Showrunner Glen Mazzara to leave AMC's 'The Walking Dead'

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/showtracker/la-et-st-glen-mazzara-will-leave-amcs-the-walking-dead-after-season-3-20121221,0,3565940.story

Wow. First Frank, now Glen.

Interesting. To be fair though... Season 2 was kind of "meh" for various reasons. Season 3 has been much better imo though. I wish we could know what the creative differences are between him and AMC.

If I worked at AMC and things like this were up to me, I'd make an online survey which (broadly) presented the concepts and poll the audience. First and foremost, they are in the business of making money. Money is made from advertisers. The prices for advertising is mostly determined by ratings and time-slot. You'll get the highest ratings by making shows that people watch. Why not just ask them what the hell it is they want to see? You can still be creative around that... but these directions must be drastically different for anyone to leave the show. And it doesn't need to be the only thing considered by any means. But seriously, why not just ask your already established fan-base what they're interested in when a situation like this arises?

Darabont developed and ran season 1. Mazzara worked on season 1 with Darabont, and then ran seasons 2 and 3.

A writers job should be to tell a good story, not write something so it makes money.

I'm hoping the amc execs were trying to neuter the show so it makes them more money, and maybe mazara wanted to tell a food story?

But season 1 was generally widely loved, so this may be good. I hope they focus on the survival and psychological aspects though, not just make it a slasher show.

ehh, if you're a writing and your stories don't bring people in (and thus make money), I don't think you're going to have much success with any major studio or network.

Something can be written well, and to appeal to masses at the same time. Those things are not as mutually exclusive as some pretentious d-bags would have the world believe. And sometimes the former begets the latter. I mean, if a writer does truly do a bang up job, it will catch wind and people will want to see the work.

But who knows what the AMC wanted vs. what Mazzara wanted. It's all speculation. Maybe Mazzara wanted more zombie slashing and AMC wanted less. Maybe Mazzara wanted Rick to fall in love with Merle. Who the hell knows since they're so butt-buddy about it. What happened to the good 'ole days of just having out with each other via interviews and what not. I want to know what the hell made them part ways. Especially now that this is show-runner number 2.

Quote :
"the horrible director"

The guy (Frank Darabont) hasn't batted a thousand... but he made The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Both of those movies are at a caliber and level of success that people dream of making in their life-time and don't come close. The only episode I think he actually directed was the series premier.. which is arguably one of the best of the series.

Season 2 they spent way too much time on the farm. I think Mazzara was getting better with season 3, though I think (the character) Glenn was suddenly too tuff but it wasn't a big deal.

I'm at S02E02.........does this show get any better? Everybody I talk to is all like, "omg, this show is awesome." but at the moment.....i'm extremely underwhelmed. The acting is absolutely terrible and the positions these idiots put themselves in makes me just want to punch myself in the face.

Season 1 was the best so far as far as story and action. Season 2 has a lot of story, not so much action. Season 3 is better than S2, but not as good as S1, IMO.

It's not a terrible show, but it's not an absolute must watch either. I'd put it in a top 5 shows to watch. The really impressive part of the show is the makeup artist and their surreal zombie/dead look.

It really bugs me how they all use the firearm props...

^^yeah, the makeup/zombies are the best part.

^The acting is horrible. Rick is just awful so far. His character reminds me of Tugg Speedman from Tropic Thunder, trying to make every scene this huge production which comes off as "over doing it". The Crossbow dude is the best, and even he has moments where I'm just like, "ok, that was horrible"

it's easy for him since Daryl is the white trash version of the character he played in Boondock Saints

The way rthe dude overacts Rick reminds me of Bill Paxton in anything Bill Paxton has done

Season 3 >season 1 > season 2

This show is a must watch for me, it's the only show I DVR. I don't think the acting is that bad, it's improved since season 1. Plus this season Carl has been somewhat less annoying

I was really into the Walkin Dead, but perhaps that was because it was better than anything else I was watching at the time. I started watching Sons of Anarchy and Walking Dead was pushed to the side until I finished SoA. lol I went through 5 seasons of SoA in 2 weeks. Fwiw, my feelings for the Walking Dead are about the same when I was watching Lost.

is there any way I can catch up on this? I watched the first two seasons on netflix and i've seen the first episode of season 3. I know there are websites out there that have them, but I also know that I'm workin about a 50/50 chance that I get a virus instead of a choppy video. Anyone know anything?

