Switching to the zone for a while was a good call. Otherwise, no way this game should have been that close. The turnover situation is ridiculous. Fells played well on the defensive end, but jesus fucking christ how hard is it to get him involved? Lowe needs to script a set of plays to get him started or something.
------------
I know its lowe NBA background and all, but we need to do something more varied than going to mccauley when he is one-on-one in the post. In college, it's not illegal to have weakside help so the other team just gets an easy rebound.
Two years ago, mccauley was winning those one-on-one situations enough to make it worth it. Now, it just ends with a missed shot and an easy rebound for the other team. Also, other teams have gotten bigger and faster in their front courts. So even if mccauley can fake someone out with his whiteboy moves, his defenders can recover and still get the block.
Either we find a way to get weakside rebounding in the picture or we set up some easy dishes.
Even though he had butter fingers today, I support costner going one-on-one. He commands a double team and can make good passes. Our entire offense has to run through him.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. We won because Georgia Tech was more inept than we were. That was easily one of the worst basketball games I've ever seen. I've seen us play bad, maybe worse than that first half. But the combination of horrible basketball play by both teams in the first half was unbelievable. I couldn't stop laughing. Both teams only slightly redeemed themselves in the 2nd half.

I'm happy we won. I actually forgot how it felt after an ACC win.
But holy shit that first half was disgusting. I can still feel good about the game but not about the team. Although I guess you can say I feel better about the team now than I would have had we lost. But it doesn't change my opinion on the fact that this team is in a lot of trouble this year. 1/17/2009 2:46:34 PM |

i dunno, that last steal to put it out of reach with horner, sid was motioning for horner to go to the basket, when it would be a much smarter thing to hold on to the ball, and make them come after you for the foul. little things like this have always annoyed me about sidney, and really add up. 1/17/2009 2:52:47 PM |

It was good to get a win, and I'm glad we didn't just roll over and die when down by 10.
But Jesus, we have to play better.
GT was forcing easy turnovers by just having the defender put his hand out in front of him. I can't wait to see what happens when we play Duke next week.

I thought he did a pretty good job today for the most part. No bone headed substitutions. Left the hot hand in a lot. The only thing that irritated me was it took until the 10 min mark in the second half to switch to a zone d. Hopefully in the future we will switch a little sooner. Overall though he seemed to do a good job today. 1/17/2009 3:57:42 PM |

Quote : | ""We had to win this one. We just had to, and I think we all knew it," said reserve guard Trevor Ferguson.
Otherwise, the Wolfpack (10-5, 1-2 ACC) would have gone to Duke on Tuesday without a conference win and without a heck of a lot of hope. Odds are, State still will lose to the Blue Devils by double digits and struggle to gain traction in the ensuing series of games against Boston College, Miami and North Carolina. It's hardly a big stretch of the imagination to envision the Pack winding up No. 10 or No. 11 in a 12-team league at the conclusion of regular season.
That, of course, would not bode well for Lowe in his third season at his alma mater. The guy's heart and feet are in the right place, and no one who has ever known him is hoping for anything except the best.
But it's getting testy for Lowe. With more point-guard question marks than most ACC teams encounter over the course of a decade, much less three seasons, Lowe is beginning to pile up critics at roughly the same rate his team runs up its turnover total. There were 22 -- including six by starting playmaker Julius Mays --against the Jackets." |
