I heard clips of how much gunfire was going on, wondering how he didn't catch a couple rounds myself.

I kind of understand not reading his Miranda rights initially, so as to try to get him to talk and see if there is any further ongoing threat (booby traps, other bombs, additional co-conspirators, etc).

I do think that he should, after that, be read his Miranda rights and treated as a criminal case, albeit at the federal level. Of course, I think they're gonna have so much physical evidence against him that it won't matter if his testimony is admissible in court, anyway (which is all that would happen if they didn't Mirandize him).

I totally disagree with treating him as an enemy combatant, though, UNLESS they clearly determine that he was an operative of, say, an al-Qaeda affiliate group, etc.

^Even though he's not mirandized, my understanding (take this with a grain of salt, as this is cobbled by "legal analysts") is that anything he says is inadmissible in his trial... But anything he does say is permitted to lead to other evidence. He must be mirandized for a confession to count

And I'm wholly against treating him as an enemy combatant, too. Our courts are capable of punishing him completely. I don't see what it possibly gains them. No jury would ever find him not guilty.

The Saudi kid that got hurt wasn't even the one who was deported. It was some random other guy who actually had his Visa expire from what I read.

CNN was implying that they used flash bangs and blanks to scare him out. I'm not sure they actually shot up the boat.

And if they can prove that he knows what Miranda rights are, it not relevant whether they are read. And as duke pointed out, there's plenty of evidence and charges to keep him away for a LONG time despite what he says and does.

He's young enough though to not get life in prison, he could potentially be out...
