I regularly see deer meandering right next to the road around the Naval Observatory and in the area of the park south of Calvert. So I don't blame them. 3/30/2013 7:08:45 PM |

I work right down the street from the stadium (right where those two brick chimney stacks are to the right of the scoreboard) at the Washington Navy Yard.
While the stadium has def helped to improve the surrounding area...the afternoon games make it SUCK leaving the office...even to go to a meeting down the street.... 4/13/2013 10:48:39 PM |

I have a 1BR in a pretty nice building on Connecticut Ave at Cleveland Park.
I pay under $1400 because they tried to raise my rent by the vacancy increase, and I threatened to sue the management company. 4/22/2013 7:23:40 PM |

we're both only 2 miles from our offices which is pretty great. i hop on the bus and since i'm near the end of the route, i'm at work in about 5 minutes. definitely beats the 20 mile commute each way to and from Durham i was doing 4/22/2013 9:22:07 PM |

manasas sucks dick. AWFUL traffic, every day, for no reason. Same with woodbridge. I looked in that area because it was so cheap but if you want to go out in DC with any regularity or have a decent commute, you don't want to live there. falls church, annendale, bailey's crossroads, seven corners, and alexandria are cheaper than arlington and dc, still in metro and driving distance of dc and easy commutes to mclean 4/22/2013 10:55:14 PM |

GERMANTOWN???
Ok, move to Cleveland Park or Columbia Heights for DC, or Arlington or Alexandria for VA, if you want to have any fun and want an easy commute to work. I know I've already said this, but you seem to be ignoring it for some reason. Then you come back to the thread, type the worst cities to live, then hit post reply. I don't get it.
Germantown will give you at least an hour commute in traffic

The office is right at the Ballston metro stop. I live in Cleveland Park right now, so it's an easy metro ride. I know after a few months I'll be tempted to move, but we'll see. I know I'm going to want to drive to work often so I can go right to Top Golf after too... I don't know how much the building is going to make me pay for parking, so that will definitely affect my decision to move.4/23/2013 8:13:03 AM |

Also, how is the housing market up there? I might just bite the bullet and get a home if the mortgage would be cheaper than an apartment

Yeah, Germantown is pretty far out there. You would be stuck with a bad commute on a good dag, or an awful commute on a bad day. Not to mention there is literally nothing to do out there. Your neighbors would be old men, inviting you to play bingo.
I know its a lot of money, but you will probably be much happier living closer to DC, or at the very least within walking distance to the metro.
Housing market is insane here too. I think the median price starts around $370k, there's a depleted inventory, and the listings go so fast that you need to be prepared to put out an offer when first seeing a house. You might be able to find a condo. or foreclosure though. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/where-we-live/post/dc-home-prices-increased-more-in-the-past-year-than-they-have-since-2006/2012/05/10/gIQAnM3jFU_blog.html

You don't necessarily need a roommate. I mean, a roommate may not be a bad way to go, but you have other options. If you can do $1400 a month, you can find an apartment for that in Alexandria or Arlington without a problem, and even Cleveland Park where I live if you look long and hard (pause).
Quote : | "Also, how is the housing market up there? I might just bite the bullet and get a home if the mortgage would be cheaper than an apartment" |
From what I understand, prices didn't really go down in DC, but they did far out in the docks. If you have money for a home, I'd purchase a condo in the SW waterfront area. They are still cheap from BEFORE the recession, and they are building that area up into a downtown harbor like Baltimore's. The value will fucking skyrocket in a couple years. You can also buy a home for a decent $$ in the NE area around Catholic university, but I can't stand that side of DC. It's so boring and the only people I know who live out there are families... mostly old

DC folk--what are your favorite bar and restaurant recommendations? We'll be coming up in July for a bachelorette weekend. Re bars: the bride will prefer a place she can sit down, views and rooftops a plus, not necessarily looking for a club but not against a suggestion. Re restaurants: while a good sit down meal would be nice, tapas or appetizers will work too. We'll be staying in Foggy Bottom. 4/30/2013 8:36:22 PM |

In foggy bottom, Founding farmers is one of my favorite restaurants. You won't get the views there though. Maybe head to the Georgetown waterfront after for drinks if you want the views.
If you want rooftop, Local 16, Public bar, or 18th st. Lounge. Also good rooftop bars in Arlington but I'm not gonna send you across the river. 4/30/2013 9:53:06 PM |

Jaleo for soild tapas
there's a Circa in Foggy Bottom that has a nice outdoor patio, but there might still be a GWU crowd there.
there are actually a ton of excellent rooftops on H St, but that's out of your way.
Local 16 is probably more what you're looking for., though that "rooftop" doesn't really have a view. but it's outside drinking.
not a rooftop, but american ice co. is usually good if the weather is nice, depending on who is playing at 930 club. it tends to drive the pre-show crowd. but their patio is excellent. 5/1/2013 9:44:00 AM |

i keep forgetting you're going to be in a bachelorette party. just go nuts in adams morgan. i wouldnt go there normally, but it doesn't get more sloppy than that, and there are definitely good rooftops there.
jack rose has an excellent rooftop at the bottom of adams morgan, though they specialize in whiskey, which might not be your bachelorette party's thing. 5/1/2013 2:38:31 PM |

^^i mean...it's a bachelorette but if Adams Morgan area is gonna be a DC version of glenwood south that's not what we're looking for. The bride would hate that. I see on Yelp there's a dive bar called shenanigans though so is it a good mix of options? 5/2/2013 8:33:54 AM |

I can vouch for Matchbox pizza. And you can walk to bars in Chinatown after.
And "sloppy" is a pretty apt description of Adams Morgan. 5/2/2013 9:33:47 AM |
Agent 0 All American 5677 Posts user info edit post |
nah the DC version of Glenwood South is like all the bars right around what I like to call the "Arlington Triangle", which is basically in and around the area of Conn Ave, 18th St, and M, NW. South of Dupont. basically Lucky Bar, Sign of the Whale, Public Bar, Science Club, etc. All that bullshit.
Ad Mo is just an overall shit show. I could see Millie and Al's being a bachelorette destination. And I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice to your DC trip if you didn't pop in to Dan's Cafe late night.
I haven't gone out out in Adams Morgan in several years, but I drive through there all the time and there are visibly a ton of bars with rooftops as you progress up 18th.
I feel like what I remember about the elkaybie vibe, they should just start the night at ChurchKey and head up 14th to U. Then they could just hit up Stetson's en route to 18th and end up in Adams Morgan. That way your night starts off slightly refined, and ends up black out.
I would day-drink at the following places:
Cantina Marina American Ice Co. Biergarten Haus
All of these are fairly spread out through the city, but I think if you catch a nice sunny weekend, just Uber or cab your way around to all of them.
