My biggest beef with my Speedmaster is the acryllic crystal. It really shows wear worse than glass.
I actually had it replaced because of a small crack that I picked up while working on my car. The bill for that was around $180, so I used that to justify buying a Citizen to wear whenever I'm doing work around the house or walking the dog. 11/30/2009 7:41:43 PM |

It has acrylic crystal because it was originally designed to use in space, so they were afraid of the saphire crystal shattering. Also, the scratches on acrylic can be buffed out pretty easily. Omega also make the Speedmaster Pro version with the saphire crystal. My favorite is the Speedmaster Pro with seethrough caseback, kinda like the one below.

lol, I realllly have to have a speedmaster. I like the longer service interval with coaxial escapement also. Omega just came out with the 2nd generation of coaxials, the 8500, which is supposedly an improvement from 2500 that's in planet ocean (higher price also). The 2500 is already an excellent movement. Some people on watch forums have reported quartz-like accuracy with some fine regulations.12/1/2009 11:16:04 AM |

I'd be looking at used, automatic Tag Heuer, Longines, Stowa, and if I'm lucky, Omega. It really depends on your preference for quartz or automatic, old or new. Before you buy any watch, post it on here so we can give you our opinions on it.12/1/2009 12:23:18 PM |

The Speedmaster wasn't actually designed as a space watch, it just happened to pass the tests NASA put it through when they were looking for a watch. I think it's just a design feature and that Omega opted for a bubbled crystal instead of a glass one and a thicker case.
