"But my knee that I injured last season has started acting up something fierce. Anyone have recommendations of what I can do to try and help support it while I'm on the slopes? Is there anything that can actually be done other than suck it up?

Oh man, and one thing I REALLY wish ski resorts in the States had were hot springs. The place we went to this weekend has a big one. Got finished skiing and was able to shower off and soak in the hot spring for an hour before getting on the shuttle back down the mountain. Best way to end the day EVER!"

What did you do to your knee to injure it? Unless it's something serious, I imagine your pain is from scar tissue. You can help it by strengthening your legs as much as possible, so that the muscles take more of the stress off your ligaments.

As far as hot springs...there are plenty of manmade ones all over the place at ski resorts, they're called hot tubs And I don't stay anywhere without one (my knee swells up a bit after a day on the slopes).

"Yeah I might have to eventually bite the bullet and get something like that. Maybe I can go to the doctor and convince them to give me a cheaper medical one. Then at least my insurance will pay for it and not me"

Don't count on that man, unless you have some kickass insurance. My doctor recommended a sports brace for me to use for the first season after tearing my ACL and my insurance wouldn't touch it. It was well over $500...and I thought I had pretty good insurance.

If you've had a knee injury in the past, haven't done anything about it, and plan on being a serious skier for years to come you probably want to do yourself a favor and get it diagnosed and or corrected. B/c chances are it'll only get worse.

Jared, I am pretty f*cking jealous after looking at those pics. I can't wait to get up there myself...18 more days

That's what it was, almost to the dollar (when I booked 1 1/2 wks ago).

Continental had flights for $283, but they have baggage fees. Southwest has none.

I'm not sure to be honest. I think I just fell on it funny a few years ago when first learning to ski. It's the bottom of the knee that tends to hurt when it starts acting up.

lol, not the same at all :p This is where it's at:

Thankfully I don't have shitty American insurance. Usually my insurance will pay for things like braces and massages/acupuncture/etc. I just need to bite the bullet and go to one of the rehabilitation doctors near me I think.

Alta, Deer Valley, and Mad River Glen are the only three to not allow snowboarding.

Taos was the last one to extend an olive branch to boarders.

You'd think with all the money there is to be made, each one of those places would wise up. It's not the early 90s. Snowboarding has come a long way from "I'm stuck on a dangerous runaway plank of wood" to Olympic approved.

Unless things have changed since this time last year...Your board bag and boot bag combined should count as your first piece of checked luggage on AA which is ~$30 iirc. You're not supposed to have anything but the board and boots in those two bags, but I wrapped my board with snowboarding coats, pants, shirts, etc to "protect it", put my helmet in between the bindings on my snowboard, and filled my boots with boxers, socks, etc. As far as I could tell they never looked inside the bags anyway, so unless it's obviously overstuffed I don't think they'll care. Just do curbside pickup and tip the guy $5 for safe measure.

For some reason the folks at RDU understood that a board bag + boot bag counts as one piece of checked luggage, but the folks at Reno NV wanted to charge me for two checked pieces. Of course, the first piece is $30 and the second was some astronomical price ($80+). I don't believe that for shit as I'm sure Reno sees hundreds of snowboards per day, but after a little bit of arguing the lady "did me a favor" and counted it as one piece of checked luggage. I wasn't going to push my luck and try to get her to admit to being wrong, but I'm sure she was full of shit.

Free flights / checked bags for airline pilots. Too bad I'm furloughed.

DAMN ECONOMY.

Flying into SLC was pretty eye opening the first time. Sadly, it was for work and not pleasure. Still waiting to ride the greatest snow on earth.

So I've somehow been suckered into teaching a bunch of n00bs how to ski Anybody know of some good websites I could take a look at for the basics of skiing. It's been 8 years since I took the ski class at State so I'm a bit rusty at the very basics. I want to make sure I give them a good foundation before they start falling on their asses getting off the lift

Leaving for Winter Park/Steamboat at 3:30 from RDU on AA. So pumped!

I stuffed by board bag with all my riding gear and my clothes actually. The thing weighs a ton though. We'll see how much they charge me. At least the only other piece I have is a book bag as a cary on.

Southwest is running a special all winter long, $0 baggage fees on skis and boots (and snowboards as well I'm sure). I'm not sure if this is different than their current promotion of first 2 checked bags free but I think it is in addition.

I've never flown Southwest before but for my flight to Utah in 1 1/2 months I am. Just the same I'm not taking my skis with me. Too much of a hassle. I'd rather rent the newest stuff (will be taking my boots though).

3^

I've flown with my skis on US Air several times and I always put all of my ski clothes in there to protect my edges and they always just charge the same price of a normal bag. They have never asked me to unzip my bag to make sure I just have skis, you should be fine. I have even flown my set and a co-workers set in the same bag and they still didn't say anything.

