^^ yep, I was about to post the same thing.
Oh and I don't give two shits about what their fans think. They have the WORST and most ignorant fans in all of college athletics. God, they are annoying... Mark my words, they will NEVER enjoy the success in football they had under TOB again. I guarantee it.

Oh, and by the fucking way, that bar fight you were referring to, the kid was getting heckled for his shitty on the field play and went off on some people. Can you picture Chuck siding with one of his babies when they would do that?
You know what O'Brien did, he suspended the kid INDEFINITELY.

So what? We're the fucking bad guys...who cares? Obviously not John Swofford, and BC fans don't.
Quote : | "- bc fans are ecstatic. i wonder why?" |
Maybe because they are horrible fans. BC had had great years in the past few seasons(compared to historically...compared to NC State, compared to almost anything but top tier programs) and Bc fans have shown little support. I care more about wins than fan opinion.
Quote : | "- out outgoing coach, chuck amato (3-9), beat o'brien this year. we won because instead of sealing the game with a short field goal, o'brien decided to try and convert on 4th and 3 with a fullback offtackle play. his fullback was just coming off a shouler injury, and reinjured the same shoulder earlier in the game. this blunder left 42 seconds on the gameclock, and he allowed us to drive the field for a game winning touchdown. " |
Yes and coaches should be based on single games. And head to head coaching matchups definitely determine the better coach. Chuck Amato is a better coach than both Tom O'Brian and Bobby Bowden.
Quote : | "- a couple of years ago, bc could've gotten a bcs bowl bid (a first for o'brien) by simply beating syracuse, a horrible football team. bc and o'brien choked. " |
WE're fucking 3-9. I'll take BCS bowl contention for 100 Alex.
Quote : | "- those are examples of what bc fans have dubbed "wtf games". he has a couple of these every year. " |
you find me a coach where fans agree 100% with what the coach does and I'll quit TWW.
Quote : | "butch davis, unc's new head coach, is 4-0 versuse tom o'brien. unc is our biggest rival, and losing to them has been a primary factor for the firing of our previous two coaches." |
Yeah, but when were those 4 games. Just because Butch beat TOB at MIAMI in their hayday doesn't mean Butch will beat TOB at UNC. Last I checked, coaches don't win games, the teams do. Can you even conceed that maybe that 0-4 record against Butch has something to do with the teams they coached?
Quote : | "o'brien has no recruiting ties in north carolina nor the southeast. now, he is expected to compete with 4 other division 1a schools in the state, 3 of which are our near neighbors. he'll be hitting the recruiting trails against unc's butch davis, an experienced recruiter of the area; jim grobe, who's wake forest team just won the conference title; philip fulmer (tenn.); steve spurrier (south car.); tommy bowden (clemson); bobby bowden (fsu); mark richt (georgia); and miami's new coach. " |
Sounds to me like that's what you might want in a new coach...someone with ties outside NC. Similar to Amato, O'Brien will recruit from other regions along with NC to compete.
Quote : | "his lack of charisma and stoic personality isn't going to help him much on the recruiting trails. not saying the guy needs to be boistrious, but he is a saltine cracker." |
Right, cause Chuck the Charisma sure won us lots of game in recent years. Charisma isn't everything, and you can't hire a perfect coach. I'll take coaching ability over charisma every time.
I'm stopping here cause I'm tired of this shit. All I see is complaining...no one has yet to come up with a better hire. Your argument about why he is going to suck here is on shaky ground at best.12/7/2006 12:04:33 PM |

He WON in a major conference in the recruiting wasteland that is New England. He always recruited NJ pretty well (which is a hotbed though Schiano might be getting that on lockdown). The draw of our facilities alone will make his classes that much better.
Anyone doubting his ability to coach only needs to look at our respective win/loss records (NCSU versus BCU) and the caliber recruiting classes. This is a MAJOR upgrade and I, for one, am ecstatic about it.
I think it's rather pathetic that people will not give him a chance. I NEVER want to hear any of these people who are saying they want him fired already (which in itsel fis one of the dumber things I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of dumb things) say ANYTHING to anyone who might have a criticism for Coach Lowe. If they do everyone will know they are hypocrites at least..

