Roster released for Aug 10 friend vs Mexico.

http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-National-Team/2011/08/Klinsmann-Calls-In-22-Players-to-Face-Mexico-on-Aug-10-in-Philadelphia.aspx

"GOALKEEPERS (2): Bill Hamid (D.C.United), Tim Howard (Everton)

DEFENDERS (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Etienne), Edgar Castillo (Club America), Timmy Chandler (FC Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Heath Pearce (Chivas USA), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), José Torres (Pachuca)

FORWARDS (5): Freddy Adu (Benfica), Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Edson Buddle (FC Ingolstadt), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy) "

No Dempsey, Holden, Jozy, Gooch, Spector, or Hahnemann. Holden is in training but probably still not match fit yet. Looks like Fulham wants Dempsey in London to train. Spector is without a club for the moment last I checked (relesaed from WHU after relegation). Jozy just swapped clubs, probably tied up in training too. Hahnemann also without a club (and getting old).

http://soccerreform.us/blog/

So, I stumbled upon this. I'm sure it's previously been posted, but here it is nonetheless. This guy pretty much goes out of his way to show that the slow growth model of the MLS is stunting the growth of US soccer, and he even has a few entries about how relegation/promotion could be implemented in the MLS (http://soccerreform.us/blog/?cat=4). It's also got some pretty scathing articles about Sunil Gulati (he claims that the US lost the World Cup bid because we refuse to promote relegation/promotion and because the MLS plays on international FIFA dates -- well, that and bribery). A pretty interesting blog read if you're interested.

And why does Ricardo Clark keep getting called up?

Chandler is the kid from Germany right? I'm actually interested to see him get some real action. Lets face it, the back four has been flat awful... couldn't hurt.

Same thought here. Why wouldn't he call him up since he is the best player ever?

That guy is a lunatic (soccerreform dude) - he thinks everything is some massive conspiracy designed to keep US Soccer down. He has some decent ideas about pro/rel but kills it with all his tinfoil bullshit

^^ Orozco played in the Olympics, got a 3rd minute red card in our final game against Nigeria and hasn't really been a factor since. I don't know much about him either, to be honest.

Yeah, he's in the deep end, but I think he brings up some interesting points. One being that there were more US players playing in Europe in the mid '90s than today (I'm guessing he's telling the truth here, I can't verify that). Or that viewership of the EPL, Champions League, International Friendlies and tournaments have all skyrocketed, but yet the MLS has been stagnant (how many of us here regularly/passionately follow the MLS -- I know I don't). The main point I got from some of the entries I've read is that the MLS is too afraid to keep up with the growing popularity of the sport (concerning promotion/relegation, insistence on the NCAA/draft model, and independent club ownership), and the men's national team is struggling (or rather, not improving) as a result, which I think is a pretty fair assessment, or at the very least, worthy of discussion.

Red Bull Arena is directly out the window of my office. I have yet to go to a game. I want to, but still, there is clearly no urgency.

That is because tv has began to show more of the games from the top leagues around the World while MLS still doesn't have any major contract. Yeah I know, they get 1 game a week on ESPN2 and FSC. That isn't much. If you want to watch anymore then you have to buy some sort of PPV pack. Also, the talent level isn't as high and people want to watch the best leagues in the World. No one in America seems overly excited about club soccer in Australia, Scotland, Egypt, Argentina, etc either.

As for the fearing to keep up, I don't buy that. They added the DP rule and teams can now have 3 DPs. There is only so much they can do because no matter what they do, people are still going to watch the Big 4 in Europe over all other leagues in the world. The NASL used the European system of start clubs wherever you want and spend as much as you want. Then the league went bankrupt. The NASL is a great example of how to not run a soccer league in the USA.

"When then lineups are posted later this evening, fans will notice a distinct pattern to the jersey numbers. Going back to an historical tradition, Jurgen Klinsmann will assign the numbers 1-11 to the starters each game, and 12-18 for the reserves.

Numbers will be only thing printed on the jersey, which means no names on the back. One of the main goals is to make sure that everyone is focused on the most important thing on the uniform - the crest representing the United States."

It's good to hear that we're calling up young guys and getting them caps in friendlies. We need to be planning for the 2014 WC right now and there is going to be a fair amount of turnover.

watch any other American sport and this is a joke if you think this represents the highest level of American athlete. We have two players that belong on this stage. We basically need some sort of title 6 type of thing to get high school and college soccer going nationwide for men like it is for women.

Halftime thoughts:

Castillo is Bornstein 2.0
Jones looks like he doesn't give a fuck
Orozco doesn't look that bad
Buddle is Buddle
Beckerman is Beckerman

You think its fine that major colleges and universities don't have soccer programs?

Pretty much no acess to mens soccer in the south where most of the athletes come from

Stop it with your fucking stupid posts in these threads about comparing the USMNT to other sports. Just stop...

* Jones was non-existent; Holden is going to put him on the bench
* I barely even noticed Landon was out there
* Castillo looked... awful.
* I didn't hate what Beckerman did and thought Orozco Fiscal was decent

We've gotta play to our stregths and I like the new coach BTW. Holding the ball is our best shot. Control possession and limit the other teams shots. We are getting blasted in this game and only down 1 because of it.

[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 10:15 PM. Reason : yeah its tough when you are down but if you make the other team overplay 1 striker is fine]