Is it that you do not have cable? Because I'm sure they'll air the first half of the season before the second half starts (they usually do anyhow).

Or since you're clearly OK with watching it illegally on the internet, just download them using a torrent.

This is a belated question from back on the farm, but when Rick went to the town's bar to retrieve Hershel, did he kill the two men who entered the bar with headshots?

Thinking back, I'm wondering why they didn't reanimate.

Just got a download from iTunes for some cast interviews and other future DVD extras for the upcoming season. Nothing of note that I can tell for the moment.

Regarding the final scene of the mid season finale, where the Governor outs Merle as the spy who allowed the attack. There's been a lot of speculation that it's so he can go in and spy on the prison crew, but has anyone mentioned that he told the governor Michonne was dead only a few episodes before? I think he told him they killed her after she slaughtered some of their men, they cut her head off and then the guy carrying it was torn apart by zombies and Merle couldn't get it back.

Since Michonne was the one who finished off his daughter and then mutilated the governor, he'd be reasonably upset with Merle. I think Merle will still turn to the governor with information on the prison, or do his part to upset Rick's group hoping for some retribution from the Gov. Ultimately I WILL STOP POSTING SPOILERS FROM THE COMIC IN THIS THREAD

The writers of the show seem to have a special interest in tormenting Rick and driving him insane.

So far everyone in the group has suffered the loss of family members, but Rick's pain only starts there.

He almost dies in Normal World then wakes up in crazy Zombieland, whereas everyone else got to watch the word decay and acclimate appropriately. His wife has an affair with his best friend, who then goes insane, tries to push Rick out and then when he's unsuccessful finally attempts to murder him, forcing Rick to kill him. His wife then goes nuts on him because he did the only thing left to him to fix a situation she created. So far he's been the trigger man on every living-kill except Dale. He's left in charge of a shrinking group that hates him for what he did, but won't replace him as leader.

Then, just to push him over the edge they place everyone in a safe environment, with a (sort of) doctor to deliver Lori's baby. She starts to mend things with Rick and he's feeling better about it when BAM, T-Dog dies, Lori dies in childbirth and Maggie and Glen are kidnapped, leaving him to rescue them.

They're pitting Rick against the Gov, and Rick can't die (lest the series end), but there's no way this season will end with him unscathed.

So, just so I'm straight, if events in the show occur and we're speculating about the second half of the season, then we shouldn't do that since there may be similarities to the comic book?

I don't really understand the spoilers deal, the comic and the show are on completely different story lines. Was everyone in a tizzy when the 2nd season ended and everyone started discussing the prison, or michonne, or the governor despite none of these characters/settings having been introduced yet?

Not to mention, the guy (X) I accuse of doing something to someone didn't exist in the comic book, how can me saying "X is going to do Y" be a spoiler when X is a new character to the show.

Frustrating. Now I must fight the urge to post nothing but spoilers from the comic book....

Anywayz, back to my original point. Merle's a free agent. Most people seemed to have forgotten that he promised the governor Michonne was dead and then she comes back to seek revenge. He also seems pretty pissed at Rick for the roof thing.

it's not speculation when you are discussing something that clearly happens in the source material and could have a big impact on the show, new viewers, and casual fans of only the show.

this thread was designed with the idea in mind that the television show as a separate entity from the comic book. And discussions delving into spoilers, deviations, and critical plot elements from the latter was the entire reason users created this companion thread message_topic.aspx?topic=620242.

trust me, you aren't offending me or making me mad with spoiler talk. I only keep the peace.

I feel like the writing changed direction in a major way between parts of season 1 and season 2 & beyond. The scenes where Rick was hanging out with the man and his son, while still in his hometown. The man was out there watching his wife, and his wife was obviously hanging around their home. At one point she walks up and tries to open the door to her own home. This obviously means that she A) Still has some recollection of who she was and B) Possesses motor skills not seen anywhere else in the show.

Maybe this has been discussed earlier on in this thread, but I wonder what prompted the change. This could have had a big impact later on, especially with scenes from the prison, where it could have been possible for them to figure out how to get in from the outside, into the prison yard.

Obviously? Nah, it could also have meant she sensed movement inside the house, and wanted to eat brains.

How did the writing change in a major way again?
