I'm calculating costs, and even if I've missed one or two things, I believe SOMEONE is profiting from our nonprofit preschool. And it isn't the classroom.

Not only do I share my cube with the smelly guy, he smacks his lips constantly while eating at his desk.

My cube-mate leaves his cell phone on his desk. Sometimes he leaves his wireless work phone on the desk too. He has a google voice number that rings on both phones. So if he's not as his desk I have to sit through something on the order of:

RING RING tweedleeedleeet tweedleeedleet bzzzzzzzzzzzt RING RING tweedleeeeedleeet tweeedleeeedleet bzzzzzzzzzzt

as both phones make their loud-ass ring tones and then vibrate in a cacophony five feet from my head, until it goes to voice mail. Then one of the phones makes this weird sound to indicate a missed call, just to cap off the festivities.

This is the same fellow who put his trash can in the walkway of our cube entrance, which is only about three feet wide between our two desks. So I'm constantly kicking it as I leave the cube. Knocked the fucker over today and had to clean up all the crap that spilled out of it. Granted, I had a surplus computer parked on my side of the cube entryway for a while, but at least if that got kicked, it didn't overturn and spill trash.

*Yes, I do sound passive aggressive. But they seem like too small annoyances to make a scene over. So I seethe, and vent here.

Whispering "excuse me" into a closed wooden door is not likely to make that door magically open.

people who don't speak, or acknowledge that you have spoken to them. I always speak to someone who passes me in the hallway, or at least smile. Like seriously...how can you make direct eye contact with someone from 2 feet away and be a dick.

^ Obviously not. Point well taken though. She still aggravated me about jumping in my conversation and then wanting out when I turned around to talk to her. Oh well. Lesson learned.

slightly annoying but i hate it when the cleaning crew cleans the toilets and leaves the seats up in the stalls. While it is a nice little flag to let me know I get a clean toliet to use it still makes me a bit that I have to put in the effort to lower the seat

what is with women's fear of adjusting the toilet seat? you guys realize men do this multiple times a day, right?

Adjusting the toilet seat is MAN'S WORK. Evidently.

Speaking of the cleaning crew, or their absence, we have a new university-wide policy that the cleaning crew will only empty office trash cans once a month. If it fills up before then, you have to take the bag yourself and find a common area can big enough to accept your bag, or go to a dumpster. Evidently this was the way it was done at the chancellor's former university and he thought it was a great way to save money here. Thanks, Fearless Leader.

^ lol seriously? I'd be screwed if that happened here. I don't even know where the trash goes in my building

So what, they vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, etc, but won't touch the trash? Or do they just not come at all except once a month?

I hate it when I get forwards from co-workers (that go out to the entire office) that are preceded with "this is so true" and are followed with some "Friends are forever" or "our generation/economy/president suck" style cheesy forward... I've got enough legit email to worry about... what are YOU doing all day??

And then I get about 7 responses about how right they are from other co-workers... (there should be an emoticon slapping it's forehead... I'd use it *here*)

i hate REPLY ALL. loathe it. someone will send out an email about some potluck lunch thing for a coworker who is getting married/having a baby/etc and everyone will reply all like a conversation. there are like 30 of us in the dept - i dont like having inbox flooded with emails arguing over if we should order pizza or have people bring in food!

The email forwarding crowd are the same ones who behave like they work so much harder than I do because I like to leave at 5 and they are "so busy" they stay late or come early.

Weeeelllll....I don't stand around in other people's office shootin the bullshit for hours AND I usually work through lunch.

I wonder sometimes. They certainly don't dust anywhere except the common areas. They mop the hallways at the most inconvenient possible times. Allegedly they vacuum, but on a schedule I'm not familiar with (the carpet never really looks any cleaner). Perhaps they vacuum once a month as well. They do a good job of cleaning the bathrooms, at least, though it seems like they're always cleaning the one I'm trying to use at any given point in time.

As many custodial/housekeeping people as we have on staff, I really wonder what they do for 75% of their day. Though perhaps the new policy will reduce those numbers. (Not that I like firing people, but really, they don't seem very busy).

Reminds me of this "exchange" between my uncle and my mom. My uncle posted a picture of his work monitor that had a ton of dust on it:

Quote :
"I don't think the cleaning people in our NY office know what dust is. This is all over my monitor and desk. I guess I should get back to this office more often..."

