How good are your tires, that could be a scary ride.

I'm going to snowshoe friday morning around 9...though depending on the weather I might make the argument that we should leave around 7am.

Pat...the storm isn't supposed to get to WV until Friday afternoon. You should be fine leaving at 9.

My initial prediction for East Tennessee yesterday was 2-4" of snow. The NWS in Morristown is settling on 2-5" with it starting as snow Friday morning, switching over to a mix during the day, then back to an all snow even through Saturday. None of the local channels have ventured a guess as of the noon news today.

I'm not sure of the source, but I googled snow chain state laws and got this for NC:

Quote :
"Permissible upon any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to slide or skid."

Also, keep in mind most tire chains aren't designed for use above 25mph (not to mention they're loud as hell if you're not on snow).

Nevermind, studded tires are also allowed in NC when conditions call for it. I found it in North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 20. I.e. GS 20-122

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/Statutes/StatutesTOC.pl?Chapter=0020

You can be sure of this source. *Edit* spikes are allowed, just 1/16 of an inch tho.

Quote :
"§ 20-122. Restrictions as to tire equipment.
(a) No vehicle will be allowed to move on any public highway unless equipped with tires of rubber or other resilient material which depend upon compressed air, for support of a load, except by special permission of the Department of Transportation which may grant such special permits upon a showing of necessity. This subsection shall have no application to the movement of farm vehicles on highways.
(b) No tire on a vehicle moved on a highway shall have on its periphery any block, stud, flange, cleat or spike or any other protuberance of any material other than rubber which projects beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire, except that it shall be permissible to use farm machinery with tires having protuberances which will not injure the highway and except, also, that it shall be permissible to use tire chains of reasonable proportions upon any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to slide or skid. It shall be permissible to use upon any vehicle for increased safety, regular and snow tires with studs which project beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire not more than one sixteenth of an inch when compressed.
(c) The Department of Transportation or local authorities in their respective jurisdictions may, in their discretion, issue special permits authorizing the operation upon a highway of traction engines or tractors having movable tracks with transverse corrugation upon the periphery of such movable tracks or farm tractors or other farm machinery.
(d) It shall not be unlawful to drive farm tractors on dirt roads from farm to farm: Provided, in doing so they do not damage said dirt roads or interfere with traffic. (1937, c. 407, s. 85; 1939, c. 266; 1957, c. 65, s. 11; 1965, c. 435; 1973, c. 507, s. 5; 1977, c. 464, s. 34; 1979, c. 515.)"

How accurate is that picture Senez postedup there? According to that, Greensboro could get 8-15 inches. If that's the case, why is my local weather saying only a possibility of 1-4?

That's just a guess based on the local trend. It could very well happen, but things might change. Weathermen don't necessarily want to to freak people out now, and then have the models change. Usually in big events, they wait until the last minute to spring the big numbers on people. Right now, triangle weathermen have all been saying, "heavy snow" or "significant" but not giving actual numbers. The last thing they want is to say a foot of snow, and have it all end up being rain.

You say it as though people plan rationally for an inch.

Or, plan in the first place.

Yes.

That falls under the category "Better to have and not need, than need and not have" and "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst."

How long could you last, eating normal meals (not starving yourself or eating ramen), without going to the store (or vising a restaurant)?

Basically....how much food do you have on hand? 1 day? 3 days? 1 week? More?

Personally I'd rather have enough to know that I'm good if the unexpected winter storm happens and Raleigh falls apart.

But yes....bread and milk.....wtf?! Get some real food...

Easily 2 weeks, if not 3 or 4.
Especially since we're talking cold weather, and don't have to worry about spoilage if the power goes out.

I usually just stock up on beer

we have a whole chest freezer full of meats and other items, and 2 propane tanks for the grill should the power go out.

Here is my accumulation forecast as of now. It should be noted in VA the northern extent of the blue is only where I stopped my forecast it doesn't necessarily mean the snow stops there:

00Z NAM model just came out and it was the northerly outlier. Now it's not. NC (triangle north) is going to get BLASTED... meanwhile, I'll be up at Snowshoe and it'll be FREEEEZZZZINNNGGGG and mostly dry.

Congrats I guess. The one big storm to hit the Triangle I won't even be here for

^^ one that is most likely going to be close to correct.

I'd be surprised if you got that much snow... but it's getting more and more likely you get a base of ice and 4-5", possibly more, of powder. It's going to be a disaster in terms of driving on Saturday though. You can pretty much take to the bank at this point.

There is still a CHANCE that it shifts to the North about 100 or so miles but I certainly wouldn't bank on it. This might be the one this year for the Triangle...

Most likely you're right. But I remember back in in the late 1990's (maybe even 2000) when Greensboro was promised a dusting and got 14" in one night. I went to bed thinking maybe we'd get a delay and waking up to having trouble opening the front door.

So like I say, as a betting man I suspect we'll get much less, but I'm open to the possibility of the other extreme as well. I've already stocked up on booze and will go get some non-refrigerated food tomorrow. The firewood supply is decent, but probably not enough for a full cold day without power, assuming we want to keep it going constantly.

Incidentally, that's part of the reason I never understood the bread-and-milk thing. Milk is going to go bad pretty quickly in an unpowered fridge. Bread is also more perishable than a lot of things. Given that my family lives way out in BFE where major outages routinely last a week or more, that's a big deal. Get canned shit.

I realize this would be uncommon in Raleigh but still I like to prepare.

we've gotten an inch or more of rain several times this season...this is just the same thing although now it will finally be cold enough.

re: why Allan Huffman's predictions are higher than others - he says somewhere on his blog that he feels free to say what he is actually seeing since he's not accountable to anyone while Fishel and the government have to answer to viewers and voters.

the 06z models aren't backing off on this. I think the Triangle is looking at 9-10", though any amount of sleet infusion will cut that significantly (but essentially have the same effect on paralyzing the area).

there's also an outside chance if we do get enough snow that Tuesday's system turns to snow or ice as well - then we start looking at 2000 storm type issues where this whole place shuts down for a week or more.
