I can see how the time instead of distance workout would be better because as you get faster, you are spending less time to run the same distance. You could also adjust better based on how you're feeling that day.

I'm not going to switch, though, because I'm addicted to using my Garmin Forerunner and hitting my target paces and distances every time I'm out

Would any group of people be down for setting up a run this weekend. perhaps even in the morning. I would like to do 6 miles, maybe more. I typically only do 4.25 because my girlfriend swears she can't run any farther than that. I feel a good 6 mile, hour or so, run would be goo and a decent way to get out especially if its not too hot.

I wouldn't mind doing that, but I doubt I could keep up. I was out for... maybe 40 minutes and only went 2.9ish miles.

Do you all think I should do anything differently since I've torn my ACL? (the accident happend 6/4/08 and surgery was 7/31/08, so it's coming up on a year). I'm guessing just go by how I feel and if something hurts then stop. It's usually only sore after and only sometimes bothers me while I go. We'll see I suppose.

And I'll look into getting some shoes

Well, I was saying she could probably get a good pair of shoes for $70+ . Of course, you can go cheaper and get serviceable shoes, but having run distances in good shoes and ok shoes, good shoes are well worth the money--particularly when she has a history of knee problems.

Good equipment doesn't come cheap.

What else?

Of course I do. The problem with slickdeals and clearances in general for something as important as a running shoe is that unless you get incredibly lucky, it's going to be difficult to find a shoe that properly fits, suits your running style/gait, and is not just a cheap stylish piece of shit from reebok or something.

Not to mention, I'd rather go to a store and have something fitted to me. Try it on first, get feedback, talk to people that KNOW what they're talking about.
THEN, if I know exactly what I need, I shop around about prices.

This thread is very much not full of shit. IMHO.

Ninth St. Active Feet in Durham was where I got my current pair of running shoes for training. I got my Etonic Jeparas on sale for 85 and so far they've been great- I'm an overpronator and the shoes are cushioned yet light, and have a rocker toe to help stride break-over. The customer service was also excellent.

They also have a small supply of other athletic stuff (swim gear, etc.), for those cross-training as well.

^^ I so would, but I've only just started running. I can only go about 2 miles without stopping. I don't think I could up it to 6 miles in 2 weeks lol.

I wish I had started running earlier. Sadness

Thoughts!

So it's small, but I might register for the Komen Race for the Cure--it's only 5k. It's small, but something to work towards! I wonder if I could get Raleigh Orthopaedics Clinic to sponsor me? Have a former patient that went through ACL surgery and rehab running for them...

How do you go about doing that? Say they agree, do they register as a sponsor and I can register under them, or do they do it all or what??

Excitement!

how long (usually) does it take to train for a marathon and 1/2 marathon (respectively obviously i am not trying to train for both, just curious)?

has anyone ever worked with the leukemia and lymphoma society team in training?

is anyone running in this http://www.cityofoaksmarathon.com/?

i'm thinking of registering for the 1/2 marathon and raising money for the leukemia/lymphoma society. should i register for the marathon instead? that scares me i don't think i can. i've only ever run a 5K before (in a race, i've run probably like 6 miles at once before), but i am a healthy individual and used to swim very competitively. running isn't AS much my thing but i really want to do it.

thoughts/suggestions? is 5ish months enough time to get ready for a 1/2 marathon? i would assume so. some schedules i've looked at for training are ~3 months (12 wks) so i figure since i'm probably a little out of shape, if i have extra time i might be ok?

oh and does anyone participate in any running clubs around raleigh?

I would recommend starting with the half marathon and training for about 16 weeks prior. Go to runnersworld.com click on tool and then go to smart coach. Fill in your data and it will give you a pretty solid work out routine with speedwork and tempo runs. I lead a run group out of TrySports every Wednesday night at 6. Come out and join us. Run Happy.

assuming you are already in decent running shape, you need about 4 months of specific-marathon training. If you're not running regularly now, or can't do 25+ miles/week easily and without getting injured, then you need to get in good enough shape for that before starting a 4 month program.

For a half-marathon, again depending on what kind of shape you're already in and what your goal for the race is, it could be considerably less. There is a huge difference between a half and a full marathon. Anyone who is already in decently good shape can run a half - it just depends on how fast. The more you specifically train for it, the faster you will go. But if you are already a runner who can get through 10-11 mile long runs already, then you can do a half. If you attempt a full marathon without being fully prepared, though (able to do 18-21 mile long runs without too much discomfort), the race will be hell.

there's some marathon advice back on page 4. Here are several good marathon training guides

ok thanks

yea i'm definitely going to do the 1/2. i might never run a whole marathon, those scare me. but i feel like i wouldn't completely die if i ran a 1/2 right this instant, although it might take me 6 hours. so i should probably start training now (specifically) for the 1/2 and just try for a decent (not great) time in my first non-5K race??

i think it is a good plan. i mean if i can't successfully run a 1/2 marathon after training for 6 months then i guess i'm just not meant to be a runner.

