I believe this season is very critical to our future success in the ACC and nationally. If we are able to hang a championship banner that will legitimize our program as an elite one that can hang with the blues. Maybe we turn that success into getting Randle, keep Purvis one more year, and hang another banner. Let us face reality, with Pitt, Cuse, and ND coming in the ACC isn't going to get any easier. I'm not really scared of ND, we can hang with Pitt with the way we are recruiting now (probably would split home & away games), but Cuse scares me because they are almost on the blues' level, especially considering Boeheim will likely get the same preferential treatment as Roy & K. 10/17/2012 10:29:53 PM |

I also think he'll get a few more open shots this year with Leslie and Brown improving their offense and Purvis/Warren drawing more attention. When Painter/CJW/Johnson were in the game last year, we had 2 or 3 guys that didn't draw defenders attention.10/18/2012 1:11:49 PM |

Wood needs to shoot more corner 3's. Its the same distance all the way around in college, but 1'9" shorter in the pros, which may not sound significant, but is. Being a Novak/Kapono type is his only real shot of making it in the NBA, so it would be in his best interest to start getting more familiar with that angle. 10/18/2012 2:00:56 PM |

I just really want to see Wood step up in a big game this year. We all know his struggles against UNC and Duke, mostly because of the tight perimeter D they play, but he had a great opportunity to break open Kansas's zone last year in the Sweet Sixteen and he shot like shit. So did the rest of the team, but that's in the past.
Wood is a senior now, and a 4-year starter. No game should be too big for him. He needs to light it up against UNC at least once in his career. 10/18/2012 2:12:06 PM |

While those two are established starters, Warren provides a level of depth that we didn't have last season. His size at 6'8" and scoring ability will be too valuable to not take advantage of. I think we'll definitely see more of Warren than people think we will, especially when Wood is cold and Leslie is in foul trouble. 10/18/2012 3:18:33 PM |

TDT does look much improved. However, he needs to play the way he did in those videos/PTWTP in a real game to prove anything. His only issue last year was that he looked like he rushed everything he was doing. If he has truly slowed himself down and the game has come to him, then yes, I truly believe he can be a contributor over the next 3 years and possibly a starter in his junior/senior season. 10/18/2012 4:06:29 PM |

God, I'm still very optimistic for the season but our expectations are really out of control nationally.
Let's look at this objectively. We weren't a very good team last season until the very last few weeks of the season.
Realistically, our best two accomplishments were close losses to Kansas and UNC who were very, very good teams and clearly amongst the best in the country. That shows that at our peak we could play with anyone, but those were still losses.
Next, I'd put our win over Georgetown as an obvious third. Georgetown was a top team last year, but they played really poorly against us and had some early foul problems. It was still without a doubt a great win, but it's not that we really went toe to toe with them and took them out as much as it was they had a really off game that day. I don't think we played nearly as well in the win over Georgetown as we did in the losses to KU and UNC.
Next, I'd probably put our victory over Miami where we really played well and gathering a sweep over a good UM team was a nice resume builder for us.
Our win over UVA was memorable because of the stakes at hand, but they were playing terribly over the last month or so of the season. SDSU wasn't really NCAA-t type competition so they were a lucky draw for us.
Okay, so we're returning a lot of guys so obviously we can expect to improve but let's look a little closer.
1) Scott Wood and Richard Howell are an excellent 3 point shooter and rebounder, respectively. They're already an A+ in this category so we can't realistically expect much improvement in this area. Other than that they are somewhat one dimensional and are seniors so I don't think it's realistic to expect monumental improvement elsewhere except perhaps Howell's conditioning.
2) ZoBoJo's and CJello must improve monumentally to justify our National Contender status. Some improvement is to be expected of course since Zoboloft has had a full year to run the point and seemed to really come into his own at the end of the season as he gained confidence. C-Jaylo should have continued to improve his strength, athleticism, and shooting touch which will obviously be huge. The real concern with these guys though is what happens if the team underachieves early? They've been through some adversity in their careers already. Will they come together or will they start looking out for their own draft stock or fold under the pressure? It's easy to forget that sometimes players REGRESS rather than improve. I expect them to improve, but it's not exactly a tiny step they are expected to take if we're going to be national contenders.
3) Will Purvis as a freshman be better than CJoWo was as a senior? Tough call. CJoWo was still a double figure scorer and was a solid rebounder/defender. Even highly rated freshmen sometimes struggle to adapt to the college game, though SG is one of the easier spots to contribute from right away.
4) Our bench. Does Vandy adequately replace Painter? Will Lewis and Warren add a lift or will they be just marginal rotation players? Will TDT add anything?
5) Offensively there is obviously a ton of talent and we'll probably be near the top of the country. Defensively, we still have to prove that we can compete at a high level. We did it for a few games at the end of last season, but we'll need to see if with all this hype we still put in the work on the defensive end or if we just expect our talent to carry us without it.
There are a lot of question marks on this team. I think we're definitely a legit top 25 team assuming modest improvements, but it's quite a leap to go from being a top ~60 team last year to a top 5 team this year like some people seem to expect.
I just hope people don't forget to be excited if we're closer to a top 25 team than a top 5 one.
Credit to Sidney Lowe for putting together a great roster and hopefully credit to Gottfried for getting these guys to play great this year. 10/18/2012 5:51:52 PM |

