but answer my question first. 4/18/2008 1:09:58 AM |
chembob Yankee Cowboy 27011 Posts user info edit post |
well, being in an ROTC unit, my indoctrination into the military was rather condensed, so I'm not the best source when it comes to this.
but these are the things that any basic military training will do/expect of you:
- Force you into a new mode of thinking - from what I've read and heard and experienced first hand, much of the first stage of training is being hurried around and waiting and being asked to remember more than you can remember and being yelled at through the whole process.
- To instill discipline and make you into a sailor - The point of the whole thing is to break you down (not in a bad way necessarily) from your civilian self and "rebuild" into a sailor. We're not by any means robots, no, no, we're critically thinking members of a team - a well run ship is determined by how well her sailors work together.
- Your body will be pushed like never before. Our job is only getting harder, and mental and physical endurance are keys to succeeding in that job.

you better damn well believe we still perceive torpedoes as a threat. a chinese sub snuck past a carrier group's lines of defense, so yes, we still know that our ships have to defend from above, on, and below the water line. 4/18/2008 1:12:32 AM |

How many seamen can fit in the poopdeck? 4/18/2008 1:17:29 AM |
chembob Yankee Cowboy 27011 Posts user info edit post |
well, JAG is part of the staff officer corps. you wouldn't go to North Chicago with the enlisted kids. There is a variation of basic training, after which you would commission into the JAG Corps. I'm not an expert on this, you'd have to ask the folks down at the Navy Reserve center on Western
and check out this site: http://www.jag.navy.mil/careers/index.html
[Edited on April 18, 2008 at 1:27 AM. Reason : the yelling is not a huge part of military life.] 4/18/2008 1:25:57 AM |

^^and it would be how many seamen could fit ON the poopdeck.
well, depends on the ship and the sailors, but you can usually fit the whole crew on the poopdeck, which we call the fantail nowadays. 4/18/2008 1:30:26 AM |

thanks yea i am just worried about making it through the basic training. not like physically, just mentally.
oh and also this is a serious question...are there any NOT ultra conservative people in the navy? can i get some moderates up in thurrr?

With our current Navy, do you think it's possible in our lifetimes that the United States will ever suffer an amphibious assault from a hostile country? 4/18/2008 1:33:35 AM |
chembob Yankee Cowboy 27011 Posts user info edit post |
Just take everything one at a time, and focus on doing it right instead of doing it fast. Try to work with everyone as a team, i.e., check each other's uniforms, encourage one another, use each other's strengths (one guy might be really good at shining shoes, so he should teach others, etc.). And most importantly, LISTEN to the Drill Instructors.
