another thing that irked me was the lack of a side quest in this one like at the beginning of last crusade and raiders
instead they just throw him(literally) into the main action of the film 5/23/2008 2:53:07 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
There are also no issues of confidence here. Indy was never fully confident in his actions in the earlier movies, and now that he's old and slow, he knows exactly what he's doing? I never felt like any of the heroes were in real danger.

in the Film, Indy explains that he spent some time spying on the Russians ...
That would have been a pretty good one.
Or maybe if the movie was just about finding El Dorado. 5/23/2008 8:26:59 PM |

I didn't like it too much
A lot of people still Harrison Ford is a great actor
But look at his movies since 1995
# Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) .... Indiana Jones # Firewall (2006) .... Jack Stanfield # Water to Wine (2004) (V) (as Jethro the Bus Driver) .... Jethro the Bus Driver # Hollywood Homicide (2003) .... Sgt. Joe Gavilan # K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) .... Alexei Vostrikov ... aka K*19: The Widowmaker (USA: poster title) ... aka K-19 - Showdown in der Tiefe (Germany) ... aka K-19: Terreur sous la mer (Canada: French title) # What Lies Beneath (2000) .... Dr. Norman Spencer
# Random Hearts (1999) .... Sergeant William 'Dutch' Van Den Broeck # Six Days Seven Nights (1998) .... Quinn Harris ... aka 6 Days 7 Nights # Air Force One (1997) .... President James Marshall ... aka AFO ... aka Air Force One (Germany) # The Devil's Own (1997) .... Tom O'Meara # Sabrina (1995) .... Linus Larrabee
Air Force one was pretty good, and What Lies beneath was OK
but other than those, he's been in a lot of crappy movies in the last decade and a half
He stopped being a great actor in the early 90's 5/23/2008 8:46:06 PM |

Being 2008 they tried waaaay too hard with the fight scenes where they really didn't need to. The cgi stuff got a tad old and they took the "twist" (you all that I have seen it know what I mean) too far.
What I did like very very much was how they paid homage to the originals. It needed a better or at least more snake jokes/references. 5/23/2008 9:39:52 PM |

God hates Nazis.
Anyway, I like how the ending used the bit from Raiders (human seeks knowledge beyond our understanding, body can't handle said knowledge and is destroyed) and Last Crusade (greedy guy bites it yearning for one last bit of treasure).
No, wait...that's why I hated it.
There's nothing clever in this fucking movie. When a bunch of Nazis pull guns on Indy in the Cairo cafe, Sallah sends in a bunch of kids to cover Indy and get him out of trouble. It's silly and cheap, but it works and makes you smile. When a bunch of bloodthirsty natives or bloodthirsty ants or bloodthirsty Reds (oh, wait, they're not affected by mystical powers like fucking ANTS are...isn't the point of the Reds getting the skull so that they can use its power against other civilized humans?) are chasing the gang in this movie, they just unleash the magical skull and it makes everything better.
CATCHALL ESCAPE PLANS ARE NOT CLEVER, OR COOL, OR FUN TO WATCH.
I can live with Spielberg making Kate Capshaw Indy's love interest without any real buildup in the first quarter of the movie. It's his wife, he loves her, he wanted her to be a leading lady in a serial-style piece...I get it. I can't live with George Lucas yelling, "ALIENS ARE COOL! IT'S THE FIFTIES! I OWN A CGI COMPANY!"
P.S. As far as not building up a love interest goes, there was no build here. The only reason we care about Marion in this movie is because she's Marion. Really, there's none of the fire that was there in Raiders, but just like everything else in this movie, we coast on nostalgia.

I can agree with what you're saying, but I say you're putting the "trilogy" on too high of a pedestal to not find anything redeeming in this new one (and clearly by saying you hated it). Sentimentalists have NO place with the Spielberg/Lucas clique; you should know that.
I doubt kids these days don't give a shit about the other Indy movies. It's sad, I know, but still... 5/23/2008 10:40:46 PM |

Yikes, I gotta say I was disappointed. First of all, wtf was with the vine swinging/monkeys? At what point did Mutt cease to be Mutt and turn into fucking Spider-Man? And the monkeys? Suddenly they decide that they are gonna follow the orders of him?
And the prairie dogs at the beginning were a little unnecessary.
Also, aliens? In an Indiana Jones movie? Come on now, this isn't Star Wars.
And why didn't it have the main theme music at the very beginning?
This movie would have been alright if it hadn't been in the shadow of the original three, but as an Indiana Jones movie, it has a certain standard that it is expected to live up to. It just seemed to lack the sense of adventure that the original three had. 5/23/2008 11:20:42 PM |

Peter Travers summed up what I was looking for in a film that re-connects an iconic character with his best female foil:
Quote : | "I'd trade all the paranormal mumbo-jumbo and cutesy computer-generated prairie dogs for scenes that connected the characters on a human level. There was a chance here to show Indy getting smacked by time and the perils of intimacy and commitment. But those stunts leave real bruises." |
It's gotten to the point that I'm so mad about this one it's going to piss me off the next time I watch Raiders. ]5/24/2008 10:40:25 AM |
