Mack Brown wasn't good at the end of his Texas tenure. Expecting a 67 year old coach to resurrect a program that's in the gutter is unrealistic. Especially considering that he won't be able to just have his pick of recruits like he did at Texas (and he was bad at that there.). Hiring him will get the old fogies to open their wallets back up, but it won't be good for their football program in the long run.

Here’s my hot Mack Brown take.

He won’t be a disaster. It’s not really that hard to win between 5 and 7 games/year at UNC. Especially in the Coastal. It’s a very low floor/low ceiling type hire. It just amazes me that UNC felt so desperate that they are satisfied with such a low risk hire instead of rolling the dice on a Satterfield or Littrell - those guys would probably have similarly low floors (because again, merely making a bowl isn’t that hard) with higher ceilings and obviously much more staying power longterm. So UNC is basically just punting on this hire and saying “ehh we’ll figure it out in 6-7 years when Mack retires”. And that doesn’t make a ton of sense to me because UNC, to me, isn’t in a deep hole. They werent that far from being a 5 or 6 win team this year. They mostly need a QB and that new guy on Saturday looked like he has potential. Yes our secondary makes a lotta QBs look good, but after a shaky start he was accurate. They dropped a lotta well thrown balls on Saturday. They lost 5 games this year by 1 possession, 2 in OT. And another 2 losses by just 10 points. That doesn’t strike me as a team that has a long rebuild ahead and it shouldn’t be a totally unattractive job to somebody like Satterfield or Littrell. They were undisciplined, couldn’t finish, and had no QB. That’s a recipe for a bad season. But it’s also not a recipe for something that necessarily requires a long term rebuild. That’s why the Brown hire just doesn’t make sense to me. Best case for UNC is in about 6 years they are 8-4 ranked in the top 25 and Brown is stepping down to hand the job off to a groomed coordinator I guess? And that all sounds great. But that’s the best case, imo. Worst case is in 6 years they’re hovering around bowl eligibility because Brown isn’t bringing in much talent and other schools around the area already have a leg up on UNC (State, Duke, App, even Wake are all stable programs and better than they were in the 90s when Brown was so successful). At which point UNC will be starting all over again with a new coach and the program not significantly more stable than it is now.

And people say that Brown is gonna come cheap. Sure that’s probably true. But then they’re talking about Chizik and Kingsbury as coordinators and those guys won’t be cheap. So it doesn’t make sense that money is the real issue here.
