^isn't it obvious? the PS3 isn't going to sell as a gaming console with shitty games and no rumble controllers. So they have to push it down your throat as an inexpensive ($400-$500???) blu ray player.

im a Wii owner, and i stand firm on how awesome the system is.

but you cannot compare the Wii to Xbox/PS3.

^^^Well $450 is a lot for a gameless console since well thats its primary function. But $450 for a console with a huge array of hit games (aka xbox360) is well worth it.

lol? Halo 3 is the only xbox360 version of the trilogy. Which wasn't exactly what I was referring to either.

thats like saying "OMG the PS3 is soo cool because it has GT and GT2!!!!"

Same holds true now, just with prices adjusted, of course.

$400 as Sony's best option to watch high definition DVDs? Seriously?

A hundred dollar price drop on both would make HD DVD $100 for an entry level player and Blu-ray $350-$400 for the closest thing to an entry level player (this is assuming they won't price cut the $400 PS3).

I mean, at a hundred dollar price point, how could you even argue against HD DVD?

"The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, for the most part, is an entirely software based implementation. Other players on the market have specialized chips (called DSPs) that decode things like H.264, MPEG, VC1, DTS, Dolby Digital, and other codecs.

All 6 of Xbox 360's hardware threads are hard at work while playing back an HD DVD. At the moment, the player software pushes Xbox 360 harder than any other (save, perhaps, Gears of War during some particularly busy parts of the game).

http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2006/11/03/emergence-day.aspx"

Rather than buying the 360 add-on, this could either be taken as a reason to get a stand-alone HD DVD player, for people (like myself) who are afraid of their 360 overheating.

Quote :
"Now lets move on to the Xbox 360 with HD DVD add-on. The Elite's HDMI port cannot handle 5.1 channels due to hardware limitations, so multi-channel audio can only be sent via S/PDIF. At least you get a choice of which encoder is used to re-encode the audio: WMA Pro, DTS or Dolby Digital. Opinions vary on which is the best choice, but in theory at least the preference is the order I described, assuming your receiver can handle it.

http://blogs.msdn.com/andypennell/archive/2007/06/14/hd-dvd-audio.aspx"

Interesting... I was a bit disappointed to see that the 360 degraded TrueHD signals to 5.1 in the first place. Yes, I understand that most people don't care, however anyone who considers themself an audiophile will want to know this.

HD-DVD will win out, just by the name of it alone. People know what HD is and therefore make the simple connection to HD-DVD without much thought.

restricted technology licensing and expensive components and compensating for expensive disc fabrication and etc. and because they can and it's apparently working out well so far.

Blue Light Special for HD DVD

http://www.betanews.com/article/Kmart_Dumps_Bluray_Due_to_Price/1193854397

The most interesting part of the article though is this:

Quote :
"Surprisingly, Sears may have the best deal of the season, although it only lasts for part of the day after Thanksgiving. Shoppers can pick up the new Toshiba A3 for just $169. The offer includes 7 free HD DVD movies, with 2 in the box and 5 available through a mail-in offer."

I'm pretty sure K-mart isn't going to stop selling PS3s anytime soon, so it's pretty dumb to say they are "dumping" Blu-ray.

Isn't 1080i at 60 frames per second going to give you the same quality at 1080p at 30 frames per?

and at $100 for the player and $14 for the Discs I could "suffer"
