Great article by Jason Whitlock, I think he nails it.

Well, you're a fucking idiot, then.

When the Imus scandal broke the team held a press conference to reply to it. How many people could hold a proper press conference, podium and all, without hiring a PR firm and paying them five figures (for starters)?

These women play a televised sport for a major University. And if they were wildly successful, they'd have no problem with the news media coming to their homes and doing biographies on them. In this situation, they had no clue that public exposure meant the likes of Don Imus would be watching.

Newsweek did an interesting analysis of this. Normally, when he abuses people, he's smacking around politicians, members of the press, and other political elites. In return, he gives them a surprisingly free block of time to make their points though he does a good job asking some serious, piercing questions.

The problem was that this time, he wasn't picking on a politician. He was picking on the tournament's cinderella team, a darling of the press. Add into that a few groups that had an axe to grind and were more than happy to keep Imus in the headlines of the 24 hour news cycle, and its only natural that he's going down. As people already pointed out, picking on a bunch of 18-20 year olds who worked so hard is not the wisest thing.

I do think it was racially charged too. Its not just those words, but he used them to contrast against a described white Tennessee team.

the spiritual adviser of the Rutgers team (a black reverend) is actually on Imus' side. He is glad that Imus apologized and accepted his apology. You know..the things that reverends are suppose to do...pay attention Sharpton

btw...does anyone else think the story about Sharpton having to increase his security because of the Imus incident totally bogus?

I do too, I think he'll end up winning. NBC knew full well what he was capable of.

Not giving into is lawsuit is another publicity stunt - just like firing him was.

If CBS hired Imus to be "irreverent," then they got what they were paying for. The following is apparently from Imus' contract:

Quote :
"[Imus' lawyer] cited a contract clause where CBS acknowledged that Imus' services were 'unique, extraordinary, irreverent, intellectual, topical, controversial.' The clause said Imus's programming was 'desired by company and ... consistent with company rules and policy,' according to Garbus."