But I do agree with a lot of face's post. There's plenty of question marks this season...and the answers to those questions will be the difference in us being a top 20 team or a top 5 team. I'm just excited to even be having this type of conversation.10/18/2012 6:09:15 PM |

Wow, Spain really hates perimeter defense.
A lot of our early season troubles last year, as I remember it, stemmed from Brown still being shaky at PG and having trouble closing out games and CJ Leslie sitting out the end of half our games with cramps. Brown's more confident, Leslie seems to have cured what was ailing him, Wood supposedly learned some new offensive tricks in the offseason, and we can just hope to god Howell won't foul so much. Purvis is probably an upgrade over late-season Williams, and if nothing else should give Wood some more open looks if he can drive as well as everybody says. It'll suck not having Painter most of the time, but maybe Vandy won't brick 5 or 6 16-footers a game. We should be pretty decent! 10/18/2012 8:24:07 PM |

Quote : | "1. Is N.C. State ready for its closeup? Since this marks the 30-year anniversary of Jim Valvano's miraculous dash to the 1983 NCAA championship, I figured this would be an appropriate place to start. The three decades that have passed since then have not been kind to Wolfpack fans. Not only has N.C. State not been back to the Final Four, it has only reached the Sweet Sixteen three times in the last 25 years. Meanwhile, those evil twins down Interstate 40, Duke and North Carolina, have reigned supreme not just over Tobacco Road but all of college basketball. So you can understand why so many Wolfpack fans are salivating at the prospect of unseating Duke and North Carolina atop the ACC standings -- for a season, anyway. N.C. State is the hot pick to win the league this season, and for good reason. Though it was the very last team revealed on the CBS Selection Show last March, N.C. State beat San Diego State and Georgetown to reach the Sweet Sixteen, where it nearly knocked off Kansas before losing by three. When the team's best player, 6-foot-9 forward C.J. Leslie, announced he would forego the NBA draft to return for his junior season, it set off a wave of excitement. Leslie is one of four returning starters, and the team is also adding one of the most dynamic freshmen in the country in 6-4 Raleigh native Rodney Purvis. However, a word of warning: Much of this anticipation is predicated on the assumption that Duke and Carolina will have down seasons. The problem is that even though both teams lost significant players (especially North Carolina), they won't be that far down. That makes you wonder whether expectations have already gotten ahead of reality. So it will be up to Mark Gottfried, N.C. State's second-year coach, to make sure his guys tune out the noise. "Last year, we were picked ninth [in the ACC] and we really didn't pay attention to it," he said. "This year, we're gonna be picked higher, and we shouldn't pay attention to that, either. Our guys should enjoy the excitement but not get caught up and drink the Kool Aid." Ah, but that Kool Aid is refreshing. And Wolfpack fans are mighty thirsty after their long, hot walk through the desert" |
