I encourage anyone interested in hillsborough street revitalization to write articles for the tech just to keep the story alive, to patronize the shops/restraints there more frequently, and to PM TGD if you are interested in working with student gov on this issue.
Also the new student body pres was the pro wolfline bus to downtown thing… we’ll see how that goes. 4/5/2007 2:11:18 PM |

hillsborough will never thrive as long as board bucks exist.

and board bucks would never be able to compete with Hillsborough if it is revitatilized because board bucks is one of the biggest scams this school has ever pulled...
I love how they used to round up the cost of shit in the c stores 4/5/2007 2:36:16 PM |

i disagree. freshmen are going to get board bucks. period. it doesn't matter if hillsborough st is a damn oasis.
it is unfair competition and probably a good 1/3 of the student population doesn't even go to hillsborough st for lunch because of it. 4/5/2007 2:41:55 PM |

It would be nice though if the university had some deal with all the Hillsborough st. businesses that allowed students to use board bucks at those locations...
They had/have something like that for the AllCampus card already i think but this would be better, IMO 4/5/2007 2:48:43 PM |

i brought this up to a friend the other night. and she brought up the good point that most of the buildings on campus open into campus, not towards hillsborough st. hell the library even HAS an entrance/exit towards hillsborough st that they leave locked. little things like this might do a lot to get actually going to hillsborough st on people's minds.

I will admit, alot of the hobos I have encountered were pretty nice...
But I have also seen some of them throw food at passerbys when being refused money
The issue is much broader than just NCSU and Hillsborough and I understand this. More police may be the answer though 4/5/2007 2:58:59 PM |

I'm the Vice Chairman of the City's Board of Adjustment, and plan on working with the Council to try and get some tangible change beyond a mere traffic circle. We need people like you who are passionate about the issue and know what they're talking about.

Hillsborough St made the tech's top story again today with its year in review:
Quote : | "Hillsborough Street
It took six years for the city of Raleigh to come to a decision on plans for Hillsborough Street, but on Feb. 20 the City Council passed a plan for roundabouts and streetscape improvements on the street.
The plan, Plan H-3, calls for two roundabouts, one at the Pullen and Hillsborough intersection and another just north of Hillsborough on Oberlin. It also calls for streetscape improvements along the N.C. State portion of the street, including medians.
Although the original hope was for the renovations to begin this summer, the plans have been pushed back as the city looks for further funding and plans.
Kimley-Horn, the design firm working on the project, is working on getting a more detailed plan to present to City Council and hoping to get construction started in early 2008.
"I'm just glad we're moving forward with this," Quick said. "It is definitely a step in the right direction."

Quote : | "Yellow bulldozer building is sold Site near NCSU could be rehabbed Jack Hagel, Staff Writer RALEIGH - The co-founder of one of the region's leading technology companies is taking a stab at Triangle real estate. Bob Young, who helped start software company Red Hat in 1993 and was its chief executive through its formative years, paid $3.5 million for the former N.C. Equipment Co. building on Hillsborough Street, known for its big, yellow bulldozer sign.
"I'm a big fan -- a consumer -- of light, industrial space," Young said Wednesday. "They have more character; they're more fun. They're more interesting places to go to work in the morning."
There's no guarantee that he will keep the abandoned building. Young is weighing whether to renovate it for "white-collar, software engineering kind of space" or to find a partner to redevelop the 2.2-acre site.
The latter would be more likely. The property, which is just inside the Beltline, has long been sought by developers.
Five years ago, Raleigh developer Val Valentine said he wanted to use it as part of a seven-acre plan that included a grocery, offices, condos and apartments for students at nearby N.C. State University. The project never materialized.
Young, who bought the property as Rose Mary Developments LLC, declined to say whether the Valentine plan would be revived.
Documents filed with the state say: "Rose Mary ... committed itself to redevelopment of the property for office and commercial, including retail, use."
Young started looking at the property a year ago, when his wife's company, Needlepoint.com, needed space. The sale was slowed because the property is on contaminated land and required more liability-protection paperwork -- and time -- than expected.
Needlepoint found a home near Cameron Village, so Young is thinking about using the property for a business incubator, offering space that would attract startup tech companies. He wouldn't have to look far for tenants.
"Being just down the road from N.C. State gives us access to engineering talent that is increasingly in scarce supply," said Young, who left Red Hat's board in 2005.
There's a chance some of the space could be filled by Lulu.com, a fast-growing venture he started in 2002 that helps people publish their own books. It's unlikely that Lulu will move its headquarters from Morrisville, he said. But the space might work for a spinoff. "Lulu continues to come across new and interesting opportunities, some of which we will do as part of our core organization and some of which we will spin out," he said.

