Good post. I'd be curious to see Cam's numbers against these elite defenses. (too lazy to do it myself though)1/6/2014 6:40:53 PM |

They aren't a lot different. Cam has the edge on Kaepernick though
4 games against the top 5(NO, @NO, Sea, @SF):
Cam:
Passing yds: 159 Completion %: 60.4 Rushing yds: 26.8 QB Rating: 79.3
3:2 TD:TO
Record: 2-2
Ball protection is going to be the key here. To have only 2 turnovers in 4 games against that competition is pretty darn good and kind of shows how Cam has started to really mature and be comfortable. 1/6/2014 7:48:47 PM |

Will be interesting to see which defense can get the most pressure on the QB as well. On paper this should shape up to be a defense driven game and whichever team can get the most pressure on the QB will probably win.
Against the same top 5 defenses, Cam was sacked 13 times vs. Kaepernick's 14. In the last matchup the Panthers got to him 6 times vs. Cam getting sacked 3 times.
Sorry, stats are interesting to me. I used to search all my old baseball cards for errors when I was a nerdy little kid. 1/6/2014 8:03:07 PM |

I think having Crabtree makes a very big difference for the 49ers. I think the Panthers still pull it out 23-20, but that score relies on my belief that Ted Ginn returns a punt for a TD. 1/6/2014 9:09:56 PM |

San Fran's offense is so good they put up 23 points on the 25th ranked Packers defense without their best player
this game is gonna be about as nerve-racking as the November 10th game against them. 1/6/2014 9:18:06 PM |

Quote : | "Munnerlyn dropped an easy INT that would have prevented the 49ers' first FG. We muffed punt that led to a second 49ers FG. Then Cam threw a terrible INT deep in 49ers territory that gave them the third FG. So Panthers mistakes ultimately led to all 9 of the 49ers points." |
very true on all counts...the INT should've been caught, but ok, it was just an incomplete pass...the muffed punt was also partially blocked...and upon rewatching, if the blocker was more aggressive, it could've been "really blocked" and not just partially deflected...Cam's pick was kind of a throw away that didn't get out of bounds...but on all 3 counts, we gave them the field position that led to all their points...on their home field
but they do have Crabtree now, who is pretty baller...I wonder if Vernon will be at all scared to get knocked out again...I doubt it...he could easily catch 2 TDs this weekend...but we're a better team too...and Smitty and Lafell had some big drops that could've helped us as well
the Week 10 game between these 2 teams was a classic gut-wrenching defensive battle, but when SF fans want to act like "the Panthers took it more seriously" and stuff, it's just a dumb perspective
we need to hit Kaepernick early (and often)....he struggles when he's scared and complaining about getting tackled...their whole team complains too much...and I don't mean a WR asks for a flag on a close play...I mean Harbaugh was whining all game, like the "double facemask" where Klein wasn't even near Kaepernick's facemask...he's just a bitch...wishes he had the NFL success of John Harbaugh, even prior to last year's Super Bowl

I heard/read a salient point yesterday that Kaepernick really doesnt like contact and starts acting like a little bitch if you hit him. I remember this from our first meeting, as well as in GB, when he got all pissy after being taken down by his jersey.
That being said, we need to get some hits on this guy early and often. I want him off his game because he is steaming about our front four planting him in a few times. Could lead to bad decisions on his part. 1/7/2014 9:57:17 AM |

I found it somewhere online, looks like he went with a 3-4 D, and yes, Star is the DT, Richardson made it at DE.
Glennon also made it at QB, haha. 1/8/2014 8:17:57 AM |

No clue where noob is getting his info from, but the last Heisman winning QB not named Tebow to win a playoff game in the NFL was Andre Ware. There have been 16 Heisman winning QBs since Ware got his (14 if you don't count Manziel & Winston since they haven't played in the NFL yet)
Over that same period of time, 7 Heisman winners weren't QBs. 6 of those 7 were on a team that won a playoff game (Rashaan Salaam is the lone exception) 1/8/2014 9:43:25 PM |

Well for a while there the QBs who won the Heisman each year were just average to above-average QBs on great teams. Did anyone really think Leinart, Jason White, Troy Smith, or Chris Weinke were actually going to be good pros? Sam Bradford basically fits this too, but think a good part of his floundering NFL career is injuries and the fact that he has to make the playoffs coming out of that division. 1/9/2014 8:58:46 AM |

I'm still pissed that Jason White won the Heisman while Phil didn't even get invited.
That award is a farce anyway. It has nothing to do with who the best player in America actually is. The descriptor should say it's the best QB/RB on a team contending for a championship. 1/9/2014 9:07:29 AM |

SF didnt have Crabtree last time we played them, right? Watching SF since he came back - they have a much better spread in the passing game... thats about the only wrinkle that scares me a bit 1/9/2014 9:42:22 AM |

San Fran fans act like they are the only team that experiences injuries to good players
Crabtree didn't play in the game 2 months ago and we knocked Vernon Davis out in the 2nd quarter
Flash forward to the Saints game in Charlotte. Stewart didn't play and Smith got knocked out in the 2nd quarter
and we won the game 1/9/2014 10:13:30 AM |

Yeah all the "talking heads" have been talking about is how the 49ers are "finally getting healthy" with Davis playing, Crabtree, and apparently a couple of their starting OL, including one of their best, were out for the game against us.
Not sure if that's even true, just what I've heard the analysts pointing out as the key differences between this game and the first one. 1/9/2014 2:33:03 PM |

I hope the boys have a big chip on their shoulders come Sunday. I can't believe how little of a chance most of the talking heads seem to be giving us. We must concede how dramatic of a difference the return of Crabtree has been to their offense, that really is a big impact. But we also beat them in SF, and most of the "analysis" of the past game doesn't seem to acknowledge the difficulty of winning on the road, regardless of injuries. 1/9/2014 2:51:49 PM |

teams are basically equal and we're at home. We have a significantly better defense this season. They have only a slightly better offense, but with the return of Crabtree and the loss of Steve Smith (or less than 100% anyway) they are a bit better and us worse than the numbers suggest. They have a much better special teams so we'll see if that comes into play.

I know... I am hoping our offense suddenly plays much better than vs. NO and @ Atl. Worried about Smitty - but then I read this:
Quote : | "Smith has not caught more than six passes or recorded more than 69 receiving yards in a game in 2013" |
Maybe our fanbase overrates his presence a bit? Especially if Cam & team have had two weeks of practice/prep knowing he would be questionable for this game...
He is just so damn entertaining, its just not the same Panthers playoff experience without seeing him in there. Kindof like ProBoxing without Mike Tyson.

Panthers can move the ball as long Cam is on target and the receivers actually catch. They had a bunch of dropped passes in that first game that would have extended drives. The offense isn't that bad, rated pretty highly in DVOA. Lacks the volume stats due to play style and coaching to the defense. Cam is a gamer though, he'll perform well tomorrow. 1/11/2014 10:35:43 AM |
