Absolutely not. Miranda rights shouldn't be optional, especially not in this case. Making things inadmissible in court is supposed to discourage the gov't from trampling on these rights. To have gov't officials say "we don't give a rat's ass about his rights, we're going to trample on them because we don't care about what will be admissible in court, we'll do what we want" is abhorrent! Any gov't official espousing that view should be immediately impeached for going against their oath of office, and he should be thrown in jail! Then to have a Marine, who is sworn to protect and defend the Constitution, saying the same things? Come on, man...

I opened up discussion on the reddit pics and the missing student on my facebook page. I don't think I'm a bad person for doing it, and if someone singled me out for doing something I didn't do when there's no criminal or other charges involved, I don't think I'd care very much and certainly wouldn't tell news organizations it's affected my life to any degree. I think it's a little different for muslims, middle easterners, etc. However, in the aftermath of everything that's gone down Thursday night, nobody's gonna remember who you are except by your own devices if you keep bringing attention to yourself media-wise.

It's a Miranda warning, not "Miranda rights." You have all the rights the warning reminds you of regardless of whether they are read to you or not. A Miranda Warning serves to more protect the law enforcement and their investigation then it is to protect you.

We have his house and computer and friends, there crime seems generally ill planned, why wouldn't we let the investigators who have a much clearer picture about who they are and why they did this make this decision?
