i just gave my wife her D40 we are still trying to figure out how to use it...
I thought putting it on S let you choose the shutter speed but it won't let me? it says subject too bright 9/7/2008 4:00:53 PM |

haha read the manual-that will help a lot and yes S is for shutter speed, to adjust spin the nob to the right of the lcd screen to speed it up or slow it down. 9/7/2008 4:13:35 PM |

we read the manual and are still confused. P, S, A, and all the preset modes are confusing..
the manual says S lets you adjust the shutter speed while the camera chooses the aperture.
i know what all the terms mean, but i go outside and adjust shutter speed to slow and it still takes it fast. 9/7/2008 4:19:04 PM |
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
Because it's still wicked bright outside. Change the ISO or play with the Manual setting which lets you choose all of them. But you're likely to overexpose if you don't set the aperture high with a slow shutter speed.

OK...guess i just misunderstood i thought if i put a slow shutter speed outside, it would choose a small aperture to compensate... guess it is just TOO bright outside for too slow of a shutterspeed.
but the example shows a waterfall picture that was taken in the daytime. everything is fine except the water is blurred...how did they achieve that if it was so bright outside 9/7/2008 4:43:09 PM |
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
They probably had it on manual. When I tried doing it I put the camera under the shade so it wouldn't overexpose too much on Manual with a small aperture and a slower shutter speed but even then it didn't need to be that slow. I also had a tripod. You'll want to shoot in the early morning or evening for best results colorwise. Just play with your settings to see what you can get. 9/7/2008 4:48:17 PM |

I was planning on using it more for surf photography where it would be mostly out of the water shooting but it would end up underwater anyway. Still I think it would be expensive. 9/7/2008 6:23:00 PM |

sweet! Think tank has a sale on airport backpacks from today till oct 3rd! Perfect timing to pick one up for my flight to Indy on Thursday. I've had my eye on their gear and was waiting to hear back from a few local shops if they'd make a deal with me, but screw them and waiting around for the past two weeks with no progress.

Might order the airport acceleration backpack since it's large enough to hold two bodies, the 300 and a few other lens/accessories in one bag that fits with international travel. 9/8/2008 1:13:29 AM |

It's time for me to pimp the flickr group again, where we need some votes to break a tie on last week's "red" pictures, and we're stretching the deadline on this week's sunset shots to give you shutterbugs more time to get one in.

Shit! I just bought 600+ worth of photo luggage from Adorama. AHHH!!! My bill is gonna be high this month. But should be pretty cool stuff incoming in. Ordered the Think Tank Airport Acceleration backpack, Steroid speed belt, pixel racing harness, modular 6 pouch set, big stick monopod holster, and the hydrophobia rain cover. Suppose to rain all weekend at MotoGP. 9/8/2008 11:31:54 AM |

But best of luck to you.

A friend of mine shot her first wedding a few weeks ago for someone in her family. She was doing pretty good until one of her younger cousins wanted to take a picture and decided to delete it. Instead of hitting delete, she hit delete all. About 3/4 of her shots got wiped out. After freaking out for a little bit, she continued taking pictures. Luckily, I had recently used http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm for someone else and figured we'd give it a shot. End result, all files were recovered.
Don't let anyone else use your camera unless they know what they're doing. 9/11/2008 10:01:36 AM |

She doesn't even know what she's doing with her camera.
No offense Kiwi, but it doesn't sound like you're anywhere near experienced enough to shoot a wedding. You've never done one and now you're gonna be thrown out on your own? There is going to be unusual lighting, lots of people, and anyone who isn't 100% comfortable with the gear they are using (or what they are doing) will likely fail. Also, what kind of lens and flash will you be using? Do you know how to properly use a flash? Do you know the typical "must-get" shots for a wedding?
I mean, best of luck to you, but this sounds like a terrible idea. 9/11/2008 10:33:21 AM |

It's probably worth looking around on Flickr and other photo sites at other people's wedding shots for ideas. I took pictures at my cousin's wedding not long after I got my camera 2 years ago. I, by no means, would have wanted the job of being the official wedding photographer, but I think I got some decent shots - despite using the on-camera flash and canon's "kit lens." I've learned a lot since then, and would do things differently if I do it again. [link]http://http://www.flickr.com/photos/bigcementpond/sets/72157594193388251/[/link] 9/11/2008 11:44:22 AM |

I'm going to be an assistant photographer. I've read a huge book and have more to read through about lighting, must get shots, and wedding photography in general. My only concern is it's an outdoor wedding at 3pm so I have to make sure not to overblow the dress. I've done lots of research online, looked at lots of websites for ideas, styles, and flow, and I've talked with a professional photographer a lot too. I may not have my camera at the point where it's an extension of myself but I'm a lot more confident in my capabilities today than I was six months ago,
Not being the lead photographer will take lots of the pressure off of me so I can make sure I get key points while being creative.
Any last minute pointers would be awesome though. 9/11/2008 1:45:47 PM |
