that's it. i won't be in the lake (which is full of bass, catfish, and white perch), i'll be in the river that surrounds the lake. it's kinda wild the way it's all laid out. my dad works at that plant. the big black thing in the picture is a pile of coal. 5/7/2008 2:01:55 AM |

Is there a good spot to fish on the banks?
My dad's coming to Rocky Mount to catch some shad (nearing the very end of their run), but if I can get him on some stripers then he'd be the happiest man around. 5/7/2008 8:37:27 AM |

standard carolina/flounder rig w/ a 2 oz egg sinker 17# test main line 30# fluro leader about 16" long i like the sea striker wide gap hooks, can't remember what size they are. gamakatsu or owner circle hooks work nice too.
pretty much this rig with a different hook. sometimes you have to up the weight.
i use 6'6" or 7' rods and abu garcia ambassadeurs. i use this same rig if i'm targeting catfish or stripers. 5/7/2008 6:04:52 PM |

probably not at all for catfish, they mainly use smell for feeding. stripers...idk, maybe. i mainly use it out of habit because it makes a big difference when fishing for trout, drum, flounder, spanish, etc. they're all fairly visual feeders, especially spanish. 5/7/2008 7:09:08 PM |

i wish they'd hit artificials here in the neuse the way they do up there. i can occasionally catch one on a soft plastic or bucktail, but the water is so much clearer in the roanoke that it's a lot more effective. catching rock on light tackle and artificials is a hell of a lot more fun than bottom fishing for them. i just don't wanna drive that damn far and fight the crowd that seems to be about 50% idiots up there. 5/7/2008 7:19:41 PM |

Hehe, I saw that and thought about getting it for a split second. Woulda made a good gift for my dad.
I went fishing with my dad on the Tar yesterday. He's a fairly experienced recreational fisherman but had never heard of shad. He caught his first shad ever and looked like the happiest man in the world. It put up a good fight and even jumped out of the water. That one was about 2-2.5 lbs. He ended up catching 5 shad, one of which he foul hooked on its back. He also caught three pretty good sized blue gills. I caught two shad and a fat bluegill.
Before my dad left, he gave me an old Shimano Ultegra 5000 It was made in 2000 and my dad says it's the Japanese version of the Stradic. He also gave me a 6.6' medium heavy Daiwa rod and a 9' Tica Tsunami med hvy graphite This was exactly what I needed for stripers and the beach

yep, it's the same as the stradic. i think they might be different colors, but they're mechanically the same. did the 2000 year model have the floating shaft? i think it might be before that. still a nice reel. a 5000 should be perfect for surf fishing. have fun with it.
wind has been keeping us from fishing this weekend, so we went to gander mountain to get somewhat of a fix. i got two 2500 saharas on 6'6" convergence rods. pops got two of last year's white 2500 stradics on 6'6" clarus rods. his were on clearance and we were all at the low price.
and they have started spooling any combo over $50 with shitty trilene XL or XT for free. sorry ass line, but free is free.

my dad works for progress energy (and i start an internship with them on the 19th), so before 9/11 we could go to the private pond or whatever that you have to go through the plant gates to get to. was electric motor only, but i caught my first bass there on a 12' aluminum v-hull. the bass used to school up and bust up schools of minnows on top. have they opened that back up to employees?
[Edited on May 11, 2008 at 11:49 AM. Reason : anyway, the main lake is an awesome bass fishing lake. they have tournaments and shit] 5/11/2008 11:48:46 AM |

Man, Gander Mtn is expensive as hell...at least their firearm/ammo/reloading section is. It's cool that you got a deal on some fishing stuff.
My dad is to fishing as I am to guns. He's got quite a few rod/reels thathe doesn't need. I opened the door to his car to get in and there were 3 Stradic 4000s, a 5000, and a large penn. Later when he pulled out the Ultegra that he was gonna give me I saw a Stradic 2000 and 8000 in his bag. I wonder what he has at home...
How do I tell if it has a floating shaft? The spool on mine will move up and down about 1/16". Is that a floating shaft or is it wore the hell out?
I'd like to find more info on this thing but can't find anything on the web. A few questions I have: -It says "SUPER SHIP" on it. Any idea what that means? -What poundage ratings do No.4, 5, and 6 line typically have? -How do I maintain this thing? What do I oil and what do I grease? How do I care for the drag system? -Anyone know where I can get spare spools for it? Are spare spools $texas?