I think we're all (the haters) upset for a couple of reasons:
1) He's not Cowher. Dumb as everyone KNEW it was, we all hoped for it just a tiny bit. So it sucks that a Christmas miracle didn't happen to us.
2) He'll never win a NC. For some reason, State fans love hope. It's why we like Sidney better than TOB, thought TOB is likely to have a much higher winning percentage. Face the facts: TOB resembles Herb in the biggest, most painful way: he'll plateau and likely never win the big games. So even when we are at 8-3 w/ a big bowl coming up, UNC fans in the office will still say "Ah, you know TOB can't win big, you guys will never get over the hump."
3) Nothing to look forward to. Sure, we *KNOW* we're gonna win 7, 8, maybe 9 games a year from now 'til kingdom come -- so? Nobody likes to KNOW what you're going to do, escp. if that doesn't end in a NC. There's no surprises in TOB, we basically know precisely what to expect, and we know exactly what not to expect (amazing things, which State fans like to dream for).
I like the hire, simply because none of the other candidates (minus Cowher) could take us to a NC either. We're NC State folks, we aren't Miami or FSU or even Louisville, so we get what we get. 12/7/2006 12:41:05 PM |

He has disciplined football teams and always at least has the opportunity at the end of the season to win the ACC. What in the hell have we had the opportunity at the end of our seasons lately--get a head start on our tremendous recruiting classes--the ones that dont even end up in the top twenty-five. Quote : | "Pre-2006 season report on TOB...
From BC Football www:
Innovator. Motivator. Disciplinarian. Program rebuilder. Now in his 10th season as the Gregory P. Barber and Family Head Football Coach at Boston College, Tom O'Brien has led the BC football program to new heights by instilling his values of integrity, honesty and hard work.
With a record of 66-42, O'Brien is just two wins shy of the school record for most wins by a head coach (Joe Yukica, 68). He became BC's 32nd head football coach in December of 1996 and has since engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent college football history by building a program that:
-Won the American Football Coaches' Association's 2004 Academic Achievement Award with a 100% graduation rate and received Honorable Mention status seven additional times during his tenure.
-Was ranked number one in the country by USA Today when the paper re-ordered the final 2005 football Top 25 by APR (Academic Progress Rate) score to measure a combination of athletic and academic success.
-Has won nine games for the third time in four years; eight or more games for the fifth year in a row and sixth time in seven years; and seven or more games for a school-record seventh year in a row.
-Finished 5-3 in their first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, tying eventual champion Florida State for first place in the league's Atlantic Division.
-Went to a school-record seventh consecutive bowl game and won its sixth in a row (27-21 over Boise State in the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl), the longest active bowl game winning streak in the country.
O'Brien's 2005 BC team was the first since 1984 to be ranked in the top 25 in at least one of the two major polls from start to finish. The team finished 17th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, its highest finish in that poll since 1993 (12th). It finished 18th in the final Associated Press poll, its highest finish in that poll 1993 (13th). The Eagles finished 12th in the final Sagarin rankings, which take into account win/loss record and strength of schedule. According to the rankings, the Eagles played the 22nd-most-difficult schedule in the country in 2005. Only Virginia Tech (5th) finished higher in the Sagarin rankings among ACC teams.
The team became the 11th in BC history to win nine or more games in a season; three of those seasons have come under Tom O'Brien. The 2005 senior class won 35 games, the most in the modern era of BC football history. The 35 wins also ties for the best four-year mark in school history (1939-42). The Eagles have now strung together the most successful five, six and seven-year periods in school history.
The 2005 Eagles led the ACC in total offense, averaging 387.8 yards per game, and also led the league in rushing defense (90.8 ypg.). Mathias Kiwanuka was named Preseason ACC Player of the Year and Will Blackmon finished his career second on the NCAA's all-time kick return yardage list. BC was one of six Division I-A institutions with a football graduation rate of 90% or better, along with Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Southern Methodist and Southern Mississippi.
