Ecu is modernizing their logo to catch up to modern times. The old paste is getting replaced by a somali pirate.

I like how there were about 20 posts telling us to MAN UP or GET SOME BALLS in response to the stop playing ECU posts. Not a single logical, thought out reason to continue playing them.
You guys can compete for some mythical fan championship where acting tough counts all you want. I don't care about that. We can get called out for being bitches or acting like UNC. Doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is putting our sports programs in the best positions to succeed. This is no different than manipulating the RPI in basketball (which we don't do either, I'm sure we're going to play a bunch of 300+ RPI teams again this year that actually hurt us when we win). 10/17/2010 5:10:19 PM |

This game is good for college football in the area. I was at both games and it was an electric atmosphere at ECU yesterday and it was great at State in 2008. Most of the games are competitive and fun to be a part of (last 2 have gone to OT). The regional rivalries make college football distinct from the NFL and why it's a great sport. Pulling the "we shouldn't schedule them" card screams of sour grapes. No, maybe it doesn't help State's national profile, but neither do home games against Murray State or Gardner-Webb a la 2009. You can't schedule top 25 teams every game, nor would you want to.

^^ so let me see if I follow you - rather than play ECU, we should schedule a program of similar stature as ECU that doesn't happen to view us as a rival (and thus maybe wouldn't be as excited/motivated for the game)...??? that's asinine. really. i'm pretty sure no one associated with the football program would agree with your logic, because they likely have testosterone and don't want to be a bunch of nancies scared to play a program like ECU.
Oh, and since someone said that no one has given reasons TO play ECU, here are mine 1) they're an in-state D1 team, so natural fit to play us, 2) high level of interaction between the schools' alumni bases, creating excitement for the game and thus better TV ratings and ticket sales, and 3) we should beat them most years. But even if 3 weren't the case, I'd still be up for playing them. Not necessarily every single year, but regularly. I'm much more interested in buying tickets to see us vs. ECU than us vs. UCF, So. Fla, etc.

I would rather play ECU than UCF. I don't think we should play them every single year...but with 4 OOC games each season, I don't see why we can't play them every once in a while.
I would be much more interested in a NCSU/ECU on the schedule than if we played, say, Tulsa or some other C-USA opponent.

prb185: Ok, you don't get this from an NC State fan's perspective.
Playing ECU is only good for ECU, because it raises the Pirates' profile in the rest of the state. It does nothing for NC State's profile, win or lose. Playing an equivalent team to ECU in another part of the country gives NCSU better recruiting opportunities and more attempts to expand fanbase interest, whereas travelling to Greenville does nothing for recruiting or the fanbase.
Playing Murray State and Gardner-Webb actually do provide something for NCSU, they provide a tune-up and home-game revenue. Certainly there's no reason to play them in Week 7, but that's why we play them in Weeks 1 or 2.
There is no positive for NCSU to ever play against ECU. Now, there is upside for ECU, as it gives their fanbase something to get more excited about outside of their normal C-USA rivalries. It also raises ECU's in-state recruiting profile every time ECU beats NCSU.
At best, it's a one-sided "rivalry" and in reality it's being forced to play with your much younger brother on his terms in front of all your friends so they can mock you later. 10/17/2010 7:32:43 PM |
spooner All American 1860 Posts user info edit post |
^ I'm an NC State fan, that is absolutely NOT my perspective. Oh well, we can all agree to disagree on this one. Some alums view ECU is a "little brother" that we shouldn't associate with, others of us see them as a fellow public NC university that it's ok to compete against in sports on a regular basis.
Oh, and the argument for playing teams like UCF or other C-USA schools rather than ECU because they'll expand our "exposure and recruiting base" - that's a bit of a stretch. If anything, it makes more sense to play ECU because the travel is MUCH cheaper than any other potential OOC road games.