just look up 2000 year model stradic/ultegra and see if it came with a floating shaft. i don't think it did, but it's still an awesome reel.
no clue what super ship is, but i've never dealt with the japanese models.
idk what "number 4" line is. i just buy mine by like "8 lb. test" etc. explain what this is plz.
oil goes on bearings and grease goes on gears. for oil you can buy reel oil from about anywhere or just use 3-in-1 machine oil in the black and white can, it works good. for grease you can buy the actual stuff for reels or just use wheel bearing grease, etc. you can even use vaseline.
spare spools are relatively cheap and easy to come by on ebay. not sure about a 2000 model, but ebay is always full of them, so look around there. 5/11/2008 4:53:03 PM |

I've looked up everything I can think of for the Ultegra/Stradic and cant find anything other than the newer stuff.
The spool (a 5000 size) lists line numbers and capacities in meters, not line pounds.
I think one day I'll break this reel down completely and regrease with gungrease and reoil with gun oil. It's good stuff and is easily available for me

Whats the best pier off the coast of NC to go fishing off of?
I've been to Bogue and its okay. 5/11/2008 5:18:59 PM |

bogue is full of tourists.
seaview is great, but expensive.
ocean crest is okay. really crowded now that it's the only pier on oak island.
johnny mercer's is expensive and full of tourists.
i've heard good stuff about avon.
they tore down long beach, which was my favorite.
get a boat. my dad and i can haul the boat and fish all day and it'll still be cheaper than going king fishing at seaview. 5/11/2008 5:28:49 PM |

Went to Ocean Crest this past Wednesday. Caught a ~2lb spanish on a gotcha and a few small blues. And ironically it seemed that the trout were hitting gotchas more than live shrimp. Chopper blues were in pretty thick also with a few caught in the 8-10lb range and the biggest had a nice 4" diameter bite mark where something something tried to take a chunk out of it. 40" cobia was caught from the surf just down from the pier. weather has gone all to hell now though. 5/11/2008 5:44:47 PM |

I'm gonna throw out the old line on my 5000 size Shimano. This reel will be my striper, surf, and pier rig. I've used braided lines on a couple other reels. I think I've used Ugly Braid, Stren Super Braid, and Power Pro. But, they've all been different test lines so I haven't really been able to compare them directly. I do think the Stren might cast a little better and tie better, but it's noisy through ss guides. I'll probably go with a 30 lb braid.
Have any of you used Sufix braid? If so, how does it compare to the others? I might go with a 40 lb just so I don't cut the hell out of my hand lifting fish up the pier. Would 40 lb cast noticeably worse than 30? 5/14/2008 9:10:39 AM |

When I lived in Raleigh there was a neighborhood way up off of Six Forks Rd, I cant remember the name of it. When you drive into that neighborhood, there are two ponds, one on either side of the road. We used to go up there and fish all the time and caught some pretty nice bass for a neighborhood pond. Noone ever said anything to us and we rarely saw anyone else fishing. 5/14/2008 1:53:54 PM |

se7entythree and I are gonna go fishing this weekend, possibly offshore for king mackerel, dolphin, and other junk that I'm unfmailiar with.
Her brother says he's got all we need as far as bait, but I'm still curious on what to use. Do people usually use live bait, cut bait, spoons, plugs, bucktails...? What are yalls personal favorite baits & lures (and what species do you target) for offshore fishing?

During the winter we use plastic stuff (gulp, etc..), but now that the bait fish have moved back in, its live only for us.
We usually go out and find some schools, cast net until the live well is pretty stocked with finger mullet or menhaden, and then start our fishin. 5/21/2008 6:16:00 AM |

sailfish is the other thing we'll be fishing for. matthew says we'll catch some menhaden (i think) and stuff to use as bait.
another important question: what is the best thing to take/do for sea sickness? i haven't been offshore fishing since i was 14 and i got sick the last time. we were on a bigger boat then too (a 35' egg harbor). this time we'll be in a...umm...i don't know how long or what brand but it's smaller and center console. i don't know that i'll be sick, but i want to do everything i can to prevent it. 5/21/2008 9:33:32 AM |

Well just take some pills for sickness. As far as fishing, clarkspoons on planers will get you blues and spanish. For kings and mahi, troll cigar minnows on hb rigs or pirate plugs. 5/21/2008 9:52:58 AM |