The 2004 Eagles claimed a share of their first-ever Big East football title, finishing with a league record of 4-2 and an overall 9-3 record, which included an impressive 37-24 win over North Carolina in the Continental Tire Bowl. The team also notched impressive road wins at No. 24 Notre Dame (24-23), the Eagles' fourth consecutive victory over the Irish, and at No. 10 West Virginia (36-17).
O'Brien's 2003 team notched impressive road wins over No. 25 Penn State and No. 12 Virginia Tech and finished 8-5 after their 35-21 victory over Colorado State in the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl. The 2002 Eagles finished with a 9-4 record, including a 51-25 win over Toledo in the Motor City Bowl and a victory over the previously undefeated, No. 4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Notre Dame Stadium. The 2001 season was a gratifying one for O'Brien as well. BC's stunning 20-16 victory over No. 16 Georgia in the Music City Bowl capped an 8-4 record and a top 25 finish in both major polls for the first time in seven years.
The 2000 Eagles posted a record of 7-5 under O'Brien, including an impressive 31-17 win over Arizona State in the Aloha Bowl. In 1999, three years of hard work paid off for O'Brien, his staff and his players as they engineered the third-best turnaround in Division I college football. Led by Minnesota Vikings' first-round draft pick and All-American Hovan, the Eagles registered impressive back-to-back-to-back wins over Syracuse, West Virginia and Notre Dame to finish the regular season with an 8-3 record, a top 25 national ranking and a trip to the Insight.com Bowl -- BC's first bowl appearance since 1994.
O'Brien's first two Eagles teams posted 4-7 records that included wins over Georgia Tech and West Virginia. He coached Mike Cloud to the Boston College all-time rushing record and first-team All-America honors. Cloud was a second-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs while center Damien Woody was selected in the first round by the New England Patriots and offensive guard Doug Brzezinski was picked in the third round by the Philadelphia Eagles.
When he came to Boston College, O'Brien set out to make his teams champions in the classroom, on the field and in the community. His record in all three areas speaks for itself. On a personal note, O'Brien was recently named to the Board of Directors of the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots Foundation and received the John F. Kennedy Memorial National Award, given to "an outstanding American of Irish descent for distinguished service to God and country" in 2005.
Before coming to BC, O'Brien was the coordinator of the record-setting University of Virginia offense for six seasons and a member of the highly regarded Cavaliers' football staff since 1982. Virginia was consistently ranked among the top offensive teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference in recent years. The Cavaliers scored 320 points during the 1996 regular season to become the first ACC team to score at least 300 points in eight consecutive years.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, O'Brien, 55, played at St. Xavier High School in that city. In 1987, he was inducted into the St. Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame -- one of the youngest graduates ever selected to join fellow alumni such as Baseball Hall-of-Famer Jim Bunning and Notre Dame All-American quarterback George Ratterman in the school's place of honor. He later enjoyed a fine collegiate career at Navy, where he was a three-year starter at defensive end for the Midshipmen from 1968-70.
Following his graduation from the Naval Academy in 1971, O'Brien was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marines. He served as an assistant coach for Navy's plebe (freshman) team for one season before being assigned to the Quantico Marine Base in Virginia, where he played on the last Quantico football team. He later served tours of duty in California and Japan. He attained the rank of major in the Marine Corps Reserve.
When his active duty ended, O'Brien joined the football staff at Navy where he coached the team's tackles and tight ends for seven years (1975-81). He was also the Mids' recruiting coordinator, and was responsible for All-America and Hall of Fame running back Napoleon McCallum's decision to attend the Naval Academy.
O'Brien joined the University of Virginia staff prior to the 1982 campaign. He coached the Cavaliers' guards and centers before being promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in the spring of 1991.
Following Virginia's 1994 season, he switched from quarterbacks coach to offensive line coach while remaining as offensive coordinator.
O'Brien and his wife, the former Jennifer Byrd of San Diego, are the parents of three children: Colleen Frances, a 2002 Boston College graduate who works for ESPN; Daniel Patrick, a 2005 BC graduate who is on the Harvard football staff; and Bridget Jean, also a 2005 BC graduate who will finish a year-long mission with the Rostro de Cristo program in Ecuador this coming year.