^Nice...I was hoping someone would buy that building. The land may have issues, but as a building, it's a solid, brick building in good shape with large windows. And, of course, there's the iconic sign...no way the sign would pass current zoning regulations, but hopefully they could get a variance for historic value or something to leave the sign in place...
Hillsborough Street would lose a little of its soul if the big yellow bulldozer goes away. 6/7/2007 11:44:18 PM |

In other news, looks like we've lost Raleigh Joe's. I won't say it was really good bbq, but it wasn't bad either. Some of the sides were good as well...the hot subs weren't bad...
I actually can't think of anywhere else on Hillsborough that serves fried okra, either.
And yes--the power lines are one of the MAJOR things that make Hillsborough Street so ugly. I think they're supposed to bury the power lines down by the Bell Tower in the improvements that recently got put through; hopefully they'll go all the way to the Gorman intersection eventually. 6/9/2007 8:45:55 PM |

Quote : | "There will be a public hearing Wednesday, August 15th at 5:00 p.m. to review the preliminary roundabout design for the intersection of Morgan and Hillsborough St.
The roundabout is part of a greater project that will convert Morgan Street to a two-way street.
During the first hour of the meeting, the design consultant PBS&J and city staff will be available to answer questions. There will be maps displaying the projects’ preliminary design and scope. After the first hour there will be a brief project overview.
Those attending will also be given a project informational handout on which you can make comments to submit either at the meeting or by mail.
The meeting will be in downtown Raleigh at 222 W. Hargett Street in the Avery C. Upchurch Municipal Complex, room 305.
This is a great opportunity to not only review the plans but to voice any concerns about the project, such as the issue of bicycle accessibility that has been discussed on here previously. " |

Public hearings? Opportunity to voice concerns? Do they really need more meetings for that. An individual roundabout isn't that big of a deal. This project will go over budget on meeting times alone before it even really gets started. I'm all for this project, but its time to move towards the action phase... considering revamping hillsborough st has been going on for years now. 8/14/2007 5:43:18 PM |

i was looking at the map of this area and i don't see why if they're going to make Morgan a two-way street, why they don't just turn it a little more and have it intersect at a right angle with hillsborough street and put a stoplight there? seems like it would be a lot less trouble. 8/14/2007 5:49:27 PM |

Yeah, from my freshman year at NCSU in Fall of 1998, until graduating year.....there really hasnt been taht many changes aesthetically speaking....
the plusses ___________
-Two guys Pizza -The bookstore which was cheaper then the NCSU bookstore -taht really out of place and fancy restaurant on Hillsborough street that really didnt fit in but served good food
the minuses ___________ -the crappy pot holes on Hillsborough st....i mean come on...can someone re-pave the whole fucking road! -all the buildings look the same -traffic does kind of suck for pedestrians
**I wonder if it would help if there was a pedestrian ramp which went from the Library, and two other places from camps to the other side of Hillsborough St., that way the students could get to the other businesses of interest, and the numerous daily traffic.
Maybe one day when my kids are freshman at NCSU, Hillsborough ST. will look differently... 8/15/2007 10:55:23 PM |
