the Eagles are dangerous as hell. granted, they have had some wtf losses like Minnesota but they still put up 30 points. I think the Dallas and NYG losses were Foles settling in. Not to mention DeSean Jackson will dip out on our CBs and McCoy is going to tough to stop.
I'd rather play GB or SF. Clay Matthews is out and Rodgers, though great, isn't 100% on his game. Lacy won't be as bad as McCoy to contain and GB defense shouldn't be too much of a problem. We've already proved we can beat SF and their offense just doesn't seem as scary as PHI. The key to that game will be getting some damn touchdowns and not just field goals. 1/4/2014 2:45:53 PM |

we should be pulling for GB or Philly

Give me Philly all day.
I think our DL and LBs can shut down McCoy. Great running backs haven't really hurt us this year. QBs who can dissect defenses have (ie: Brady, Brees). Foles has been great this year, but he's not nearly as scary Rodgers and Brees 1/4/2014 3:35:56 PM |

i think we dodged a huge bullet with philly losing, i think they would have beaten us.
I love a matchup with GB. Terrible offensive line and terrible defense. Our d-line will destroy them and our offense can put up a lot of points.
SF will be a war but if we can stifle their offense again and play our ball control offense I think we have a good shot of grinding out a low scoring win. 1/5/2014 1:32:26 PM |

Maybe. If we pressure Kaepernick like we did the first game, I don't think he hurts us.
The defense will be just fine IMO. It's all going to come down to Cam. If he's hitting his targets, we'll be just fine. If not, it could be a long day. 1/5/2014 7:58:40 PM |

I would be surprised if the ticket count isn't 4:1 Niners by Sunday.

^It seemed like the Panthers tried to give the game away several times, yet somehow didn't succumb to NC State shit. That's when I knew something was different about this Panthers team.
We had the two fumbles on our final drive that we miraculously recovered, but the problems started way before that.
Munnerlyn dropped an easy INT that would have prevented the 49ers' first FG. We muffed punt that led to a second 49ers FG. Then Cam threw a terrible INT deep in 49ers territory that gave them the third FG. So Panthers mistakes ultimately led to all 9 of the 49ers points.
Considering that, the defense played out of their minds -- even if Crabtree was out and Davis went down. 1/6/2014 8:22:01 AM |

We are getting absolutely no respect from the national talking heads. It's baffling how unified everyone is in crowning the 49ers. They act like we don't even have a chance.
They're one dropped int, that 7 threw right to the corner, from sitting home this week.

This is definitely the matchup we wanted the least. We could play very well and still lose. It's really all on Cam. We know what the defense can do, 49ers won't score more than 14-20 points tops. Cam has to make more plays than Kaep, simple as that.

explain to me how it's baffling to you? it makes perfect sense to me. SF went the Superbowl last year and is hitting on all cylinders now and most everyone is healthy. Many pick them to win it this year.
The Panthers hadn't been to the playoffs since 08 and that way a totally different team than the one right now. They dont have the recent history. No one thinks they aren't good or are pretenders so they are good spot my opinion . It show and tell for panthers really1/6/2014 3:28:29 PM |

Not to mention that Carolina seemed to get more hype and publicity during that 8 game win streak than SF at that time. For a good chunk of the middle part of the season, people seemed to forget about SF. They weren't playing bad, but SEA had control of the division and they weren't a particularly well talked about story line. "Riverboat Ron" and Carolina got more media attention during that winning streak. Now all eyes seem to be back on SF since their the "hot" team right now/ 1/6/2014 3:48:16 PM |

I'd agree with your #2 point if it was really as simple as that. Crabtree, a healthy Vernon Davis(unless he gets another concussion in the 1st quarter), Aldon Smith now back(was his first game back last time we played and he was rusty), and Kaep actually playing well means their offense is a lot different. I see no way we limit them to another game without a TD.
Last 13 weeks: Panthers 12-1 vs 49ers 11-2. 49ers have 2 losses by a combined 4 points(including @NO). Panthers have 1 loss by 18.
Hard to argue that over the last month that overall Kaep has been playing better than Cam, and Steve Smith is coming off an injury. Vegas has us as 1-point underdogs at home.
Pretty easy to see why most "talking heads" have us losing this one. Our last time as the #2 seed we also lost in our first game to Arizona in a blowout. Going to take more than 1 really good year to change most analysts opinions of our team/franchise.
Hopefully it'll just be more motivation for our players to go out there and win and earn even more respect. 1/6/2014 3:52:03 PM |

Panthers bottled up Vernon Davis pretty good in that first meeting. He got knocked out halfway through the second quarter so he had his chances to make an impact. I think he finished with 1 catch for 2 yards, though he got robbed of another catch by the refs who ruled his clear catch/fumble an incomplete catch .
I think we are going to stomp ass
Last time we played them, in San Francisco as 6.5 pt underdogs, Kaepernick had 91 yds passing and he got sacked 6 times with his mobility only adding 16 rushing yards. He hasn't been able to get it done against the best Ds in the league, so I don't know why some are saying that he is going to be some huge difference maker against the #2 defense in the NFL. Will Crabtree really be that huge of a difference-maker?
Against elite(Top 5) NFL defenses Kaepernick is 1-3 this year with the following per-game stats:
Passing yds: 130 Completion %: 50.9 Rushing yds: 39.5 QB Rating: 50.6
3:6 TD:TO ratio
As a team, SF has managed a total of 3 TDs in these 4 matchups against elite defenses(SEA, SEA, CAR, NO).
I'll concede that the 49ers remind me a lot of the Panthers. We both rely on our defense and the offenses have just been good enough to win almost all of our games. The only clear advantage I see here for SF is that they went to the super bowl last year and the Panthers are the new kids on the block. That said, we are at home and we are certainly not looking ahead.
We are home underdogs with our emotional leader coming back for this game. Smith probably understands that this will probably be his best chance to get back to the big game so I don't see us coming out flat. To me, this game does not compare to the 2009 Cardinals blowout loss.
Panthers are going to take this game 27-17. Its going to be close in the first half but I think the Panthers turn some of those red zone FGs into touchdowns and eventually pull away. 1/6/2014 5:35:03 PM |