It's not about being above scheduling them. In fact it's quite the opposite. We're TOO CLOSE to them. The series record is now 16-11 us and I think it's even worse recently. I hear all this stuff about how we should just beat them every time and that's great but the fact is we aren't that good. VT has not played them in Greenville from what I remember. I don't know about WV, but I do know that VT lost the one game played in Charlotte and won the two they played in Blacksburg. The relationship between those programs and ECU isn't the same as ours and ECU's btw.
Quote : | "This game is good for college football in the area. I was at both games and it was an electric atmosphere at ECU yesterday and it was great at State in 2008. Fair enough, and this is the best "keep the series" post I've seen yet. My response is that we could replace the regional rivalry with another that would benefit us more, such as South Carolina. Those games were intense (even if they were a bit poor due to being the first game of the year), the fanbases are equally passionate, SoCar being in the ACC in the past and their departure from it still has a lot of hurt feeling on both sides and...oh yea, both games were on ESPN

I don't have a huge problem with playing them every once in a while. Maybe 2 or 3 times a decade like we would any other team in the area. I just don't think having it as a regular series which has festered into a rivalry of any sort benefits us. UCF/USF aren't really great games either, especially if we have to play home and homes with them. But I can at least see the argument if we're trying to get on TV in the area of places we recruit, i.e. I like the Cincinnati game because TOB tries to get players from there. UCF/USF might've made more sense with Chuck

I don't mind playing ECU every once in a while...I don't want to play them every year, just because I think there are other opportunities out there and we shouldn't be tied down with one OOC opponent that stays the same every year. 10/17/2010 8:32:06 PM |

that would be Clemson..... and even if that wasn't the case, it would make more sense that UNC was their rival (at least during football season) w/ the whole "who is the real Carolina" thing goin on.
the ECU/NCSU rivalry isn't exactly Michigan/Ohio State or Florida/FSU.... hell it aint even Washington/Washington St. We fight over a fucking barrel that nobody outside of this state has heard of. My point is our football rivalry is small potatoes as far as national relevance but it works for us. players get up for it.... puts butts in the stands...creates excitement in the state. I'm sure most of you have a buddy or co-worker that went to school at ECU... i think it's great for in-state recruiting too. Why discontinue the series? So you can play Gardner Webb or Middle Tennessee? That won't move your program in the right direction. I like that you guys went to Ohio State but guess what?....they don't want you back now. They scheduled future dates with the likes of Tennessee, Va Tech, & Oklahoma. again, no problem playing you guys every now and then. It just doesnt do it for me nearly every year and really doesn't do it for our program. I actually dont know that many people from ECU. I dont mind us playing ECU as long as its like once every 3 or 4 years.
Back in 2008 when ECU was ranked 15th in all the polls I was looking forward to seeing them come to Carter Finley so we could bring them back down to earth and we did.
they got us back this past wknd, and now I dont want to see them for another 3 or 4 years, however while at the Sports-bar watching the game, half the place was in Purple/gold and the otehr half of the sports bar was in Red/white9and this bar was located in Chapel hill), and the way all of us were acting b4, during and after the game, it sure as hell has developed into a rivalry, no matter what anyone says!
Now I was looking at our schedule for 2011, and we have like South Alabama...and Liberty on are god-damn schedule...REALLY.....REALLY???? id take ECU back on our schedule any God-damn day of the week before these two shit schools!!?? how so? any recruit that would come to NCSU based on whether or not we beat ECU is functionally retarded and probably won't make it past his first year anyway. we've already got the upper hand on them recruiting.
and VT and WVs games with ECU aren't a valid comparison. neither of those schools receive the exposure in north carolina we do. you want a valid comparison, see how eager the hokies are to go play james madison in their house, or WV is to go to marshall.
i just went and looked this shit up... michigan and michigan state combined have played central, east, and west michigan 35 times compared to the 27 we've played against 1 school. the mountaineers that were mentioned told the thundering herd to go to hell if they thought they were going to get a home and home out of them. the only reason there's a series now is because of political pressure from the governor. ohio state? two against akron, six against cincy, three against miami (oh), and two against toledo. some kind of bullshit rolling invite that sees one of the teams a year come to the horseshoe. florida (lol). and the day VT plays at JMU is the day i'll be back on board for playing ecu much less visiting it.10/18/2010 1:32:32 AM |
