What's the nature of the work where the number of hours you're physically at the office matters?

I work writing software, and no it is not "important" that we be there a set number of hours, but we do get email reminders every month or so that say something like "make sure that you are putting in your time and that you are here during the hours that you have selected for your schedule." or "you are required to work 40 hours if you are in a salaried position" because nobody in our office give a shit about the job that they do. They just show up and work at their own pace. The term deadline is not something that anybody is too familiar with and management does a pretty poor job of even enforcing that people show up to work on time. They do not allow anybody to work from home and they really try and "police" that people are here and putting in 40 hours, but many of the employees have found ways around this, like showing up late because they know that the supervisor doesnt come in till later, or leaving early because the boss is out of the office.

It just bugs me that these people have decent jobs and yet they cant even bother to put in the minimum time and effort required.

And i work for the state if that helps any of this make sense. most of the office just tries to skate by and do as little as possible.

I won't lie, I work 8-4 (working lunch) and sometimes don't bother coming in til around 8:30 since I know my boss doesn't get here until 9:30 most days. But I also bust my ass so I can get away with it.

For me, not having enough work to fill my time would be miserable. At my job I'm fully focused or busy pretty much ALL the time.

I do IT work for the State. It wouldn't matter if they got their job done, but they typically don't. Right now they're just stealing from the taxpayers.

This one woman decides to take a position in my department and complains constantly. Since day one, she's complained about the rotation schedule. If you knew you'd hate the schedule coming in, why the fuck would you take the job?

What a royal pain in the ass bitch cunt hypocrite.

gotcha, makes more sense now. I worked for the NC Forest Service in IT for a while back in the late 90's. I was once informally reprimanded for "showing everyone up" or in actual terms, being really productive with my time.

sounds like a shitty situation for both of you.

I also enjoy it when my fellow systems analyst claims she's working from home and her laptop is at her desk here at work. We don't allow people to VPN in from home computers. I wonder how much work she can be doing...

I work 9-6 but my boss usually works 10-6 so sometimes I show up 9:15

I hate when people scheduling useless meetings and I lose 2-3 hrs of productivity.

Dear lord there's this guy in my office that is LOUD AS FUCK. And does he choose to be loud in his office with the door closed? Of course not! It's much more effective to stand in the middle of the hallway being loud as fuck while disturbing everyone else in the morning

If you write me a damn email requesting something, don't come by my desk and ask me, "Did you read my email?" without checking to see if I replied to you first. If you do this, I'm just going to tell you to read my reply

My boss updated the class facebook page with an update saying "my (preschool) class" did this and "my (toddler) class" did that and basically took credit for all we did today.

She did do most of the work for the preschool class, but she did nothing with the toddlers. The other teacher and I did it all, and I actually worked with both classes.

Apparently she does this all the time. This will change.

Him: "I don't have a mailbox in the mail room."
Me: "Okay, well I'm not the person in charge of that but we can go take a look and see if it was put in the wrong place."
Him: "Okay."

::halfway to other building where mailroom is::

Him: "We're going to the mailroom?"
Me: "Yes..."
Him: "Why don't you trust me?"
Me: "What, this has nothing to do with trusting you..."
Him: "I understand. You don't trust people when they tell you things."
Me: "Well you can just write down your name on this notepad and I'll look into it without you."
Him: "No, I come because you don't trust me."
Me:

::Gets to mailroom, shows him his mailbox::

Him: Oh. ::storms out of mailroom::

When I go to work on a saturday, it's me and two other people *retail*, and one of the other people started 2 days prior, and the other one shows up 2 hours late, hungover and just sits there most of the day. What a fun day for me!

I'm compiling a report and one of the guys uses 6-7 spaces to start a new paragraph instead of using the tab key. Who does that?

^^yeah personal preference maybe.

this guy just hit the space bar anywhere from 5-8 times so the spacing wasn't even consistent.

several people have also had trouble with single spacing and 1.15 spacing (ie one paragraph is single spaced and the next is 1.15). This may have been WORD (also a workplace annoyance) screwing with me though.

The same people that don't know how to use styles and headings or tables and alignment correctly and tab and space everything. So annoying.

Asked coworker directly if he needed a certain part for a several-hour process I was about to run

He said sure

An hour later he needs it back when I'm in the middle of my experiment

One time when I was in elementary school I was in line for lunch on some kind of school spirit day. They had a thing where if you got a smiley face sticker on your lunch plate (something like 1 in 50 plates had stickers) you would win a free dessert. My bitch ass teacher cut right in front of me and wouldn't you know it, the plate she got had a damn sticker on it that would have been mine. That chocolate pudding would have been mine but that bitch got it instead. Like her fat ass needed chocolate pudding any way.

not my annoyance, but the new guy's

hey it's your first day! welcome to the company!

here's your new office. yes it has been used as a file repository for the better part of the last decade, but here's a trash can and the proprietary dumpster to be incinerated is down there. everyone's busy, no one is going to help you. clean it out, find the desk, and get to learnin'!

(plus he's already acquired the nickname "sling blade"... so he's got that going for him)

People cherry picking the work they do instead of picking the highest priority job, people shouting about sports shit outside my cubicle every morning, people giving presentations they didn't prepare for that aren't necessary because we already know how to use the software, people taking dangerous/unverified tools out of development folders and making them available for everyone to use, people not checking work that was done 2 years ago and operating on wrong assumptions and nearly costing the company tens of thousands of dollars.

Most of all, it's the fact that none of these fucking mistakes have any effect on whether people keep their jobs or not that pisses me off.
