GAME ON.
I still ain't buying either one until one format is the clear winner.
I really don't care which one it is. 4/27/2007 9:06:27 AM |

this will be the eventual solution...since blu-ray is the more expensive component and APPEARS to be pulling ahead, it seems to me that they'll eventually just create dual players since adding on hd-dvd capabilities would be relatively cheap4/27/2007 11:12:44 AM |

Quote : | "HD DVD: 'Still Very Much in the Game' By Ed Oswald, BetaNews April 25, 2007, 9:07 PM
The public relations melee between HD DVD and Blu-ray continued Wednesday as supporters of HD DVD were quick to point out their own successes.
So far, 998,059 HD DVD discs have been sold, according to the HD DVD Promotional Group. This is about 2,000 shy of the total publicized by Blu-ray on Monday. It also disputed claims that Blu-ray was building an insurmountable lead.
"As more HD DVD titles hit the market and as prices for HD DVD hardware continue to drop below the $400 mark, we're seeing more equal week to week movie sales ratios between the formats," a spokesperson told BetaNews.
Presales for titles of The Matrix Trilogy and BBC Video's documentary Planet Earth show strength for the format, it argued.
In addition, it took issue with the inclusion of PlayStation 3 as a Blu-ray player in overall statistics. When true set-top boxes are compared, HD DVD claims it is still maintaining its 4-to-1 margin over its rival. It explained that it does so because it's easier to compare attach rates with similar hardware.
"Bottom line is that HD DVD is staying focused across the board on creating great products at great prices," the spokesperson added. " |

While obviously not every user of a PS3 will use the blu-ray player for movies, to not count a single one is a pretty funny way to skew the statistics in your favor. 4/27/2007 1:48:33 PM |

I guess he wasn't so quick to point out that Blu-Ray has been around for a lot less time than HD-DVD and if they were having such great success, they wouldn't already be behind BR after just 5 real months of BR sales. 4/27/2007 2:25:18 PM |

i think it says a lot for HD-DVD that they are not far behind with fewer titles to offer. 4/27/2007 3:00:08 PM |

while both of these statements are true, they are only applicable in a small sense. consider this, PS3 is not the mainstream DVD market. if you look at the mainstream DVD market, which format are they choosing? obviously you are going to look at the number of standalone players sold.
going back to this quote:
Quote : | "Happy Feet [DVD], which moved over 4 million units that week alone" |
It's estimated that ~1.1 million PS3's have been sold since launch (in US ~5 months). Even if each person owned FOUR blu-ray DVD's that's clearly not even a drop in the bucket when compared to how many DVD's the "general public" purchase in a week.
I'm not for either format, just playing devil's advocate...
Honestly this isn't over by a LONG SHOT. The real victor is who wins the price war.

^ Last I read the PS3 was the highest rated blu-ray player for quality, easy of use, etc and was also the cheapest so I think people have been effectively buying it as a stand alone player. But this is not really something that can be easily measured so who knows how much that actually happens.
Also your sales statistic is pretty off for PS3s but I understand the point you are trying to make (DVD sales are so much higher right now). 4/27/2007 4:47:09 PM |

latest #'s I could find on PS3 total sales in US, because i was under the impression the 4-million stat came from the US version of Happy Feet DVD, but i have no basis for that

BluRay has all the content people want at a price they'll tolerate.
HD-DVD has their players at a slightly more tolerate price point.

There have been rumblings recently that Universal is thinking about jumping ship (the HD-DVD exclusivity ship, that is). It would make sense for them financially, b/c I'm sure they can make a lot more money off Blu-Ray sales than whatever incentive they're getting to remain HD-DVD exclusive.
I hope this is true b/c there are lots of good Universal movies. If they do, it's basically lights out for HD-DVD. 5/23/2007 11:23:31 AM |

hd-dvd players are still waaaaaaaaaay cheaper than blu-ray, but $vermont when you can't even afford (or refuse to pay) $rhodeisland is a moot point, to say nothing of $missouri 5/23/2007 12:30:22 PM |
