i think the only time i'd feel safe hunting public gamelands is if i were bow hunting. Even then i'd still wear blaze orange

I basically quit hunting, but I used to hunt gamelands.

I never ever went without a sidearm and spare mags. With all the stories you hear you never know what kind of lunatic you'll run into. If someone shot at me they'd have a bunch of lead flung their way.
I always made sure someone knew exactly where I was too and when I should be back.

I paid $580 for my G23C, so $519 is a great price. It is usually an $80 option over the base model cost. It is hard to find any used Glocks, especially for a decent price.
I'm seeing most go for around $450, and for that you might as well just buy a new one.

I was able to fire a Colt New Army Model in .44 caliber. and it was freakin sweet. No recoil.

Percussion cap pistols are interesting.

I would never own one, but it was a great opportunity.

I took my 30-06 out to the Wake County Firearm Education and Training Center last night.

This place is NICE. They have a 100yard indoor range. Wanted to make sure my scope was on before I go hunting this saturday.

Anyone else go out there?

Yeah, I've taken my rifles out there to shoot several times. It's a nice facility if you don't want to shoot beyond 100 meters. The benches are nice and solid but I wish on the shorter ranges that they had a target recall system instead of just having to wait around for everyone to get done. But hey, it's cheap and they guys who work out there are pretty nice.

Yeah, shotguns are good...except no birdshot or buckshot. (They prefer slugs)

The guys are pretty cool though...if it's turkey season and you wanna pattern your turkey loads...they'll probably let you shoot a few times.

To become a member, it's $15 if you live in wake county and $25 outside. You have to take a 2 hour class/range orientation class. It's really not bad at all.

I'm pretty sure it's lifetime....

However, it's $10/hour to use the range once you're a member.

I think they do have a yearly rate that you can pay and then not worry about paying each time you go. I don't remember exactly how much it is. I would guess something like $200.

anybody been to personal defense lately to shoot on saturday? has it been crowded? I was planning on heading down to the rifle range tomorrow but it looks like the weather is gonna be pretty crappy so I was thinking I might hit up PDHSC.

^^ If you're willing to make the drive (and if it still open) Range 1 south of Lillington is the best place around here to shoot IMO. Personally, I hate square ranges and I hate indoor ranges. Neither are realistic and the necessary safety restrictions prevent any real training.

It is a bit of a drive but well worth it IMO. I'm lucky enough here in Alabama to have a range which charges $175 for the whole year with unlimited access to the property 24/7 and unlimited shooting from 8AM to sundown.

I tend to dig for internet deals, right now http://www.opticsplanet.com/ has the Fobus 6909RP, the universal dual mag pouch for 9mm/40 double stack, WITH the roto attachment to the paddle, so adjustable angle/attachment method, down cheaper than the NON roto models. Its ~$9 off of the 'normal' price. They have a lot of the fobus stuff on sale right now, as part of the holiday sales.

^^^ Its been bought out and is now under new management. It is now called Range 34. The owner is a pretty nice dude. He did have his FFL a month or so ago when I went, he was waiting on it still, but the range was open. I will see if I can dig up his card tomorrow and can give you a little more info then

Good deal, the old owner was pretty good too. I don't need the info, I won't be there any time soon but some folks on here might find it worthwhile. If he runs it like the old guy then it should be a pretty solid operation. Once he watched you run through a few dry fire drills on the bay he gave you pretty much carte blanche to train as you pleased as long as you didn't do dumb shit and didn't shoot his steel with rifle rounds.

Junk? I like mine, but then I carry in a standard model, with paddle, no thumb straps, push buttons or other 'extra' retention methods to get in the way. And at less than 1/2 the cost of most of the similar plastic holsters, I don't see why NOT to buy fobus.

Took my new 700 PSS out today to zero, she put a 3-shot group in the size of a nickel at 100 yards with Remington Core-Lokt express. When I get better ammo I'll run it out to about 600 yards. This thing is tits.

