We do know, hence the reason why Medicare was created.

Yes, it does have an effect on insurance companies. A positive one. They don't have to try and cover the most expensive demographic out there. The Insurance companies are content not having to worry about covering seniors.

"so, you don't think that state mandates on what insurance must cover (ie, you gotta cover more than just catastrophic stuff) would affect the role of insurance moving away from catastrophic coverage?"

Do you even know what State mandates are? The majority of state mandates are catastrophic events.

Ignoring the argument I see.

So far in the last page you threw out the terms market value, state mandate, troll, strawman, without any concept of what those terms mean. Also, I have a feeling you have no idea what catastrophic means in reference to health insurance.

I have a question.

Lets say that I was to go out and buy a PERSONAL health insurance policy like United Healthcare One or something BCBSNC offers.

Are they able to adjust my premium rate up or down based on my age/risk once I have purchased the policy? Is it like car insurance in that when you get a ticket, your premiums go up?

To me, it would make the most sense to buy catastropic insurance for life and use something like a HSA to cover the high deductible as long as the insurance companies couldn't raise the premium.

Granted, it would take a year or five to build up the HSA enough to cover, say, a $10k deductible, but once you have it, it is yours.

If I had been paying the same insurance policy for 20+ years, the insurance company has their money up front.

If they want to reform insurance, they need to put the power in the people's hands...not the government's, IMHO.

Doesn't the second amendment regard something that only exists by virtue of someone else being able to provide it? Someone has to manufacture the arms that are protected under the constitution.

Granted, people can make their own firearms, but people can also heal themselves without seeing a doctor is some cases.

It specifically says the "right of the people to keep and bear Arms", it does not grant them the right to buy arms. As such, if you cannot afford a gun or otherwise cannot find someone willing to sell you one, your right has not been violated. That said, we are a very generous society and there are charities that will provide you a gun if you live in a high crime area, have never committed a crime, and cannot afford one.
