tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot creation. [b]The Motorola Droid, however, will not offer these features. Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney said to Phone Scoop in an email, "The Droid by Motorola doesn't have [the] hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot. With tethering there is no Connection on the PC side that will allow you to tether the device so the answer is that option isn't part of this update." Raney also said the over-the-air update will be pushed to a small set of users first to make sure it works properly. Once that is confirmed to work, Verizon will begin the general roll-out in phases. Android 2.2 offers a wide range of other improvements, including better security, Flash Player Mobile 10.1, voice dialing via Bluetooth, and improved camera performance."