12 weeks is the "standard" training time for a half marathon for people who can already run 3-4 miles

im on week 2 of a 12 week program. i have my second half marathon at the end of july. the program i'm doing (hal higdon) http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm

its pretty reasonable. i did my first half marathon having never ran more than 6 miles and certainly not 6 miles without stopping and i finished in just under 3 hours

im taking the second one a little more seriously.. especially since you get kicked out of the race if you're not making pace. and you only have 3 hours to do the whole thing, the first one gave you 4 hours.

just fyi, if you're going to get any respect in any running circles, you're going to have to drop the MPH business and instead think in terms of pace (min/mile).

oh, I know. I just run on a treadmill so I don't so much think about min/mile. more to think about in my head. that and it pisses me off to no end the bullshit I have to do to excel to get it to show the mile time all pretty like

ok good. your whole post makes me feel better. i can def run 3-4 miles right now. maybe slow, but i can. i'm not sure if you get kicked out of the race that i wanna do in november if you aren't on pace but i mean i guess you eventually do because its the same deal--only 3 hours to finish. so i definitely need to be quasi serious. i don't care if i finish at like 2:59, but i guess i kinda need to be under 3 hours.

figured this might be a good thread to ask

what is a reasonable price range to look at for treadmills? Not for a serious marathon runner.. but somebody who just wants a convenient place to walk/jog for like an hour a day just to stay active

I don't want to get a piece of shit but then again, I don't want some top of the line treadmill that ends up being a complete waste of money... I was thinking something like $500-750, is that about right

I've never known anyone who can consistently run on a treadmill over the long term unless they were at a gym and it was part of a larger workout plan.

I know lots of people that have a 700 dollar clothes hanger at their house, though. I'd recommend getting an ipod and getting outside--especially this time of year while it is nice out.

it's actually for the girlfriend who can only go outside to walk/run if its just the right exact temperature/humidity level outside....

there aren't many decent gyms conveniently located to where we live either so that would be a hassle... it would be a gamble actually buying her one and hoping it got used enough but I'm pretty sure she hasn't been lying to me all this time about wanting one

^^^^^I would recommend a nordic track. I bought one 6 or 7 years ago at sears for ~$1k and we have had no problems with it and it has been run on PLENTY.

A good way to test them to make sure they have plenty of lubrication under the belt (for new and used treadmills) is to put the incline as high as it can go, stand at the top, hold on to the bars on each side and try to push yourself off with one push. If the belt takes you all the way to the bottom and off, it's well lubricated. If it stops short, it needs lubrication. The only reason i say this is b/c it's a good way to test yours if you have one, or test a new one. Some of the cheaper ones aren't well lubricated, which will put more strain on your motor causing it to go out quicker.

Mine goes about 3/4 of the way down after 7 years of use. Not too bad. I plan on going to Lowes and getting silicon spray to spray underneath the belt. If i get another 3 year out of it i'll be happy.

oh btw on running a half marathon--- make sure you read up on what to expect from the course, the website should tell you if its mostly flat or includes hills

my first half marathon was flat and fast, my second is in san francisco-- hilly. so as part of my training i put the treadmill on a more steep incline and run hills outside when i can. hills can kill you if you're not ready for them

the course i want to/am planning on running is in downtown raleigh so mostly flat. my neighborhood is SUPER hilly. i mean there isn't anything flat. is it bad to train somewhere that is completely different from the course?

i also really don't like my neighborhood because i tried to stay off of main roads, and still felt like i was going to get run over. we don't have sidewalks. the speed limit is 25 and i run against traffic (like you're supposed to) but it is still scary. i might start going to lake lynn (though, call me paranoid, i hate running those courses alone). i guess i could just hit the Y but isn't it better to train not on an elliptical/treadmill? i suppose they have a track i could use.

either way, when i cross train i'm totally swimming. i started out swimming and i don't know WHAT the deal is with swimmers and runners but once you start with one it seems soooo hard to cross over to the other

i was also thinking of running with this group http://www.meetup.com/The-Downtown-Raleigh-Womens-Running-Group/ when i get a little better, of course.

oh - i ran 2 miles today. i wanted to do 3 but the hills are serious business. i guess when i run, i'm used to running on a track. i'll probably stick to the 2 miles for a few more days and then try to bump it up and/or find somewhere else to run.

if you trained on the hills in your neighborhood you'd likely kick the half marathons ass

but train where you feel comfortable. i like to train on a treadmill because its too hot and humid outside and i have NO sidewalks near my house, plus i feel safe at the gym and can listen to my ipod while i run and not worry about getting dragged off into the woods

^^ that is how i feel. maybe i should just run on the track at the gym. i feel safe in my neighborhood, but no sidewalks definitely sucks. i really don't want to get hit by a car.

and running around lakes by myself scurrs me. especially places where people have already been assaulted/raped (which is like ALL of them!).

plus i guess the gym has other stuff i need too like the pool and weights. i just hate having to drive somewhere to work out.

also i need to get some new running shoes! suggestions? right now i'm just using the old standby new balance shoes, but i need some actual running shoes if i am going to be serious

go to a place like fleet feet and get fitted for a pair. its worth the extra time. any place that is legit will look at your feet and put you in some shoes and have you run on a treadmill and tailor what they give you from there.

i went to a spot in austin and spent about 30-45min picking out shoes with the salesguy and they were just over $100, so just because you go to a specialty place doesn't mean you're going to spend significantly more

i'd personally recommend a dry fit type shirt. i have a few and it really does make a difference for me. i dont feel like the hot mess that i used to feel like when i ran in straight up plain tshirts. i picked up some at rei and any running store type place will have them too. they just dry faster so you're not soaking with sweat after a short run

i also like to run with a heart rate monitor because i know when i can push myself and when i need to back it down. it helps me learn the signals my body gives me and i can usually predict what range i'm in without looking now. i got one that does calorie burn too because it gives me some motivation. i got the polar f6 online but there are less expensive versions that dont count calories. but whatever you get, make sure it has a chest strap.

I'm pretty bummed...I've been sidelined for about 3 weeks now with a back injury.

I'm supposed to do the Gary Kirby triathlon in a few weeks...and also signed up for the City of Oaks full marathon in November. Hope my back gets better soon so I can start training again
