nice...never would've guessed we'd have a top 20 finish at this time last year.

I would have called you crazy if you told me we'd finish #20 coming into conference play. Or after the GT game. Or even after the Duke/FSU/UNC/Clemson slide.

i'm pretty sure it's a result of our acc tourney run (including a very close and controversial loss to unc) and our ncaa tourney run (and the very close loss to Kansas who went to the finals)

i almost hesitate to even bring this up, but i wonder how coach lowe feels about this. i mean on the one hand, he clearly just loves nc state and would be excited to see us do well. but on the other hand, it can't be good for his personal ego to see the remnants of his team totally overachieve with a new coach

reminds me of butch davis/larry coker, except obviously not quite as drastic

Lowe is happy for us no doubt.

i don't think his ego is hurt -- to me it just didnt seem he had a huge ego to me.

Lowe was interviewed after we made it to the sweet 16. Said he was happy about us or something along those lines...basically coach speak.

He gave an interview about this several weeks ago. Talked about how happy he was for the team, and for the program. Not only as a former player, but also as a former coach. He was really a stand up guy in his interview. Said he wished his job didn't end the way it did, but Gott is doing the right thing for the program, and he's happy in the NBA, where he belongs, and he holds no hard feelings.

Edit: Here's the article, it was originally N&O, but I could only find the Charlotte one. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/03/19/3111774/lowe-enjoying-wolfpacks-ncaa-success.html

mark gottfried made the list

Quote :
"Gottfried is slowly making N.C. State one of the better teams in the country.

The one thing he has to deal with is playing third fiddle to North Carolina and Duke (and sometimes fourth to Wake Forest).

But, he's persevered and has the Wolfpack in position to be a yearly contender.

His passion and emotion is evident on the sidelines and in postgame news conferences.

One thing is for sure, his players know he always has their back."

^4 I always thought of Herb as a likeable guy. Most of the crap surrounding his departure was the result of the sports media, not Herb.

Yes. Tim Duncan Years. Chris Paul year (minus the game he was suspended do to the nut punch on Hodge) basically a long time ago. then they made the worst coaching hire in the history of the NCAA, worse than Sid.

^^See, I look at "playing fourth fiddle" as more than just being worse than the other team for a year or two. It's not a year by year thing, imo. If we happen to beat duke and unc next year, that sure has hell doesn't mean they are playing second fiddle to us.

I'm gonna say that Wake Forest will need to have at least half the number of ACC championship trophies that we have before we even sniff that 4th fiddle bullshit. I mad.

Until Bzzzz came aboard, we were 4th fiddle to Wake Forest for a 10+ years. They had the Tim Duncan, then Josh Howard, then Chris Paul years. We were "on par" for a few years when we had Hodge to combat Howard/Paul and went to a few NCAA tourneys...but they were ranked in the top 10 for a little while, got a two seed one year I believe, and were generally in the national spotlight a lot longer than we were.

Obviously that's over now. But we were definitely "4th fiddle" in North Carolina for a little while there.

Wake trumps us for Paul and Duncan alone. They've put two probably hall of famers into the league in the last 15 years. We've given them Cedric Simmons and JJ Hickson.

And over the past 11 years, they have finished above us 6 times in the ACC standings. But they also have finished dead last more number of times. There is no doubt though that we are, and will be the better program.

That write-up in the 20 most likeable coaches list doesn't really sound like something you'd say about a coach after his first season with the team. He's "slowly" making us one of the better teams in the country? Sweet 16 in the first year, plus several publications have us pre-season top 10 for next year already.

And yes, NC State has (*shudder*) played fourth fiddle behind even Wake Forest in the not so distant past, but that certainly wasn't true this year. This is the only year that is relevant for how Gottfried is doing here.

I think it's cool that he made this list and all that, but I don't really think the writer did a great job of covering Gottfried.