Got back from Jackson Hole on Monday. It was freakin awesome. Definitely the most challenging mountain that I have ridden to date. Also, it was -20 degrees the first day, so Frostbite was a legit concern. We rode 4 days straight though, and it was crystal clear (they got 3 feet of snow the week and a half before we got there). I would definitely recommend it, and "the Mangy Moose" which is a very popular mountain bar right there in teton village.

To compare to some CO mountains, I would say that Vail felt a lot like a playground to me while this mountain was much more of an obstacle course. The tree runs were intense and it was incredibly easy to get yourself in a situation where you were fucked if you weren't careful. Luckily we had a few friends there that were locals to guide us. They opened a run for the first time all season while we were riding by, and it was the deepest powder I have ever ridden in. That mountain seriously humbled our group, who I would define as advanced, but not expert.

It also should be noted how cordial and accomodating every single mountain employee was. You could really tell how much they appreciated our business whether it was for a Tshirt or a bowl of chili. One of the best places I have ever visited. 100% recommend if you got skills.

i've been to j-hole, it's aight, you do need some skills as it's pretty steep. town is great too.

^^^keystone is great it's my go-to place since it's so close and so much better than a-basin. although i have to say i've been pretty let down so far in terms of how little snow they've gotten

got plans for breck first weekend in feb. (feb 6-9) and last weekend (feb 27-march 3)

i'll probably be at vail/bc next weekend until the slopes closer to denver get some snow, it's been like mid-50's here.

To the point that I'm checking out Snowshoe's 10-day. It's a bit warmer now so hopefully next weekend it'll get cold again. I see it's supposed to be colder and snow a bit early next week so hopefully that'll make the conditions good for us.

Can't wait to stay right in the village again for cheap!

** A lot of the West coasters I worked with think that Jackson Hole has the consistently best conditions in the country. Of course I thought the Sierra's were great and they constantly bitch about "Sierra slush" so they definitely have higher standards then your typical New England skiier...

Kirkwood is the highest elevation resort out there. Usually has the best conditions around, but it can be a bitch to get to if you stay in South Lake and the weather turns.

Honestly, Heavenly is the best IMO because of the location...

They held the Olympics there in the 60s, as well as made some cheesy ski movie called "Hot Dog" there in the 80s. I recommend watching it; its so cheesy its funny and there are a lot of boobs as well

Any recommendations for a helmet for a skier? It's time to finally start wearing a helmet. Preferably one with either built in headphones or the ability to install them.

also, i need a wheeled ski bag/carrier that can take two pairs of skis.

Kirkwood is awesome. We went there for 3 days last year, and if werent for kirkwood's height, we would have been rained on. They have SO many plows going on the road from South Lake that its fairly safe. But you definitely need AWD, chains, or 4x4. We had 4x4 and it was comfortable. Took about 45 mins to an hour to get there from South Lake every day. Snow was light most of the time, with maybe one day of moderate once we started getting close.

^^I, too, would like some info on helmets with headphones/speakers. I was talking to one of my friends about it the last time he and i went skiing and he said 'helmets are stupid, don't get one'....this was not even an hour after he fell, hit his head on the ice, and STILL had a bad headache from it.

Got about 18'' of snow while I was skiing yesterday. 25'' over a 24 hour period in the western Sierra.

The skiing was great, but not quite worth having a truck slam into me on the drive back to the Bay Area.

I'm all for helmets, but not headphones built it. I feel like it removes too much awareness. For safety's sake I'd prefer to hear everything and everyone around me. My $0.02.

I think it depends on how loud you play your music. I don't understand at all my students who have their earphones up to volume 11 at all times and then wonder why they have headaches

I listen to music going down the slopes, but I keep the volume down to basically a whisper. Enough that I know the music is there and I can keep in rhythm with it but the noises around me are much more prominent.

I like my helmet. It's a Bern Baker model. Fits perfect on my head with nothing else on, but I wish I had gone one size larger though since I usually wear a balaclava. Just something to keep in mind when trying them on.

I like the looks of it a lot and that's the main reason I chose it over the competitors. Stupid reason I'm sure, but if you're going to wear one you might as well find something that fits your style. It is very well built and offers good protection; moreso than it's plasticy looking shell might lead you to believe. If I had a do-over I might grab one with vents. They do make an audio version as well, although I don't really want tunes when I'm snowboarding.

p.s. New board showed up on my front porch today. Looks much better in person than in the pic though. The skull is chrome and the board has metalflake the full length of it. Pic doesn't do it justice.
Will be selling a Evol 160 in the next few weeks if anyone is interested.
