Ive been told that if you have played guitar before and are having problems use a pick. I just thump down with my thumb and can beat everything on expert, but I have no chance of getting higher than 4 on some of the songs that require you to strum up and down.

5 starred all of easy this weekend; and all but 4 songs on medium
i've gotten to the 5th or 6th tier on hard and managed to 5 star 2 songs, but just barely passed 90% of the songs i've beaten. failed many on my first few tries.
i don't know how you people 5 star all those songs

And I am stuck on "Free bird" on Medium.. has anyone scored a 5* on this song in Medium / Hard ? How do you guys move your fingers between notes off by 1 and coming at you so damn fast in succession? Can anyone play it for real in a real guitar???

usually you only have to strum the first note, and you can hold the higher of the two notes down the whole time.

The practice helps a lot.

I was stuck on psychobilly on hard, went to the practice menu and went through the sections one by one until I could get at least 75%, then played it again and passed it first try.
