I hear that the Canadians pay all of their athletes who win a medal (gold/silver/or bronze) $20,000 per medal...does the U.S. do the same for their athletes who win medals...or do they just leave it up for companies to sponsor them in order for them to get compensated? Just curious? B/C I know they all put in a shitload of practice/effort to get ready and train for years and stuff...so I was wondering if/how the USOC compensated our athletes for kicking ass during the Beijing games??

The USOC has paid prize money to its winning Olympians since 1984, this year giving out $25,000 to gold medal winners, $15,000 to those who take home a silver and $10,000 for a bronze. Some of the richer U.S. sport federations give additional prize money to their winners as well.

His name was Dave Velez I think. He won his heat, but only put up the 33rd fastest time so he did not make it to the semifinals. I think his event was the breast stroke.