Sighted in my new Leupold VX-1 last night on my Remington 710 30-06. Didnt have time to fine tune it, but I got a 3 shot group in the size of a 50cent piece with 180g Core Lokt Express ammo at 100yards. Basically was happy with just getting it on the paper last night. I only had about 45 minutes to shoot.

I'll be fine tuning with my hunting ammo...Winchester Ballistic Silver tips...168g.

So I have finally decided that with some Christmas money I am going to put some glass on my AR-10 so I can shoot it for once. Problem is I am clueless on them, anyone know of a good scopes for dummies type deal to explain the differences?

I really just want to do some deer hunting with it and maybe try to shoot up to 500 yards but mainly for deer. I don't want to cheap out but I don't want to drop a lot of cash either because I am not exactly rolling in dough (as you can tell since it has taken over a year to buy some glass for my rifle)

I bought a Leupold Mark 2 4-12x40mm for my SR-25 pattern .308 AR. I like it a lot. For the money, it's great. Clear, easy to adjust, solid construction. 1/2 MOA adjustments keep it simple. I wish it had an illuminated reticle option but I really don't need it. It might be useful to you for hunting.

I've shot out to 500 yards with it and the 12x mag makes it pretty easy going. They sell for high $500s to low $600s. Wait and see what's on ebay after x-mas and maybe you can catch a good deal.

I just bought a Leupold VX-1 for ~$250. I got the Long Range version...has two dots for drop compensation. I think it's a great scope for the price.

The slide on my p226 9mm is failing to stay open after firing the last round....

What could be causing this? Think if I clean it it'll help it out? It's probably a bit dirty.

.44mag Desert Eagle is a fucking beast. I couldn't shoot it worth shit (too heavy; grip to large) but it's a fun one and an attention getter.

Quote :
"my understanding on that gun is that if you plan on shooting any good amount of ammo, go ahead and wear gloves when firing it, because it puts a hurting on your hands"

didn't tear my hands up at all. and it doesn't kick too bad at all - you can tell it's a powerful firearm with a powerful kick, but it's not violent at all (much less violent compared to my .380 and .40 because of the weight).

and I think I got a good laugh out of daryl when I was shooting it.

I was decent with the Desert Eagle .44mag. All my holes were touching each other. It is a huge gun, thats for damn sure. It was surprisingly gente I thought. There was a bit of kick, but it was totally manageable.

I also was able to sight in my new holographic sight on my Glock Carbine Conversion. 33 rounds of 9mm all touching at 23 yards is fun.

Probably the magazine. You should already have your magazines numbered so you can determine if one is consistently giving you trouble. If it is, replace it. Additionally, I like replacing all my factory magazine springs (and recoil springs) with Wolff gunsprings. FWIW.

I need TWW's collective advice.

I want to get into shooting--it was never something my family was into, but I think gun culture as itself has enough room to be a total nerd over it that it wouldn't be far beyond my interests--and I was ALMOST into it when I was younger (but instead did Paintball and Airsoft and things of those natures).

So, TWW, I need an idea where to start my journey.

Well, I thought it was the magazine too, but I've got 3 mags and they ALL do it now.

One is basically brand new (off-brand)...and 2 Sig mags.

Browse a few pawn shops this weekend and pick up a used $80 - $150 .22 rifle. As far as inexpensive .22s go, the best of the lot is probably a Marlin Model 60. I've owned probably 6 or 7 of these things over the years and still have a couple of them. I've never had one that wasn't both accurate and reliable. Don't laugh at the suggestion of a .22, many of us on here who own and shoot just about everything still shoot tremendous volumes of .22 because of the low noise, cost and recoil and excellent fun factor.
Go to Wal-Mart and pick up a couple 550-round bricks of .22 ammo, find a place to shoot and let the fun begin. If you've never fired a gun before and are a true "first timer", then I'd suggest a good course of instruction on safe gun handling, or at least seeking some instruction from a friend or acquaintance who has a lot of experience.

If you enjoy this first inexpensive step into shooting, it will quickly grow into an expensive, time consuming, and extremely rewarding hobby.
