that's basically it. don't hold it at any one rpm for more than a 20-30 seconds. a few full throttle pulls here and there up to ~75% of the rpm range is good too. go through 4-5 complete heat cycles (cold to hot back to cold) before giving it hell. that's the most important thing imo.

you'll get varying opinions on the other stuff, some people say run the hell out of them from the start, some people have a long drawn out specific process. i know of no concrete evidence that supports either way being decidedly better as long as it's heat cycled properly and not allowed to run at constant rpm for an extended period of time within the first few hours of operation. metallurgy and oil technology has come a long way in the past 10-20 years. break in procedures aren't as critical as they used to be.

As for four strokes, the break in process is a little different. You shouldn't spend much time in wide-open throttle for the first 50 miles or so. You should also change the oil after each of the first three rides. It might sound like a bit much, but you will be surprised at the amount of shavings/ metal slurry that comes out the motor. Best option for helping ensure a long, reliable engine life.

^ i've never heard of anything so strict...just keep it below 75% throttle for the first 250 miles, change the oil, drive it normally, change again at 500, you're good to go (from there on, every 1k or whenever your manual says to)

Well, the forums I frequent recommend it, and I'm glad I did. I ride Hondas, and because of the cost, I take a much more precautionary approach to maintenance. The tolerances are closer and the quality of manufacture is much better. It's also more costly to fix. I also have a magnetic oil drain plug that catches metallic sediment, which is important because scooters generally don't have oil filters. Like I said, buy a new scoot, change the oil after you run it around a few miles and see what comes out.

thanks BigBlueRam, break in has been pretty straight so far on mine.

except i lost the head/exhaust gasket somewhere on gardner street had to limp the piece of shit home after that. lol. does scootersinc stock exhaust gaskets.. maybe even exhaust bolts.. well i just need a new gasket im sure burke brothers can hook me up on some nice bolts.

60cc big-bore '03 honda metropolitan...though "ride" isn't really correct (it had 17k miles on it before the bore, and now it's got about 18k)

after the bore it wasn't any faster and it started to act flaky, so i decided to replace the drive belt, drive spring, and clutch springs to see if that would fix it...now it won't turn over...thinking, maybe, that with the big-bore and tight new gear, the battery isn't strong enough to start it up...the bolt that keeps the kickstart on broke off inside the kickstart itself, so i have to drill that out and put in a new bolt before i can see if kickstarting it will work

also "ride" an '86 honda rebel 250 (admittedly tiny, but big enough to go faster than my saturn ) that needs a new head gasket (which should be here today or tomorrow)

HOPEFULLY, the 110cc PGM-FI honda click-i will be here by the end of this month :

^^ it's a 4-stroke...i got it at about 16k miles from the wife of a guy on here (i can never remember his user name )...it lasted those 2k just fine, but then it blew a seal somewhere and started to leak oil and overheat...i got the big bore from chanito (http://www.chanitomotor.com/) and tripleD4u did the re-bore, install, and replaced all the seals (so it's almost a new engine)

but yeah...there are a couple of people on http://www.urbanscootin.com/ with 25-30k miles on a metropolitan...i believe the only thing replaced on the met before i bought it was a tire and a battery...everything else was stock

theres an old drunk nagger that rides a tomos scooter back home, he brought it in to dad's shop for a tune up and it had 80k miles on a two stroke, and he just carried around a bottle of oil and dumped some in when he filled up

My skoot can't deal with the 14.5mm carb anymore, leans out up top, even with a 90 jet. but i hear this is pretty typical.

I can get a full on racing carb for mine for 120 bucks.

I can get a big bore kit for 120 on up..

it's a fun thing to do, it's very easy to do everything yourself. a nice learning experience.

shit well, that's what i like about them. and the whole license part helps out too hahaha

it's like sticking it to the man on these fuckers.. no regis. or insur. required. passing cars is fun too.

oh yeah, u can park them wherever the fuck u want. no on tickets a skoot skoot. what are they going to do, leave a ticket and hope u pay it (no regis. no ins.)

i bought mine on a good deal just before gas prices skyrocketed...even with my saturn getting 30+mpg, i broke even before gas prices started to fall back again by riding my scooter to class/work every day that was feasible (no rain, not obnoxiously cold, etc.)...every time i ride it now, it's money in my pocket saved on gas (though admittedly not as much now as it was), not to mention the less wear and tear on my car

my commute when i bought my scooter was about 7 miles...now it's 2...i can pull right up to the building and park wherever i want (and when i'm on campus, that's a big deal)...for the most part, i can keep up with traffic (there is a single 45mph stretch where i start to fall behind), but i can go around cars when i'm stuck behind someone waiting to make a left turn (things like that...obviously, each situation is different so you have to be careful not to do something stupid)

no insurance or taxes is a bonus, though since i have a motorcycle license anyway, that doesn't really matter (i guess if i ever lost it, i'd be glad to have the scooter)...i'm not mechanically inclined, so working on the scooter has been a learning experience (and it's a lot cheaper to buy replacement parts for that than a car)

above all, though, it's FUN...in my experience, it's harder to ride a scooter than a motorcycle (not that either is "hard", but a scooter feels more maneuverable than any motorcycle at the same speed (i'm not talking about weaving in and out of traffic...it just responds more to your body since it's so much smaller...IMO, at least)