Quote :
"Poor darlin. My maid missed my monitor too...and the rest of the studio, and the house come to think of it. Litter box, dishes, and oh my gosh if the light from the window pours into the kitchen just right, the stainless fridge is COVERED with cat fur and dust. Hideous. And damn-it my grass is long again...where's the gardener? I don't have time to chase after the gardener...well maybe, but I digress. Sheesh. Do I have to do everything? Apparently so. You know those Swiiffer duster things work very well for those pesky places like infrequently occupied desks that cleaning crews are sick of re-visiting. "

^^ haha they have NEVER EVER swept, mopped, or vacuumed where I have been.
The only time I ever had trash taken out was when they got this really nice new guy and just when I was like hey this is kinda nice, they started this new policy.

why can't people just sit down at their desks and do work when they first come in? why do they have to do a million other things that are disruptive, like cleaning their keyboards, clean the kitchen area, talking...

So, we're planning a move to a new building. As part of this move, we're consolidating / scrapping / recycling tons of material.

One co-worker's office resembled something you'd see on TLC's extreme hoarders. Stacks and stacks of old papers, reference materials. It was a maze and death trap. They were on vacation the last week.

After 2.5 - 3 months worth of warning from a supervisor to do nothing but clean out their office, the supervisor and other co-workers went into said person's office and cleared out a ton of stuff.

They come back from vacation this morning.

This is sure to be awesome.

- I need changes made to this PDF, here's the new copy and photos I want to use.

Me - sure no problem, do you have the font family for us to use?

- No, does it matter?

Me - not really just a few cosmetic changes, mainly the $ and % will look slightly different. Here's an example of the difference

- That's unacceptable.

Me - Well if you can't provide the font the cost to purchase it is $617.00, here's the link for it. Once you get it send it to me and I'll get you a proof

- We talked about it and the differences aren't all that bad, so no need to purchase that font and send it to you.

Me - No problem.

*Step and repeat this conversation at least once a week

If we are going to go the cleaning crew route... The cleaning crew here doesn't even bother to clean around the urinals. Years and years of pee-spiddle buildup on the walls has created a permanent toxic cloud in the corner of the bathroom. Perhaps the cleaning crew lost one too many a member in the haze of death and have decided to no longer venture in.

One of these days I'm going to come in with a hazmat suit and a power washer with a 100% bleach solution. It may be easier to just make an even bigger, easily visible, impossible to ignorable mess of that area such that they are forced into doing a once over.

Ugh I hate when people try to male a joke out of EVERYTHING while on the phone. Like every sentence is supposed to be funny. Dude, you are not funny. Maybe the first remark made me chuckle, but by the time you try to have 20 or so punchlines in a 3 minute period, It's excessive. Just stop. Now you are annoying me.

I work at the university as well and when they put this policy into place, they also put a giant trashcan by the stairs/entrance to our office and sent a memo out about how this would be taken care of. I have also noticed more of these trashcans placed in office areas around campus. The cleaning people are lazy anyways and didnt take our trash out unless it was completely full anyways. I would much rather take my trash out than have budget cuts that get rid of my position. And it is a great way to save money, we went from two ladies cleaning offices daily to one that only has to come for a few hours in the morning. If the cleaning crew in your building is anything like the one in mine, all they do is sit on their ass and talk on the phone all day anyways.

Situation I posted above didn't quite pan out like I'd thought. Apparently, the supervisor had called said person over the vacation to let them know, so the shock and awe was subdued.

I was expecting a lot of yelling, tears, etc. etc.

Didn't happen.

True, better than a pink slip. Our offices were cleaned overnight anyway so I haven't personally seen the difference (most of our cleaning/housekeeping people work 4AM to 1PM) but the small crew that works afternoons/evenings do often seem to be less than busy. There is one who is always sitting watching TV as I'm leaving, and another who has been seen napping by multiple people.

is it normal practice to not put a subject line in an email and just type what you want to say in its place?

it annoys me when the email is a question in the subject line, then nothing in the body...or when they start typing the question/statement and have to finish the rest in the body (that one really annoys me)

I don't get it

Ugh I don't know what it is at this school but if I'm trying to get in contact with someone outside of my department I might as well be trying to get in contact with Jesus himself. Everyone here likes to joke about how the different departments are silos of activity but it pisses me off when I need an answer from someone in order to do my job
