I use the stock motoblur one. I'm not a fan of the messaging widget, and haven't used it since the day after i got the phone. I really don't see the point of having it, and it just slows my phone a little bit otherwise serving no purpose.
someone posted something about the captivate getting a 1.2 GHz OC kernel, but someone benchmarked it and got this: <!--

a) Should have had mobile defense to get an accurate GPS location and so you could lock & wipe it b) If found the person probably just took the battery out and will wipe & resell it.8/14/2010 6:07:12 PM |

dweedle, navigation (and now places) are short cuts in the app drawer that come stock with google maps, it's not an actual app itself... always been there, they made it easier to get to... 8/14/2010 9:56:53 PM |

so I might have the chance to get a free Droid Incredible. My friend absolutely hates it and is loaded and is willing to part with it for fr33. He says it's the worst phone of all time and is a complete piece of shit and he's going back to the iphone. Is it really THAT bad? Is it worth switching from my Palm Pre (which I have very few complaints with)? I kind of want something new but am not willing to shell out a couple hundred bucks and my upgrade is a year away at least.
His complaints:
battery life (says it lasts an hour) programs force close camera freezes phone locks up completely and has to re-insert battery
I went ~6 pages back and didn't see any recent comments on the Incredible. Is Froyo expected to completely change the problems? I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to Android anyway. 8/15/2010 10:16:27 PM |

haha get it, do a factory reset, then profit from his stupidity. The battery life is nothing special, but it should get your through the day 8/15/2010 10:21:12 PM |

^^^ besides the battery life, I haven't heard those complaints. As far as the battery life goes, it seems like everything I've read has said that getting an extended battery is worth it for the Incredible, but those aren't very expensive. I do know that with the extended battery, most people have said they have no problem making it through the day from what I have read. 8/15/2010 10:25:49 PM |

I mean I have a palm pre, which has been known for its own battery problems so I can't imagine it being much worse. I definitely want to try it out at least before i sell it for some greenbacks. 8/15/2010 10:27:55 PM |

I have the Incredible (switched from iPhone 3G) and I love it. My only complaint is the stock battery is crap. It would barely last a normal day for me. Go ahead and order the extended battery that I linked a couple pages back and you'll be fine. 8/15/2010 10:36:40 PM |
Azaka ///Meh 4833 Posts user info edit post |
The Incredible is fully rooted and the 2.2 kernel was recently released. I was trying to get one to swap out with my DX but I didn't make it in time. It's a pretty awesome phone. Take it, get the extended battery, root it and then run Ruby on it. 8/15/2010 11:05:13 PM |

Epic 4G review http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/epic-4g-review/
Quote : | "So is it the right phone for the job? In a word, yes -- the Epic 4G is a great device. Killer, even. Nothing speaks to us more strongly during the course of a review than finishing it and saying, "alright, I'm ready to buy this thing," and the Epic is on the short list of phones that has managed to do it. More than its Galaxy S siblings, it feels like the Epic has overcome its shortcomings -- notably the forgettable UI skin -- to shine, and it's a phone we could easily imagine using day to day. Only thing is, the EVO is also on that short list for us -- and the better camera, bigger screen, and $50 savings versus the Epic still make it our winner in this 4G shootout, though only by the thinnest of margins. Needless to say, if you need a physical keyboard and you're looking for the one of the most musclebound Android phones money can buy, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it." |

I've been hearing differing opinions on this but i want to get yalls thoughts. As i mentioned before my friend has a droid and is going to Europe. Just like the iPhone it has an aGPS and I use my GPS all the time without cell reception using pre-loaded maps (while hiking etc with preloaded topo maps).
I refered him to:
Quote : | "http://www.mapdroyd.com/" |
as mentioned but a Verizon rep told him his GPS would still only work if he was in a "hot spot" (which i'm assuming meant wifi) or in an area with cell signal.
Why would the droid's aGPS not work like the iPhones and pick up a signal (obviously takes longer) with no data signal? Can anyone confirm a Droid can still use its GPS when it has no signal?8/16/2010 3:19:50 PM |

^^I haven't tried that myself but I know I've seen an app that will turn off all cell data meaning 3g, edge, whatever (I can't remember the name of it). If you use that and turn off wifi, you might be able to test that. Although it might still be able to triangulate based on your voice signal, I'm not sure if that needs data to work.

It says signature required though so I might have to try and watch the tracking and be home some tomorrow if I want to get it tomorrow.
Then I'll have to start checking out all the stuff people in here talk about For example, I hear everyone talking about Launcher Pro but don't really even know what it is. I have a lot of catching up to do as a first-time smartphone user I think. 8/17/2010 7:58:33 PM |

http://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/17/droid-2-sick-and-motorola-tablet-mentioned-in-fall-roadmap/
Quote : | "Through a new leaked roadmap we get some new rumored details for Verizon fall lineup which is said to include the Droid 2 world edition, the A957 (possibly named the “Sick”) and the Motorola tablet (MOTMZ600), which we think could launch as the STINGRAY. The D2 could hit store shelves as early as September with global roaming capabilities and should ease the minds of the traveling man. The Stringray could drop some time in November which is sort of what we’ve heard all along. And after the ridiculously successful launch of the Droid 1 last October/November, it would only make sense right? The “Sick” might find life in October, but appears to be completely up in the air and we’re guessing this is the Droid Pro.
Other highlights from the roadmap include a new HTC phone with a 10MP camera. Please tell me that no one plans on buying that." |
Launcher Pro is a 3rd party launcher that gets rid of the stock launcher and homescreens and runs a lot smoother. There really is no reason to use the stock launcher on any phone.

The Droid 2 I played with at Verizon today was still laggy as fuck on the home screens. Someone had installed Launcher Pro on one of the Droid X's there and the difference was like night and day.
and lol, in regards to the high captivate score from earlier. http://briefmobile.com/cyanogen-demonstrates-quadrants-flaws
Quote : | "Today, famed Android developer Cyanogen posted a troubling tweet about the flaws of Aurora Softworks’ Quadrant application. He specifically pointed to the I/O portion of the Quadrant benchmark test. The I/O test is an assessment of the efficiency of “filesystem access and database operations” on a device. In Cyanogen’s tweet, he says he was able to exploit the flaw to get obscenely high Quadrant benchmark scores by mounting “a tmpfs over quadrant’s data directory.” A tmpfs, or temporary file storage system, can artificially inflate a device’s I/O score and provide unreal benchmark improvements.
We’ve seen this kind of artificially high score improvement most notably on the Samsung Galaxy S. The Galaxy S has been berated for it’s use of the RFS filesystem employed by Samsung which has caused stuttering and lag on Galaxy S devices. But hacks that mounted an Ext2, Ext3, or Ext4 partition to store application data boosted real world performance a sizable amount, but Quadrant scores through the roof." |
